    The Acquisition of Comprehension Skills among High and Low Achievers of Year 4 to 6 Students in Primary School

    AbstractComprehension skill is one of the main skills which need to be acquired by primary school students. In the primary school, most of the Years 4 to 6 students is expected to achieve the necessary level of reading fluency based on the prescribed syllabus. Research finding on Year 5 students indicated that they were able to read fluently but could not comprehend what was being read (Nor Hashimah Hashim, 2000). In another study which observed the primary school teachers teaching reading comprehension showed that teachers did not stress on the acquisition of basic comprehension skills (Nor Hashimah Hashim, 2001). Thus, the objective of the present study is to identify the acquisition of comprehension skills of Year 4 to 6 primary school students. Altogether, 4101 students were involved in a comprehension test which consist of 50 multiple choice questions. These items were categorized into three main comprehension categories, namely literal, inferential and critical-creative. Twenty items were developed for literal category, 20 items for inferential category and ten items for critical-creative category which measured six, five and four comprehension skills respectively.     Biological and phytochemical studies of five Malaysian Uncaria species / Hashimah Mohd Hashim

    In this study, five species of Uncaria (family Rubiaceae) also known as “Gambir” widely used as traditional medicine in Malaysia were evaluated for their biological activities as well as phytochemical and total phenolic contents. They are U. calophylla, U. acida, U. lucida, U. cordata and U. longiflora var pteropoda. The methanolic extracts of the plants are subjected to various bioassays including antioxidant, radical scavenging (by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl or DPPH) method, antimicrobial (by hole-plate diffusion method) and antihyperglycemic assay (in-vitro inhibition of α-glucosidase enzyme and in-vivo assay). The total phenolic content (TPC) of the plants was evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteau method. All tested extracts exhibited very strong antioxidant potential (>85% inhibition) in the FTC and TBA assays. In the DPPH assay, U. longiflora (stems and leaves) showed strong radical-scavenging properties with IC50 values of 8-10 µg/ml comparable to vitamin C. In the antimicrobial assay, most extracts displayed good antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. U. longiflora was found to inhibit Candida albicans with MIC value of <1.0 µg/ml for both leaves and stems comparable to cyclohexamide. In the in-vitro and in-vivo assays, U. longiflora (stems), U. acida (leaves) and U. cordata (stems) showed very good antihyperglycemic potential. On the basis of chemical and biological screening, U. longiflora (stems) was selected for phytochemical investigation. Repeated chromatographic techniques on the bioactive fraction resulted in the isolation of two major compounds ULs1 and ULs2 identified as pentacyclic alkaloids isomitraphylline and isopteropodine based on 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic data. ULs1 exhibited stronger antioxidant and α-glucosidase activities than ULs2 which could relate to better immuno-modulatory properties of isomitraphylline. In the αglucosidase inhibitory assay, these two compounds also showed dose-dependent activities indicating their potential as antihyperglycemic agents for type II diabetes

Ada sedikit perbincangan yang menyentuh tentang makna kata ganda itu sendiri. Nor Hashimah (2002) ada membincangkan kata ganda dari perspektif semantik dengan menyarankan makna khusus dan tidak khusus pada kata tersebut. Kata bilangan kardinal dan bilangan tak tentu turut dibincangkan dalam kata ganda bilangan. Kata kardinal "tiga ekor ayam" tergambar jamaknya pada "tiga" dan "ayam" tidak perlu digandakan. Penahu Melayu juga menyarankan perkara yang serupa untuk kata bilangan tak tentu. "Semua guru" ialah gambaran jamak dan tidak perlu digandakan "guru". Data korpus, sama ada yang bertulis mahupun pertuturan menggambarkan sebaliknya. Fungsi kata ganda bilangan akan menjadi lebih menarik apabila dilihat pada korpus yang lebih luas. Tujuan temubual ini di jalankan bertujuan untuk membuat kajian tentang pelukis wanita muslimah pertama ke luar Negara dan juga untuk mendapat maklumat lisan yang boleh dijadikan rujukan untuk masa akan datang dan untuk mengetahui rahsia disebalik kejayaan seorang pelukis. Menceritakan tentang kejayaan dan anugerah diperoleh oleh Puan Amy Hashimah Binti Hashim Sepanjang beliau bergiat aktif dalam bidang seni. Kaedah kajian ini dijalankan dengan secara temuramah dan mengumpul data.     Electrochemical analysis on screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) is relatively simple, rapid and reliable tool inorganic compound identification such as copper in gunshot residue (GSR). SPCE is specially designed to cope with microvolumes of sample such as GSR sample due to its potential for miniaturization and facility of automation. It would be beneficial for the quantification of copper in GSR for a forensic analyst in the fastest way at the discharging area. The coating of gold on SPCE enhances the voltammetric performances towards detection of copper, lead and diphenylamine. The coupling of voltammetry with gold coated SPCEs allows the onsite preliminary test and improves the conventional method which capable to analyze GSR in the laboratory in the long period and have a risk of sample loss. The gold coated SPCE was swabbed directly on the shooter's arm immediately after discharging a firearm and the sample SPCE was analyzed using cyclic voltammetric method. The electrochemical performances of copper, lead and diphenylamine on bare SPCE and gold coated SPCE using voltammetric method were studied. Gold coated SPCE was characterized and optimized before field work. The voltammetric sensor responded to a series of 1 ppm to 100 ppm of copper solution shows gold coated SPCE increased the percentage of reproducibility about 5 % to 17 % in aspect of current density compared to bare SPCE due to their large effective surface area, effective catalysis and fast mass transport. GSR analysis was performed on Glock, Rifle Stryer AUG-Al and Rifle Colt M16-A1 using cyclic voltammetry and Inductive Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) methods. The results obtained from cyclic voltammetric analysis show sopper concentrations detected in Glock, Rifle Stryer AUG-Al and Rifle Colt M16-A1 were 0.680 ppm, 1.349 ppm and 0.707 ppm respectively while the amounts of copper detected by ICP-OES analysis were 0.724 ppm (Glock), 1.432 ppm (Rifle Stryer AUG-Al) and 0.748 ppm (Rifle Colt M16-A1). The paired Student's t-test indicated that there was no significant difference between the results obtained from both methods at the 94 % confidence level. A p-va\ue of less than 0.05 was considered significant. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed method is reliable and can be successfully applied to the copper determination in GSR analysis

