Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913): The life and arts of a Meiji Period literati artist. (Volumes I-III).
This dissertation focuses on the painting, calligraphy and life of Okuhara Seiko, a literati-style (bunjinga) artist and poet active throughout Japan's Meiji Period (1868-1912). The daughter of a clan official of the late Edo Period (1615-1868), Seiko received an education in Chinese studies and in painting. At the age of 28 she moved to Edo to pursue a painting career, and with her wit and painting talents, quickly entered the heart of the capital's literary and artistic circles. She remained a major figure until the early 1890s, when she retired from the capital to continue her active life of painting, travel and poetry from a countryside villa in Kumagaya. While Seiko and her works were famous in her own time, she and her fellow Meiji Period literati painters have been neglected since the 1930s. My study, concentrating on Seiko's artistic career, is the first substantial work on the artist in English. The dissertation, introduced by a thorough biography, focuses on the development and changes of Seiko's painting and calligraphy styles. The author concludes that Seiko painted primarily in two styles--the Tokai, style of the 1870s and 1880s, with its broadly brushed ink landscapes, plants and calligraphy, and her Kumagaya style of the 1890s and 1900s, characterized by detailed, full color brushwork on silk. While both styles were popular, her Tokai style, in its adaptation of 18th century Yangchou models, best exemplifies her dynamic contributions to the long literati tradition. Appendices include a discussion of her main students, a complete seal listing, a chronology and a bibliography. The text is illustrated with more than 200 plates.PhDArt historyCommunication and the ArtsUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. The Representation of Disabilities in Social Life in the Stort Story “Josee, the Tiger and the Fish”
The author seiko Tanabe reads two things: disability and gender for women. Josee's disability is used by Seiko Tanabe to highlight the social and stigma of disability, experienced by marginalized groups in Japanese culture. However, this is not just a story about “the life of a disabled person” it is a story about human beings struggling to label them selves amidst the pressures of society. Seiko Tanabe also highlights gender as one of the causes of Josee's difficulties in life because Japanese culture emphasizes the role of a woman such as the female traditional role, female sexuality, and female physical disability. However, Josee remains resilient in achieving her dreams despite the many challenges that make her want to give up. The researcher concluded the author Seiko Tanabe represents Josee as having obstacles that limit her from participating in social life like normal people in general

Data on the effect of Prussian blue feeding on the radioactive cesium content of cow’s milk
This is a dataset on the effect of PB feeding on the radioactive cesium content of cow’milk. All data were acquired from two experiments carried out at Livestock research centre, Fukushima agricultural technology centre. Before determination, the samples were dried. Radioactive Cs concentrations in samples were determined by gamma ray spectrometry using a high-purity germanium semiconductor detector (GEM40-76, Seiko Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) in experiment 1, and gamma ray spectrometry using a high-purity germanium semiconductor detector (GEM20-70, Seiko Co. Ltd.) in experiment 2. Raw data will be available by contacting corresponding author
The genetic background of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy
AbstractArrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is characterized by degeneration of the right ventricle and ventricular tachycardia originating from the right ventricle. Additionally, the disease is an inherited cardiomyopathy that mainly follows the autosomal dominant pattern. More than 10 genes have been reported as causative genes for ARVC, and more than half of ARVC patients carry mutations in desmosome related genes. The desmosome is one of the structures involved in cell adhesion and its disruption leads to various diseases, including a skin disease called pemphigus. Among desmosome genes, mutations in PKP2 are most frequently identified in ARVC patients. Although the genotype–phenotype correlations remain to be fully studied, many studies have reported clinical manifestations of, prognosis for, and appropriate therapies for ARVC from the perspective of gene mutations. A collective review of these reports would enhance the understanding of ARVC pathogenesis and clinical manifestation. This review discusses the clinical issues of ARVC from the genetic background
HIV/AIDS in rural Botswana: poverty gender inequality marginalization and stigma
HIV/AIDS in Africa has strong connections to development, poverty and gender inequality. Botswana continues to face one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in the world. The common approaches to dealing with HIV prevalence based on medical and behaviour models have not been effective in curtailing this epidemic. Particularly in rural areas, people avoid facing the reality of HIV/AIDS due to fear and stigma. In this project, the linkage between HIV/AIDS and relevant social, economic and cultural factors is explored in rural areas of northern Botswana, where marginalized minority groups, particularly the San, live in extreme poverty. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions between March and October 2004. The analysis indicates that poverty, gender inequality, traditional beliefs related to illness and healing, marginalization, and stigma interact and create the key barriers to current HIV prevention strategies. Recommendations based on my seven months of fieldwork suggest that HIV/AIDS prevention programmes must address poverty eradication, gender equality, cultural sensitivity, marginalization and stigma reduction at all levels. Economic-social rights and non-mainstream cultures of marginalized people must be respected and incorporated into policy decisions so that the communities gain ownership of prevention strategies against devastating HIV/AIDS problems.--Page ii.The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b129518
Facile Synthesis of Bicyclo Orthoesters and Bicyclo Amide Acetals Using α,α-Difluoroalkylamines
Bicyclo orthoesters and amide acetals were prepared from the corresponding triols or diethanolamine using α,α-difluoroalkylamines. The reaction proceeds under milder conditions compared with the conventional methods. 4-tert-Butyl-1-(4-ethynylphenyl)trioxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, a new class of insecticide, was prepared from a triol in 3 steps using a difluoroalkylamine
