    Physical oceanography at the PerenniAL Acoustic Observatory in the Antarctic Ocean (Boebel et al. 2006). In the 2005/06 Antarctic field season, a Sea-Bird SBE37SM-RS232 conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) recorder was deployed through a hot-water-drill hole approximately 1-3 km from the ice shelf front. The sensor was placed about midway in the water column below the ice shelf, with a cabled connection for data transfer and power supply to the surface. This dataset is an updated version of Kindermann (2011, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.770298), containing the complete timeseries throughout the entire lifetime of the observatory before it was lost through calving of the ice front

    Modeling Ice-shelf Ocean Interaction at Petermann Glacier, Greenland

    Petermann Glacier drains about 4% of the Greenland ice sheet area, with at least 80% of its mass loss through basal melting of the floating ice shelf. Utilizing a high-resolution coupled ice-shelf-ocean model, we aim at understanding the ocean circulation in Nares Strait and the mechanism of oceanic heat supply below the ice shelf as well as quantifying the basal mass loss. The numerical model is based on the Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM), taking advantage of its flexible spatial resolution that can follow the topography. A regional model domain has been set up, which spans the greater Nares Strait region and covers Petermann Fjord with 200-m horizontal resolution and includes the Petermann Glacier geometry. As a first step, we focus on the role of tides for transporting ocean water into the ice-shelf cavity. Tidal simulations are validated with available observations, demonstrating the capability of FVCOM in reproducing the tidal current pattern in Nares Strait. Lagrangian particle trajectories are computed to explore the water exchange in Petermann Fjord. It is found that tidal oscillations in Nares Strait lead to a residual circulation in the fjord and inside the ice-shelf cavity. These results suggest that tidal dynamics plays an important role in modulating regional circulation in Petermann Fjord and heat transport to Petermann Ice Shelf

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Ice Shelf - Ocean Interaction in the Eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica

    This thesis investigates the interaction of the Antarctic ice shelves along the coast of Dronning Maud Land with the ocean circulation in the Eastern Weddell Sea. A set of direct oceanic observations below the Fimbul Ice Shelf, which were acquired during three Antarctic field seasons in the austral summers 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12, is a central element of the presented work. This new oceanographic dataset is complemented by a high-resolution state-of-the-art ice shelf - ocean circulation model. The results provide an estimate of the amount of basal melting at the Fimbul Ice Shelf, and revise the physical processes that determine the ocean heat fluxes over the East Antarctic continental slope. A major finding is that deep-ocean heat fluxes towards the ice are much more constrained than predicted by previous ocean models, causing substantially lower rates of basal melting than earlier suggested. The predicted basal melting is consistent with mass balance estimates from satellite data and implicates that the Fimbul Ice Shelf is currently not subject to rapid basal mass loss. Furthermore, the complex interplay of the processes within the coastal, frontal system, and their respective role in transporting heat for melting towards the ice is examined. The results emphasize the importance of oceanic eddies within the coastal circulation for controlling the inflow of Warm Deep Water into the ice shelf cavities. A realistic representation of the effect of the mesoscale eddy overturning is thus a crucial requirement in order to simulate basal melting along the Weddell Sea coast in the present and future climate. The results also imply that fresh, and solar-heated Antarctic Surface Water plays a central role for the ice shelf cavity exchange. Being produced by sea ice melting at the ocean surface, this water mass directly enters the cavity and increases the melting of shallow ice. Due to its buoyancy, the presence of Antarctic Surface Water also alters the coastal dynamics and regulates the inflow of warm water at depth, thus showing that a more detailed understanding of the role of this water mass for basal melting around Antarctica will need further attention. Finally, the results suggest a direct relationship between the simulated basal melting and only a few deterministic parameters of the coastal circulation, which is used to derive a simple parameterization of for basal melting at the Fimbul Ice Shelf

    Antarctic Thermocline Dynamics along a Narrow Shelf with Easterly Winds

    Determining the role of Southern Ocean warm intermediate water for driving melting of the Antarctic ice sheet is a major challenge in assessing future sea level rise. Analysis of 2859 CTD profiles obtained between 1977 and 2016 by ships and instrumented seals at the Weddell Sea continental slope reveals a seasonal rise of the Antarctic Slope Front thermocline by more than 100 m during the summer. The signal at Kapp Norvegia (17°W) corresponds with a seasonal warming downstream at the Filchner Trough (40°W), indicating that a coherent evolution of the slope front along the shelf break regulates the onshore flow of warm deep water. Climatological cross sections of the slope front hydrography show that downwelling of Antarctic Surface Water forms a secondary front above the warm deep water interface during summer. Enhanced baroclinic growth rates at this front suggest that the wind-driven suppression of the thermocline is partially compensated by a shallower eddy overturning cell when surface water is present. A simple model of the Weddell Gyre boundary current reveals that wintertime densification of surface waters is crucial for maintaining the deep thermocline along the eastern Weddell Sea coast. The sensitivity of the warm inflow to the cross-frontal density gradient implies a positive feedback with ice shelf melting that may lead to an abrupt transition into a high melting state once warm water rises over the shelf break depth. Despite its regional focus, this study highlights the role of upper ocean buoyancy fluxes for controlling the thermocline depth along seasonally ice-covered narrow shelf regions with cyclonic along-slope winds

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
