Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Att angöra en lobby : En kvalitativ studie av riksdagsledamöters erfarenheter och attityder gentemot lobbying ur ett kommunikationsperspektiv
Title: Lobbying in the Swedish parliament - a qualitative study about experiences and attitudes of lobbying among the members of the Swedish parliament, from a communication perspective. Author: Bodil Hassel and Kristofer Persson Tutor: Emma Svensson Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to study lobbying towards members of the Swedish parliament. We aim to study their point of view: what experiences and attitudes they have towards the phenomenon. Key questions to be answered are: What experiences and attitudes do the members of the Swedish parliamentary Committee on Environment and Agriculture have towards lobbying? What skills does a successful lobbyist possess, according to the members of the committee? How do the organizations Skogsindustrierna and Naturskyddsföreningen lobby? Method/Material: The material used in this study consists of interviews with nine respondents of the Committee on Environment and Agriculture in the Swedish parliament. Additionally, two informant interviews with the organizations Skogsindustrierna and Naturskyddsföreningen were made. The questions for the interviews were based on a theoretical framework based on policies of lobbying. Main results: The main results demonstrate that all members of the Committee on Environment and Agriculture have a positive attitude towards lobbying. The results further show that a professional lobbyist of choice by the members of parliament is a three-stage rocket consisting of 1) proper preparation, 2) the right way to make contact, and 3) maintenance of the relation. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Perceptions of the milk industry
The role of our consumption in reducing environmental problems is increasingly lifted, not the least
our choice in food. Recently, the searchlight has been turned to the milk industry with an increased
medial debate as a result. This thesis explores the consumer perception of the environmental
sustainability of the Swedish milk industry and the perception of the debate thereof. Possible
explanations to how the perception of the milk industry emerges are also explored. The investigation
is conducted trough 13 individual interviews. Two groups are examined: 1) consumers and 2)
researchers on life cycle analysis and environmental experts from the milk industry. The analysis
consists of two steps. Firstly, interpretative repertoires are detected. Secondly, a theoretical
framework built around social learning and “the new media” is used. The result of the study suggests
that within the consumer group, the environmental perception of the milk industry differs and is
multifaceted. The most salient repertoires amongst the consumers are 1) Swedish industry as
essentially different, 2) ambivalence regarding its environmental impact. The perception of the
“experts” is divided. In the emergence of the consumer perception, social learning and media are
important. The consumers’ and the experts’ perception of the debate differs. While the consumers do
not see this debate as salient or central, the opposite is expressed amongst the researchers and experts.
Both groups perceive the debate as emotional and polarized
The medial image of lobbying in Sweden and possible explanations
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to study the medial portrayalof lobbying. Myaimis to study the medial image of lobbying visualized in Swedish daily and evening press and investigate possible explanations. Following key questions will be answered: 1) How is the medial image of lobbying visualized inSwedish daily and evening press? 2) What explanationscan this have? Method/Material: The material used in this study consists of a content analysis of articles from Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter, together with interviews with five journalists and five PR consultants. The questions for the interviews were based on a theoretical framework made into four hypotheses: 1) the media image of lobbying is negative, 2a) the reason to this portrayal is media logic, 2b) the reason is the ideological preferences of the journalist community, 2c) the reason is a divergence between the PR community and the journalist community. Main results: The main results demonstrate that the medial portrayal of lobbying is in a negative tone, why hypothesis 1 could be verified. The results further show that the reason for the portrayal may be media logic, as in hypothesis 2a, and a divergence between the PR and journalist communities, as in hypothesis 2c. Those two hypotheses could therefore partly be verified. I did not find as much evidence for hypothesis 2b, why it could not be verified. The reason to this may be that is was harder to study with the chosenmethod. Hypoteserna smälter dock delvis samman och metodologiska aspekter bör vägas in i resultatet
