Paddy farmers and success in knowledge transfer / Dang Merduwati Hashim
This study is an exploratory study and aims to generate a theory of success in knowledge transfer within a substantive setting. Based on the nature of the study, a qualitative approach using Glaser and Strauss (1967) grounded theory methodology is chosen. Eight farmers participated in the research. Data collection started by interviewing one farmer who is currently the Secretary for 10 Tonnes Paddy Club. Theoretical sampling is used in this study. All interviews are recorded, transcribed, analyzed, conceptualized, coded and categorized. The analytical process began with the writing of memos that described the scenes, events and behaviors of participants. The first theoretical memo was written on 31st. Jan 2005 prior to the first interview. As codes and memos build up, the relationships theoretical coding emerged. Observations were also carried out during the one-to one interview, the focus group interview and when the DOA officers met the farmers for short briefings. The research process, depicting the journey in generating the grounded theory and content of the emerging theory has been presented in the form of theoretical memos
Factors contributing to success and failure in knowledge transfer in agriculture: a grounded theory study among paddy farmers in Selangor, Malaysia / Dang Merduwati Hashim
The main objective of ' this study is to understand, identify and describe the factors contributing to success in knowledge transfer from agricultural research findings to the farmers. Ultimately, this study is aimed at generating a theory of knowledge transfer within a substantive setting by employing Glaser's principles of grounded theory. Twelve farmers and four of their family members from Kuala Selangor participated in the study. A qualitative approach using Glaser and Strauss' (1967) grounded theory methodology has been chosen due to the 'fit' qualities of the methodology, the qualities
of the researcher and the reality of constraints in collecting data from the participants. The ethics in qualitative research and fieldwork is applied in the conduct of the study. The research process. depicting the journey in generating the grounded theory and the content of emergent theory are presented in the form of' theoretical memos
Ethics in research / Dr. Dang Merduwati Hashim
All researchers are required to do their research ethically while ensuring the validity and reliability of their data. Based on the The Nuremberg Code (1947), The Helsinki Declaration (1964) and Belmont Report, the ethics in research is discussed briefly. Four (4) examples of research ethics for qualitative researchers are also discussed
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
An assessment of current practices and needs analysis of users in university industry linkages: a study in UiTM / Raenah Md Sem, Noraini Ismail and Dang Merduwati Hashim
UiTM has set up a centre called the UiTM lndustry Linkages Centre or UILC in mid-2003. The main role and function is to enable the university to provide a platform for a concerted and coordinated effort in addressing the various demands and needs of such linkages on the diverse requirements of the industry and various faculties of the university. The Center needs to conduct a pilot study to evaluate the extent of linkages so far attained by the members of the different units or faculties, the curriculum so far implemented or the extent of the teaching staff's attachment to industry, among others. As such this study aims to assess: (i) to assess the extent of current practices and (ii) the status of university industry linkages of UiTM lecturers and how they would view the role of the Centre. The first stage of the research was to conduct a focus group dialogue followed by the development of the research instrument and the field survey. A focus group dialogue was conducted with 6 companies representing the various sectors on 25 February 2004 at UiTM Hotel
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
