Architectural Frame as a Mirror of Communities. Some Reflections on the Architectural Norms in the Italian Observant Congregations . Haude Morvan
Talk to be presented at Weingarten, November 29 2018 The architectural norms enacted by regular orders are not only indicative of the way the orders "represent themselves in architecture" (cf. Dominique Donadieu-Rigaut, "Penser en images les ordres religieux), but also of their administrative framework (their level of centralisation in particular) and of their relationship with the laity. They might help us answer the following questions: What was the laity’s place in the monastic space ? T..

An irreducible plural: Franciscan observances in Europe (15th century)
The paper argues that within the Franciscan Order, the question of regular Observance raised specific problems which are unknown in the other religious orders. It highlights the place of Observance within Franciscan history (and the issue of 'fidelity' to Francis and to the Rule) and discusses the various Franciscan reactions to the demand of a strictior observantia of the Rule (beyond the traditional regularis observantia). The paper underscores the main trends of historiography on the Observance, from chronicles and literature of the fifteenth century to the ecclesiastical erudition of the Early Modern Age, up to the most recent historiography. The author suggests that, above all when considering Franciscan Observance at a European scale, it is appropriate to speak in plural of Franciscan observances. Considering a wide variety of sources (both documentary and literary), the author reflects on the very meaning of 'observance' in the context of Franciscan history. She then defines the characteristics of Observant spirituality, with a clear distinction between the Italici patres (and the Cismontanian area entrusted to them) and the other European contexts, mainly beyond the Alps.
International audienceThis paper is dedicated to the little studied tomb of cardinal Hugues Aycelin, still located in the former Dominican church in Clermont. First, the author suggests a restitution of its original state based on early modern sources not taken into account by former studies. The sumptuousness of materials, the complexity of the iconographical programme (especially the depiction of funerary rituals) and the heraldic programme as well are unusual for the tomb of a prelate. They remind instead of tombs of lay princes of the Capetian sphere, while anticipating some monuments of the Avignon court. The tomb can be dated between 1307 and 1311 by several iconographical elements, and the patron can be identify as the cardinal’s brother, the archbishop Gilles Aycelin. The tomb he imagined for his brother was, first of all, a commemorative monument symbolizing the dazzling rise of their family
