    Partisan policy-making in Western Europe : how ideology influences the content of government policies

    Sebastian Hartmann aims at answering the question whether socioeconomic policies implemented by governments are generally rather similar or whether their content actually varies with the ideological background of governments. In addition, he wants to find out whether government characteristics such as coalition or minority situations impact the degree of partisan policy-making. The author employs a new dataset of social and economic policies collected for several Western European countries. By conducting a wide range of empirical analyses and by using an innovative approach for analysing the policy output, he shows that ideology indeed matters. However, the degree of its influence is contingent upon structural characteristics of governments

    In Part 1 of “Operación Pedro Pan: The Voices and Stories of Cuba’s Child Exodus—A Knights HistoryCast Mini-Series,” the Department of History’s Sebastian Garcia talked with Alexis Castellanos, an author, illustrator, graphic novelist, and a panelist at the esteemed, conspicuous, and powerful “Operación Pedro Pan: Honoring the Cultural, Historical Legacy of Cuba’s Child Exodus” Two-Day Program that Florida Humanities, UCF’s Department of English and Department of Modern Languages and Literatures sponsored (see https://cah.ucf.edu/pedro-pan/ for more details on sponsors and the program in general). Sebastian structured this specific episode on Alexis Castellanos’ Isla to Island, a wordless graphic novel grounded by her personal family history and the history of Operación Pedro Pan (Operation Peter Pan).     X-ray propagation in tapered waveguides: Simulation and optimization

    We use the parabolic wave equation to study the propagation of X-rays in tapered waveguides by numerical simulation and optimization. The goal of the study is to elucidate how beam concentration can be best achieved in X-ray optical nanostructures. Such optimized waveguides can e.g. be used to investigate single biomolecules. Here, we compare tapering geometries, which can be parametrized by linear and third-order (Bezier-type) functions and can be fabricated using standard e-beam lithography units. These geometries can be described in two and four-dimensional parameter spaces, respectively. In both geometries, we observe a rugged structure of the optimization problem's "gain landscape". Thus, the optimization of X-ray nanostructures in general will be a highly nontrivial optimization problem. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
