Restricting consumer credit access: household survey evidence on effects around the Oregon rate cap
Many policymakers and some behavioral models hold that restricting access to expensive credit helps consumers by preventing overborrowing. The author examines some short-run effects of restricting access, using household panel survey data on payday loan users collected around the imposition of binding restrictions on payday loan terms in Oregon. The results suggest that borrowing fell in Oregon relative to Washington, with former payday loan users shifting partially into plausibly inferior substitutes. Additional evidence suggests that restricting access caused deterioration in the overall financial condition of the Oregon households. The results suggest that restricting access to expensive credit harms consumers on average.Consumer credit
International audienceThis article examines the zoological discourse that, in Chevillard’s novel, is devoted to the hedgehog, and the way in which, through it, the author stages a face-off between the hero-narrator and the animal in the form of a drama performed behind closed doors, which represents the failure of the character’s autobiographical writing project and his transformation into a zoologist in spite of himself. Creating ironic tension between the autobiographical and zoological allows Chevillard to illustrate the complexity of the relationship between author and character.
Re-inventing Harmony in Electroacoustic Music: A commentary on my Recent Music
Re-inventing Harmony in Electroacoustic Music reflects on research regarding structuring pitch-based material in my music written between 1999 and 2010. The selected works illustrates the process leading up to my research based on psychoacoustic consonance and dissonance and my strategies to create a new kind of harmony – a harmony based on concrete sounds with inharmonic spectra.
The discussion will refer to pieces by composers who have worked with harmony based on the analysis of sound spectra; instrumental and mixed works by spectralist composers such as Grisey, Murail and Saariaho and electroacoustic works by Harvey and others.
I will address the importance of research in the psychoacoustic field, in particular, research by
William A. Sethares regarding inharmonic spectra and scales and how it has affected my works

International audienceManuel de Lima (1915–1976), violinist, painter and music critic, began his writing career in 1944 with the long short-story Um homem de barbas [A man with a beard]. It was the middle of the Second World War and the Salazar dictatorship was well established in officially neutral Portugal. A few years before the belated emergence of Portuguese surrealism, to which he was linked, and in the midst of the development of neorealism, a protest movement followed mainly by the young writers of the time,Manuel de Lima asserted himself from the outset as a very singular writer. Um homem de barbas is a narrative of a love triangle that ends with the spectacular disappearance of the three protagonists. In this first work placed under the sign of the absurd, which mixes satire, marvelous, and burlesque and in which, according to Almada Negreiros' 1944 preface, the author uses realism to "undo realism", we will study the place and role of humor, as well as the various devices used.
Denial of the identity and destruction of others in the novels Scopio City (1998), Relato de un asesino (2002) and Satanás (2002) by Mario Mendoza (Colombia,1964)
The starting point of this research is the question: how does the denial of the identity of criminal characters become a process of discursive construction that leads to the destruction of others as representations of the rejected self in the novels Scorpio City (1998), Relato de un Asesino (2001) and Satanás (2002) by Colombian author Mario Mendoza Zambrano? Located in a semiotic-discursive theoretical and methodological perspective, the exploration has two central hypotheses: the first one, that identity is a discursive sign constructed in social interaction, and the second one, its denial leads to the breakage of the principle of discourse regulation and actions of criminal violence. Resulting from the interpretative-generative study carried out in the thesis, the conclusion was that in the trilogy of novels and in the characters studied the discursive construction of identities and the denial of that sense of themselves establishes violence as a way of life that generates criminal narrative programs. Violent actions are guided by a repetitive narrative schema in the cultural milieu enunciated in the stories. This process is organised and enunciated in the following way: a discursive construction of identities; an encounter with a self-oneself and others who repudiate and deny themselves; dysphoric awakening, disposition, and passionate inclination; senselessness and absence of meaning such as a crisis, disappearance of the language and discursive identity; violence and death of the self as well as the other and others
Le transport par voie navigable. L'exemple du site de Tendu (Indre)
During a rescue excavation at Tendu (Indre) in 1994, a canal has been discovered. It was dug during the 1st century AD to link a quarry to a near river. This discovery testifies that a waterway was chosen for stone transport. From its dimensions, we can deduce those of the boats being used. This canal is the first attested from archaeological investigations, at least in Gaul. For the author, this innovation gives indication of a scientific quest still not competed more than an actual scarcity of this kind of hydrographic amenagement. Pichon Michel. A discrete continuity
'A discrete continuity: On the relation between research and art practice' was published by The Journal of Research Practice, a peer-reviewed journal at Athabasca University Press. This article reflects on the nature of research and art practice, which makes a case for the necessary intermingling of these activities. Research is seen as an operating structure for the process and production of, among other things, art; it is regarded as integral to the processes of thinking and making, as are curiosity, creative enquiry and critical reflection. O’Riley asserts that these processes are not necessarily discipline-specific – although particular disciplines have specific procedures and goals – and it is argued that provisionality is central to what art can offer other disciplines; it can make a virtue of incompleteness. Discussing Flusser, Deutsch and Varto among others, the article posits an expanded notion of the artwork that is essentially conditional and reliant on spectatorial involvement
