Multi criteria assessing approach of the slow-moving urban landslide hazard, the case of Moulay Yacoub town (Morocco)
Since many decades, the town of Moulay Yacoub (MY) has undergone an intensification of its urbanization to meet the demands of rental housing for the visitors of the hydrothermal springs, which is considered as the only attraction of the town. Unfortunately, the majority of the buildings, both private and public, suffer from varying levels of damages where the lithological and geomorphic field features are to blame, without omitting the anthropogenic effects. In fact, the town is built on a marly hill conducive to slope movements, ranging from shallow solifluctions to large landslides, besides the swelling/shrinkage behaviour of these marls. The paper presents a multi-source approach to investigate the activity and the interactions of slow urbanized landslides and expansive soils within the urban perimeter of Moulay Yacoub. Indeed, the desiccation cracks of marly soils reveal their expansive behaviour, also attested by the swelling values. The other geotechnical parameters obtained from laboratory tests show that the shallow marls samples are severely weathered compared to those of the compacted deep ones. The Borehole data and seismic noise survey allows the detection of several impedance contrasts corresponding to the shallow weathered-deep marls interfaces which in some cases represent the rupture surfaces of gravitational processes. The very slow but perennial activities of the later are attested by the inclinometers, the PS-InSAR monitoring and building damages. The case study provides a good opportunity to highlight the complementarity of the multi-source tasks which stand as a further contribution to fostering this kind of integrated approaches at the slope scale. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Changes in left atrial deformation in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Evaluation by vector velocity imaging
Objectives: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) represents a generalized myopathic process affecting both ventricular and atrial myocardium. We assessed the global and regional left atrial (LA) function and its relation to left ventricular (LV) mechanics and clinical status in patients with HCM using Vector Velocity Imaging (VVI). Methods: VVI of the LA and LV was acquired from apical four- and two-chamber views of 108 HCM patients (age 40±19years, 56.5% men) and 33 healthy subjects, all had normal LV systolic function. The LA subendocardium was traced to obtain atrial volumes, ejection fraction, velocities, and strain (ɛ)/strain rate (SR) measurements. Results: Left atrial reservoir (ɛsys,SRsys) and conduit (early diastolic SRe) function were significantly reduced in HCM compared to controls (P-1.8s-1 was 81% sensitive and 30% specific, SRa>-1.5s-1 was 73% sensitive and 40% specific. By multivariate analysis global LVɛsys and LV septal thickness are independent predictors for LAɛsys, while end systolic diameter is the only independent predictor for SRsys, P<.001. Conclusion: Left atrial reservoir and conduit function as measured by VVI were significantly impaired while contractile function was preserved among HCM patients. Left atrial deformation was greatly influenced by LV mechanics and correlated to severity of phenotype
Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: A Case Study in a Tunisian Young Man
The increasing prevalence of cannabis use in the world requires awareness of cannabis-related disorders such as cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. This syndrome includes cyclic episodes of nausea, vomiting, and the learned behavior of hot bathing in individuals with chronic cannabis use. We present the case of a suspected cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome that required a review of the literature to retain the diagnosis. The following case illustrates how cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome awareness may lead to the diagnosis
Cultural diversity and international law. In the field of human rights and identities
This communication was submitted to the International Conference “Cultural Diversity, Multilingualism and Ethnic Minorities in Sweden” (Ambassade de France en Suède, Institut français, Stockholm, Sweden, 2-3 september 2009).The topic deals with “Cultural diversity and international Law”. The author tries to make clear the evolution of international law in matter of cultural diversity. In other words, the question is: How has the international law come to integrate cultural rights and diversity within its corpus
The Informal Economy in Lebanon: Dangers and Benefits
This thesis investigates through situational and empirical analysis the beneficial and detrimental characteristics of the informal economy in Lebanon and its impact on the public and state interest through its socio-economic associations. The informal economy is a polymorphous entity, and in order to determine its versatile contribution, has been separated into four different variables or key drivers. The four key drivers constitute the determinant variables of the informal economy.
The main method used to explore the four determinant variables is the Force Field analysis. The first key driver is informal remittances as they represent a significant fraction of the informal economic activity in Lebanon and make a major contribution to Gross Domestic Product. The second driver is corruption, as this involves massive economic transactions on a daily basis, with an enormous impact at both the microeconomic and macroeconomic levels. The third key driver is the informal employment and commerce sector, as the unpaid VAT and corporate and income tax evasion results in a huge annual loss of government revenue in Lebanon. The fourth and last key driver is the illegal networks, as Lebanon represents an international hub for smuggling, drug and people trafficking and money-laundering, with strong links with, and implication for, its sectarian constituents. The current situation in Lebanon fuels the creation of a chaotic socio-economic environment where it is impossible to estimate accurately the significance of the informal economy, or indeed the size of the overall economy.
As far as possible in this research all the key drivers have been independently and collectively evaluated through the data collected from the primary sources (users/public opinion, government officials and academics) and secondary material in order to assess each key driver’s input to the informal economy. Subsequently the thesis provides an estimation of the beneficial and detrimental contribution of the informal economy in Lebanon, as well as the overall perceptions of each of the respondent groups. Lastly, the primary and secondary materials are collectively assessed from a single perspective to build, using an inductive approach, a theoretical model of the factors which fuel and perpetuate the informal economy in the country. The present thesis may constitute the foundation for future analysis of the informal economy in Lebanon by providing unconventional recommendations. It is an attempt to present the possibility of an alternative approach to the informal economy, by stressing its merits and advantages, while also recognising the dangers and challenges it poses for both the state and the society
recorrer, seja no processo civil, seja no processo penal. Tentar-se-á demonstrar, portanto, o convívio harmônico entre os critérios da sucumbência formal e da sucumbência material, buscando, sempre, a concessão da tutela jurisdicional àquele que apresenta o melhor direito em juízo, até porque o fim precípuo dos membros do Poder Judiciário não é – e nem pode ser – a aplicação cega da lei, mas sim a consecução da Justiça nos casos concretosThe current scientific article begins with a superficial analysis of the institutes that are somehow connected to the instruments of appeal on Brazilian legal order. After the consolidation of some fundamentals bases on the General Theory of Appeals, the author will try to demonstrate the insufficiency – and not the misconception – of the criterion attached to the formal defeat to verify the existence of appeal interest for the author and/or for the defendant. In this context, it will be proved, according to the most important specialists and on the basis of some concrete cases sentenced by homeland Courts, the emergence of a parameter attached to the material defeat to legitimize the appeal interest, not only in the civil, but also in the criminal process. The author will try to prove that the criterions linked with the formal and the material defeat have a harmonic conviviality, seeking, always, the concession of the judicial protection for those that present, for the Court, the best right, because the primary goal of the judges isn’t – and couldn’t be – the blindness application of the law, but rather the achievement of the Justice
