Translanguaging: An Enactive-Performative Approach to Language Education

    No full text
International audienceIn this chapter, we describe the concept of translanguaging (translangager) at the intersection of Francisco Varela's enaction paradigm (1999) and the performative turn in cultural studies (Fischer-Lichte, 2004; Sting, 2012). We will shed light on two processes that unfold in relation to each other: empathising and living aesthetic experiences that ‘anchor abstract knowledge in a sensitive and embodied knowledge of the world’ (Aden, 2008: 11). Linking the biological roots of language (Maturana & Varela, 1987) and the aesthetic roots of poetic languages (Lecoq, 1997), we pave the way for an enactive-performative pedagogy for languages (Aden, 2017a; Aden & Eschenauer, 2014). From here we map out language education within a framework of translangageance that we define as ‘the process of emergence of a common language that makes sense, through all forms of language’ (Eschenauer, 2017).First, we present translanguaging (translangager, Aden, 2012) within Varela’s paradigm of enaction, then we introduce the performative approach that allows us to implement an enactive pedagogy. We go on to illustrate our translanguaging model with a study led by the second author carried out in a plurilingual and pluricultural lower secondary school in the suburbs of Paris. We followed a cohort of 20 students aged 11 to 14 over a period of four years (2011-2015). We assessed the impact of theatre workshops co-led by artists and teachers and used as part of the students’ language education. This collaborative approach builds on the local ecology of languages (home, foreign and school languages) and takes into account the students’ voices and their capacity to navigate between all their languages and cultures. We show how the mechanisms of empathy (kinesthetic, emotional and cognitive), which engage all forms of language (corporal, cultural, linguistic) interwoven with aesthetic experience, form the very essence of translangageance. We will see that this pedagogical approach leads to a new configuration of human relations and social bonds

Taking as the historical framework for her study the British occupation from 1837 till 1967, the author delineates the landmarks of the appearance of the civil society in Aden. 1918, the growth of the volunteer’s movement among the British working in the social and the sanitary sectors, allowed the Adenis to familiarize themselves with a new type of structures, the modern associative structures which were centered on mutual aid and social progress. The second stage began after the First World..

This Research investigates and studies some pages from a missing dictionary, tagged with (Mujam al-Jumu`a), or (Al-Sarh al-Mumarred fi Jumu al-Mufrad), by its author Al-Hadrami (Mohammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Omar IbnYahya Al-Alawi), born in (1320=1902), and died in (1354= 1935).By contemplating the linguistic material of the dictionary and balancing it with (Al-Mujam Al-Muffassal fi Al-Jumu'a) by Emile Badi’eYaqoub, it was found that the “Al-Mujam Al-Jumu'a” surpassed its counterpart with the content breadth of the chapter that prepares for its dictionary subject, in terms of the number of pages referred to, in the index of its topics, the large quantity of its researches and its morphology issues, its linguistic origins, and the strict methodological controls that he followed in collecting his lexical material. Moreover, he exerted great efforts in investigating the potential plural words for the single words mentioned in the pages of his dictionary, whether nouns or adjectives. It can be said that this dictionary represents, from the perspective of lexical linguistics, an advanced model of vocabulary dictionaries, which were composed in the first half of the twentieth century, in which its author took a unique approach, in which none of the lexicographers preceded him. He devoted it to researching the plural singular terms used in the Arabic language

Magmatism at continental passive margins inferred from ambient-noise phase-velocity in the Gulf of Aden

Non-volcanic continental passive margins have traditionally been considered to be tectonically and magmatically inactive once continental breakup has occurred and seafloor spreading has commenced. We use ambient-noise tomography to constrain Rayleigh-wave phase-velocity maps beneath the eastern Gulf of Aden (eastern Yemen and southern Oman). In the crust, we image low velocities beneath the Jiza-Qamar (Yemen) and Ashawq-Salalah (Oman) basins, likely caused by the presence of partial melt associated with magmatic plumbing systems beneath the rifted margin. Our results provide strong evidence that magma intrusion persists after breakup, modifying the composition and thermal structure of the continental margin. The coincidence between zones of crustal intrusion and steep gradients in lithospheric thinning, as well as with transform faults, suggests that magmatism post breakup may be driven by small-scale convection and enhanced by edge-driven flow at the juxtaposition of lithosphere of varying thickness and thermal age

The biography novel is a modern narrative writing genre, combining between two well-known narrative artists characteristics, the biography and the novel. The novel of “Hymn of Persia” (ternimet Faris) by Awad Al-Alqami is belongs to this type of writing, in which the author recounts the events that he and his family and region have experienced since the rule of the Sultanates in the 1950s till 2018s the time of writing this novel, which divided it by the Author into four tales’ structure whose narrative threads were consistent and coherent. It is: Cactus's born tale, Displaced people tale, manhood prematurely tale, and an expected return story. We have reviewed it critically, in terms of formal elements such as title, author's name and supplementary text, as well as the structure of the main and secondary characters, spatial and temporal structure. In our study, we took this descriptive and analytical curriculum. Then we concluded to these results

Creating small opportunities with big impact in Indiana: Microfinance and small business incubator project in Fort Wayne

