Hand Printing Practices with a Sustainable Fashion Approach
The textile world which has awakened with the consciousness of the new generation of consumers, has now begun to adapt, produce, and design for a better world and environment. Although it is not easy to reverse the damage that has occurred so far, even raising public awareness about what we can do for the future of environmental problems is a significant step. As human beings, we started to return to our essence to return to nature. When we approach this situation with a designer perspective, protecting our cultural values, keeping our traditional arts and crafts alive, re-applying them, updating them according to the requirements and needs of the new era, and bringing them to the future, are among the improvements we can make in this direction. Two projects shaped in line with the “Slow Fashion” discourse were demonstrated with methods and outcomes. It is revealed from an experimental point of view that hand printing arts can be methods and applications for sustainable fashion field. It is also underlined that there is a possibility that enables the revival and reevaluation of hand-printing arts and methods in a way that will meet the needs of sustainable design areas. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024
Algae Species Developed in and around Kakik Cave
This study is conducted on the algae samples collected in and around The Kaklık Cave that is on the road connecting Denizli to Çivril, in April 2011. The Kaklık Cave formed as the result of dissolution of carbonate and sulphate rocks by underground waters and it has a similar travertine structure like Pamukkale (Hierapolis) Travertines. The features of the part of the cave that were examined are below; Size of the circular area in the cave complex is 13 m by 11 m. The depression with a depth of 8-10 meters is the only part of the cave opening to the earth surface. A fascinating habitat has formed as the result of combination of the ecology of the cave and the daylight. Meantime there are thermal water springs close to the cave. Another important feature of the cave is that it has travertine. The subject of this study is to examine the algae species in this ecological environment. Water parameters of temperature, ph, EC and oxygen were measured during the field surveys. After that, using different methods, algae samples were collected in the stations determined in the cave. As the result of those studies, the species below were identified; Amphora sp, Cymbella sp., Epithemia sp., Gomphonema sp., Navicula sp., Pinnularia sp., Synedra sp., Chroococcus sp., Cyanobacterium sp, Oscillatoria sp. and also the members of Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta and epiphytic diatoms were recorded. The variations and densities between the species identified were determined by the areas that gets daylight or not. Due to thermal waters in the cave, excessive output of carbon-dioxide and hydrogen-sulphur and inadequacy of oxygen were determined. This situation threatens the human health. For this reason MTA (General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration) opened only a small part of the cave for visitors
Observation of Biodiversity in Touristic Caves (Mencilis Cave - Karabuk)
Because of their low light, high humidity and low temperature conditions cave ecosystems differ from those we are accustomed to see on the surface. Since they are very sensitive and fragile even the smallest outside effects can cause irreversible damages, thus caves selected for tourism are under grave danger. Among these negative affects damages caused by improper artificial lighting are most visible. Light sources used in artificial lighting cause unnatural moss growth in their surroundings. Observations made at Mencilis cave clearly portray this situation. This study will analyze the negative effects of artificial lighting on Mencilis Cave, underlying reasons of these effects and feasible preventative measures that can be taken