    This research is carried out to deposit and characterizes nanostructured Zinc Oxide (ZnO) thin film by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering method for ammonia (NH3 ) gas sensor application. The sensitivity of sensor is mainly depends on the surface reaction effect which strongly depends on the grain size or the surface to volume ratio of the active materials used. Therefore to achieve a highly sensitive NH3 sensor that works at room temperature, nanostructured ZnO thin films were deposited. Two types of substrate materials namely glass and thermally oxidized p-type silicon (SiO2 /Si) were investigated to determine which substrate material is more suitable for NH3 gas sensor application. The selection of the substrate materials is based on the structural and electrical properties as well as the response of ZnO thin films under the exposure of NH3 gas. This study suggested that Si0 2 /Si is the most suitable substrate for NH3 gas sensor application since it produced smaller ZnO grain size and exhibit the change in resistance when exposed to NH3 gas. In order to obtain the high sensitivity NH3 gas sensor, the study on the effect of RF magnetron sputtering parameters to the properties of ZnO was performed. The parameters that have been studied were the substrate temperature and the oxygen flow rate. This part of study recommended that the deposition at room temperature with 40 seem oxygen flow rate gave the lowest grain size (16.62 nm) which in turns reveals the highest sensitivity (94%) towards NH3 gas

Berdasarkan piawaian tersebut, kita percaya bahawa sistem pendidikan pemulihan seperti pusat pemulihan tidak seharusnya dipisahkan dan ditinggalkan dalam memikirkan tentang pendidikan yang mampan.     Many Malay grammarians, namely Asmah (1993), Nik Safiah et al. (1997), Hashim Musa (1993), Liaw Yock Fang and Abdullah Hassan (1994), and Za'ba (2000) have discussed about reduplication and their focus primarily on the morphological aspect. There are only a few studies that explore meanings of the reduplicated forms. Nor Hashimah (2002) suggests that based on semantics perspective, Malay redupli-cation conveys specific and non-specific meanings. Numerical cardinals and quantifiers are also regarded as part of reduplication. The phrase `tiga ekor ayam' (three hens) is in plural forms - the numeral `tiga' marks the plurality and the nominal 'ayam' is not reduplicated. Malay grammarians propose the same rule for quantifiers. The phrase ‘semua guru' (all teachers) is already in plural form and therefore the word 'guru' does not need to be reduplicated. Nevertheless, the writ-ten and spoken data prove otherwise. The analysis on functions of numerical reduplications will be more exiting if corpus with big data is examined.     The optimized morphology of electrospun magnesium oxide (MgO) nanofibers (NFs) can be achieved according to the parameters set during the fabrication process. However, not all materials can be synthesized together as it depends on the application needs. This research aims to study the factors that influence the morphology of the MgO NFs due to material preparations and electro spinning parameters. The research is based on data obtained from previous research papers that were analysed using MATLAB R2019a software to evaluate the effect on MgO nanofibers synthesized with different materials. The study was focused on textural properties of nanofibers such as pore-volume and fiber diameter. Based on the analysis obtained, researchers need to consider using polymer material during the electro spinning fabrication. Each type of the polymer used will produce different values of the MgO NFs diameter after calcination process. Poly-propylene glycol polymer showed a very significant difference in the fiber diameter size in the range of 60 to 76 nm as compared to polylactic acid produced big size of fiber diameter in between 3300 to 6900 nm. The analysis showed that the use of nitrogen as a carrier gas in the fabrication of electrospun MgO NFs may produce a good quality of the nanofibers
