    Paradoxes and management approaches of competing for work in creative professional service firms

    Despite their business relevance, creative professional service firms are under-researched, in particular with regard to how they compete for work. Competing for work is key to survival, but also extremely challenging due to the complexity of the services offered. In this paper we use a paradox framework to investigate the opposing demands that creative professional service firms experience when competing for work. Based on a set of semi-structured interviews in the context of architectural competitions, we show that creative professional service firms face two interwoven paradoxes which relate to the strategic intent (why to compete) and the design intent (what to propose) of client propositions. We describe these paradoxes and explain how organizations manage and cope with them through both synthesis and separation management approaches. Contributions of this study can be found in theorizing paradoxes of competing for work from the professional service provider's perspective, and in fostering the firms’ paradoxical mind-set, which facilitates the acceptance and resolution of complexity and different competing demands.Accepted Author ManuscriptPublic Commissionin

    <i>Neolindus brachati</i> sp. n., <i>Neolindus luciamans</i> sp. n. <p> <b>Zusammenfassung</b></p> <p> Zwei Arten der Gattung <i>Neolindus</i> Scheerpeltz, 1933 werden beschrieben, abgebildet und von ähnlichen bzw. geographisch nahen Arten unterschieden: <i>N. luciamans</i> sp. n. (Peru: Provinz Huanuco) und <i>N. brachati</i> sp. n. (Venezuela: Provinz Carabobo). <i>Neolindus rudiculus</i> Herman, 1991 wird erstmals seit der Originalbeschreibung nachgewiesen.</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p> The subtribe Cylindroxystina is one of the few Neotropical paederine taxa that have been subject to modern revisions. According to Herman (1991), it comprises two genera and 47 species, <i>Cylindroxystus</i> Bierig, 1943 (14 species) and <i>Neolindus</i> Scheerpeltz, 1933 (33 species). Four additional species of <i>Neolindus</i> were described recently by Asenjo (2011) and Irmler (2011).</p> <p> Both <i>Cylindroxystus</i> and <i>Neolindus</i> have been collected remarkably rarely and in small numbers; numerous species are represented only by single specimens. The revision by Herman (1991) is based on a total of merely 37 (<i>Cylindroxystus</i>) and 79 specimens (<i>Neolindus</i>), respectively. Most of them were found in leaf litter and at lower elevations, but the reproduction habitat is essentially unknown.</p> <p> In material of Staphylinidae collected by Volker Brachat (Geretsried) in Venezuela in 2005 and 2007 and by Günter Riedel (München) in Peru in October 2010, five specimens of <i>Neolindus</i> were discovered, a female of unknown identity (probably undescribed), a female of <i>N. rudiculus</i> Herman, 1991, and three specimens (two males and one female) belonging to two undescribed species from Peru and Venezuela.</p> <p>Material and methods</p> <p>The material treated in this study is deposited in the author´s collection.</p> <p>The morphological studies were conducted using a Stemi SV 11 microscope (Zeiss Germany) and a Jenalab compound microscope (Carl Zeiss Jena). A digital camera (Nikon Coolpix 995) was used for the photographs.</p> <p>Head length was measured from the anterior margin of the frons to the posterior margin of the head, elytral length at the suture from the apex of the scutellum to the posterior margin of the elytra, total length from the anterior margin of the mandibles to the apex of the abdomen, the length of the forebody from the anterior margin of the mandibles to the posterior margin of the elytra, aedeagal length from the apex of the internal structures or from the apex of the dorsal plate (whichever is the longest) to the base of the capsule.     COVID-19 and the Internet: Lessons Learned

    The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the ‘real’ world and substantially impacted the virtual world and thus the Internet ecosystem. It has caused a significant exogenous shock that offers a wealth of natural experiments and produced new data about broadband, clouds, and the Internet in times of crisis. In this chapter, we characterise and evaluate the evolving impact of the global COVID-19 crisis on traffic patterns and loads and the impact of those on Internet performance from multiple perspectives. While we place a particular focus on deriving insights into how we can better respond to crises and better plan for the post-COVID-19 ‘new normal’, we analyse the impact on and the responses by different actors of the Internet ecosystem across different jurisdictions. With a focus on the USA and Europe, we examine the responses of both public and private actors, with the latter including content and cloud providers, content delivery networks, and Internet service providers (ISPs).     Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases and Lifestyle Factors for Seafarers : a Comparison of European and Kiribati Crew Members

