No full textI denne oppgaven studeres forholdet mellom velgeres holdninger til innvandring og deres politiske tillit i 27 europeiske demokratier. Problemstillingen lyder som følger: «I hvilken grad og på hvilken måte er det en sammenheng mellom kritiske holdninger til innvandring og lav politisk tillit blant velgere i Europa?» Bakgrunnen for problemstillingen er todelt. På den ene siden er innvandringskritiske holdninger blitt et dominerende trekk i den offentlige opinionen. På den andre siden er den politiske tilliten til mange velgere kommet under press. I den forbindelse er det etterlyst studier av koblingen mellom disse to fenomenene. Problemstillingen besvares ved hjelp av data på både individ- og landnivå, og individnivådataene er hentet fra European Values Study (2008). Dataene blir analysert ved hjelp av multivariat flernivåanalyse. Oppgaven benytter et teoretisk rammeverk basert på arbeidene til David Easton som skiller mellom tillit til ulike nivåer av et politisk system. Hovedfunnet er at kritiske holdninger til innvandring ikke bare bidrar til lav tillit til politiske institusjoner, men også lav tillit til det politiske systemet som helhet i store deler av Vest-Europa
Downbound spiral? Economic grievances, perceived social protection and political distrust
Get PDFMomentous events in Western democracies have brought renewed attention to how various aspects of government-controlled policy outputs and outcomes affect citizens’ trust in politics. Unlike most previous research, this study uses individual-level panel data to test the link between government performance evaluations and political trust. Moreover, it gauges performance in more policy areas than previous research, including key aspects of government-controlled social services as well as a wide range of economic risks. The study finds that evaluations of government performance affect political trust but that the evidence is stronger for evaluations of social protection than for economic risks. Crucially, the analysis suggests that the relationship between performance evaluations and distrust is reciprocal. The relationship may be described as a ‘downbound spiral’ where dissatisfied groups develop distrust, which in turn makes for a more pessimistic interpretation of economic risks and welfare state performance
Election Campaigns, News Consumption Gaps, and Social Media: Equalizing Political News Use When It Matters?
Get PDFWe investigate how inequalities in political media use develop throughout election campaigns, and in particular whether social media use helps counterbalance traditional news consumption gaps. Using a four-wave individual-level panel survey of the Norwegian 2017 national election campaign, we run a series of latent growth models to investigate whether differences in news consumption based on gender, age, education, and political interest increase or decrease during campaigns. We find that news consumption gaps are either stable or converge throughout the campaign. Importantly, social media provides political information to those groups that use traditional media channels the least and thereby reduce overall gaps in political media consumption. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
