L’architettura della moschea. Un’intervista con Salma Samar Damluji

    No full text
The subject of mosque architecture is treated in this article through an interview held by Viola Bertini with Salma Samar Damluji. The article investigates the relationship of Damluji to mosque architecture from a personal perspective, as a landmark within the town and cityscape. The relationship of contemporary mosques and the movement of modern architecture in Baghdad, the city where the interviewee lived is associate with the historic influences, architecture, and crafts of original distinguished mosques like Samarra in Iraq. Bertini further probes into Damluji’s spectrum and development during her studies at the AA in London, with research delving into Islamic art, geometry, and calligraphy, through associations and junctures that consolidated her line of inquiry and inspiration towards "another" architecture. The specificity of the design is then analysed through Hassan Fathy’s Mosque Architecture Manual, which they jointly worked on in 1975–76. Throughout the discussion, the meaning and synchroneity of the mosque structure, physicality, and aesthetics in the Arab city, as well as Islamic discipline and knowledge, are revealed and enforced. Modern projects in the Islamic world are discussed, and examples are cited. This paper elaborates on the Shaykh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, which Damluji was responsible for, with the participation of a wide range of renowned artists, architects, craftsmen, and designers. In the related stories, the language and essence of creative design qualities are validated. An approach to understanding mosque architecture through a much-needed critical analysis that reads into the historic past and contemporary present

Tapping Economies of Scale and Scope in Consumer Cooperation - A Case Analysis of Possible Cooperation among selected Cooperatives

    No full text
Because of its narrow and negative perspective of safeguarding the interests of only poor consumers against unethical practices of the private traders, consumer cooperation in India seems to have failed, except probably in some isolated pockets. A number of social welfare functions like poverty alleviation and public distribution of essential items of consumption have been imposed on them at the cost of their basic economics. With the basic micro and macro-economic rationale for consumer cooperatives as a positive form of economic organization being lost sight of, they seem to be facing enormous problems both historically as well as currently in a era of economic liberalization. Their worries seem to have been compounded with the threat of impending competition from large private enterpriss - both domestic and foreign, which highlights the need for evolving strategies to rectivy their systemic weaknesses and tackling the competition head on. This case has attempted to document just such an initiative through a round table conference with several doyens of the consumer cooperative movement in India such as Warana Bazar and Amalsad Mandali as well as some fledging consumer cooperatives from West Bengal which are already in existence for some time or contemplating entry into this field. The roundtable conference organized in the spirit of Cooperation among Cooperatives attempted to evolve strategies to capture economies of scale and scope in order to take on the competition, as well as to facilitate dissemination of ideas and information across the country.

Those of us who admire the work of Hassan Fathy are familiar with some of his ideas mainly through his own published works and may have gotten a broader sense of the extent and quality of his design activities through James Steele’s An Architecture for People: The Complete Works of Hassan Fathy (Whitney Library of Design, 1997). Nevertheless, the picture was still incomplete. Fortunately, Salma Samar Damluji and Viola Bertini have come together to fill this glaring gap with their new monograph book on Hassan Fathy and his work: Hassan Fathy: Earth and Utopia, published by Laurence King in 2018. Abstract: This article analyzesthe Islamic political thought of Ahmad Hasan within the political perspective of Indonesia Islam. According to Hassan’s point of view, Islam is a complete religion which regulates all aspects of human life ranging from spiritual to politics. For the sake of establishing an Islamic state in accordance with the will of God, Muslims should carry out all of the Islamic teachings in every situation of life. Laws and regulations in accordance with al-Qur’an should be implemented. Islam, for him, is another option of a national ideology that considers no place for religion. He wants Islam to regulate all aspects of human life, based on the belief that Islam is the absolute truth. Islam is seen as something of the highest and widest beyond national boundaries and lines. Thus, Hassan is considered a fundamentalist thinker. In the struggle for the enforcement of Islamic Shari’ah, he wants to transform the Islamic community to its original root. He firmly believed that Muslims in Indonesia are infected by spiritual disease which ought to be cured with a radical revolutionary way. Thus, he suggested, that at personal level, a Muslim should apply the Islamic law in every place and every time. Keywords: Ahmad Hassan’s thought, concept of political Islam, Islamic political development in Indonesia Abstrak: Artikel ini mempresentasikan tentang pemikiran politik Islam menurut Ahmad Hasan dalam perspektif politik Islam Indonesia.