Several federally sponsored programs created specifically to help small business owners and entrepreneurs exist, but are not accessible to those that have poor or no credit. Small business workshops are offered throughout the community, but have no financial means to help once they have armed their clients with the proper tools to open and run a business. This study was conducted to examine the effects of the implementation of a microlending program on low-income Small Business owners, and entrepreneurs in Fort Wayne, Indiana. CANI launched a microlending program in 2010 to address the shortage of financial capital available to existing and startup low-income small businesses. Through the observation of the design, survey questionnaires, number of loans made, small business development training workshops, and presentation to stakeholders, a number of key findings were identified. As a result, the information provided in this thesis will present those findings and other key information about the project and community. (Author Abstract)Early-Aden, S.E. (2012). Somali Current rings in the eastern Gulf of Aden

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 111 (2006): C09039, doi:10.1029/2005JC003338.New satellite-based observations reveal that westward translating anticyclonic rings are generated as a portion of the Somali Current accelerates northward through the Socotra Passage near the mouth of the Gulf of Aden. Rings thus formed exhibit azimuthal geostrophic velocities exceeding 50 cm/s, are comparable in overall diameter to the width of the Gulf of Aden (250 km), and translate westward into the gulf at 5–8 cm/s. Ring generation is most notable in satellite ocean color imagery in November immediately following the transition between southwest (boreal summer) and northeast (winter) monsoon regimes. The observed rings contain anomalous fluid within their core which reflects their origin in the equator-crossing Somali Current system. Estimates of Socotra Passage flow variability derived from satellite altimetry provide evidence for a similar ring generation process in May following the winter-to-summer monsoon transition. Cyclonic recirculation eddies are observed to spin up on the eastern flank of newly formed rings with the resulting vortex pair translating westward together. Recent shipboard and Lagrangian observations indicate that vortices of both sign have substantial vertical extent and may dominate the lateral circulation at all depths in the eastern Gulf of Aden. This investigation is a component of the Red Sea Outflow Experiment (REDSOX) sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation through grants OCE 98-18464 and OCE 04-24647 to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and OCE 98-19506 and OCE 03-51116 to the University of Miami

This research explores the topic of the differentiation among the prophets and messengers. The study focuses specifically on the doctrinal hadiths found in the book “Jami’ al-Fawa’id min Jami’ al-Usul wa Majma’ al-Zawa’id”, a compilation by the renowned hadith scholar Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Maghribi (d. 1094 AH). In this work, the author draws from fifteen of the most significant sources of hadith, compiling over ten thousand narrations organized thematically. These hadiths cover a wide range of religious matters, including various issues of Islamic creed. This particular research gathers and analyzes the hadiths related to the topic of the differentiation of prophets and messengers. The study organizes these narrations, offering a general theological examination under the title: “The Doctrinal Hadiths on the Differentiation of Prophets and Messengers in the Book: Jami’ al-Fawa’id min Jami’ al-Usul wa Majma’ al-Zawa’id”. The structure of the research includes: Introduction: which outlines the significance of the topic, the reasons for choosing it, previous studies on the subject, the research methodology, and an overview of the structure. Chapter One: defines prophethood and messengership and clarifies the differences between them. Chapter Two: presents the hadiths related to the differentiation of prophets and messengers. Conclusion: summarizes the key findings and offers recommendations. The study ends with a bibliography of the sources and references used

Three hundred eighty thousand year long stable isotope and faunal records from the Red Sea : influence of global sea level change on hydrography

    No full text
Stable isotope and faunal records from the central Red Sea show high-amplitude oscillations for the past 380,000 years. Positive δ18O anomalies indicate periods of significant salt buildup during periods of lowered sea level when water mass exchange with the Arabian Sea was reduced due to a reduced geometry of the Bab el Mandeb Strait. Salinities as high as 53‰ and 55‰ are inferred from pteropod and benthic foraminifera δ18O, respectively, for the last glacial maximum. During this period all planktonic foraminifera vanished from this part of the Red Sea. Environmental conditions improved rapidly after 13 ka as salinities decreased due to rising sea level. The foraminiferal fauna started to reappear and was fully reestablished between 9 ka and 8 ka. Spectral analysis of the planktonic δ18O record documents highest variance in the orbital eccentricity, obliquity, and precession bands, indicating a dominant influence of climatically - driven sea level change on environmental conditions in the Red Sea. Variance in the precession band is enhanced compared to the global mean marine climate record (SPECMAP), suggesting an additional influence of the Indian monsoon system on Red Sea climates

Exploring the role of peace education in schools in post-conflict Somalia

This qualitative study investigates the role of peace education in schools in post-conflict Somalia. This research study followed a design with data collected from multiple sources on education in post-conflict Somalia as related to peace education. In order to reveal the emic perspective of Somali educators regarding the phenomenon under investigation, the researcher conducted face-to-face interviews with three Ministry of Education officials, three principals and three teachers guided by Patton’s interview protocol. In addition to that, the researcher composed field notes, and conducted non-participant observation. The analysis of the data yielded 34 core concepts and 3 analytic categories. The personal quotes highlight the experiences of the research participants. Three core themes arose from the interviews after transcribing and coding: Curriculum, Radicalization, and Capacity Building. The structured interviews revealed the emic perspective of the Somali educators on peace education and to what extent peace is promoted in schools in post-conflict Somalia. The findings provide a platform for future research on the topic of peace education in both Somali schools and schools in post-conflict societies. One of the limitations of this study is the setting, as it was conducted only in schools in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia. The researcher could not travel to the other regions of Somalia due to the continuing civil war in Somalia. This limits the study’s validity and generalizability to other groups, populations, and other post conflict societies. (Author abstract)Aden, S.A. (2017).