    Einleitung Gemäß Reederei-interner Beobachtungen besteht unter der dort umfangreich vertretenden Besatzungsgruppe von dem pazifischen Inselstaat Kiribati ein offensichtliches Risikoverhalten in Bezug auf übermäßige und fettreiche Ernährung. Ziel dieser Studie war es, das kardiovaskuläre Risiko von Seeleuten insbesondere hinsichtlich Lifestyle-bezogener Faktoren abzuschätzen und die Ergebnisse kiribatischer und europäischer Besatzungsmitglieder miteinander zu vergleichen. Methoden Im Zeitraum von April bis August 2014 wurden 81 Seemänner (48 Kiribati, 33 Europäer mit einem Durchschnittsalter von 38,9 und 36,7 Jahren) auf vier, den Atlantik überquerenden Containerschiffen im Rahmen einer maritimen Felderhebung untersucht (Teilnahmequote: 90,9%). Das kardiovaskuläre Risiko zwischen den beiden kulturell unterschiedlichen Besatzungsgruppen war durch eine Summenbildung etablierter kardialer Risikofaktoren vergleichbar. Außerdem wurde mit den teilnehmenden Seeleuten ein kardialer Fitnesstest (Chester Step Test) durchgeführt sowie die aktuelle Stressbelastung an Bord mittels Perceived Stress Scale abgeschätzt. Weiterhin erfolgten eine Bestimmung von Blutparametern und eine Erhebung des Alltags-durchschnittlichen Energieverbrauchs sowie der Aktivitätsprofile mittels Bodymedia Armbandmonitor. Ergebnisse Ausgehend von der Anzahl der kardiovaskulären Risikofaktoren wurden 35,4% der Kiribati und 16,7% der Europäer der Gruppe mit erhöhtem kardialen Risiko zugeteilt (p= 0,042). Dabei fanden sich z.B. deutlich unterhalb des Referenzwertes der WHO liegende HDL-Werte der Kiribati (34,9 mg/dl) im Vergleich zu Europäern (44,8 mg/dl) (p= 0,002). 91,7% der Kiribati sowie 51,5% der Europäer wiesen gemäß WHO-Kriterien ein Übergewicht auf - bei einem durchschnittlichen BMI von 30,3 bzw. von 25,6 (p< 0,001). Kiribatische Seeleute nahmen im Rahmen der 12monatigen Beobachtungszeit trotz eines objektivierten hohen Kalorienverbrauchs durchschnittlich 6 kg zu. Diskussion Insgesamt weisen die erhobenen Daten auf ein erhöhtes, vornehmlich alimentär bedingtes kardiovaskuläres Risiko insbesondere unter kiribatischen Seeleuten hin. Die nachgewiesene deutliche Gewichtszunahme der Kiribati trotz eines hohen Energieverbrauchs an Bord ist besorgniserregend.Introduction According to internal observations within shipping companies, obvious risk-behaviour persists amongst the crew members coming from the pacific Island state of Kiribati, which make up a large part of the crew. These observations record excessive and aliphatic eating habits amongst the Kiribati. The following research aims at assessing the cardiovascular risk sailors are exposed to and how these are impacted by their lifestyle choices. To do so, the research compares European and Kiribati crewmembers. Materials and Methods For the maritime fieldwork 81 sailors (48 Kiribati, 33 European, average age at 38,9and 36,7 years respectively) were analysed during in the months of April until August 2014on four containerships crossing the Atlantic Ocean (participant rate at 90,9%). The cardiovascular risk amongst the two culturally diverse groups within the crew was qualified for comparison through a summation of established cardiac risk factors. Furthermore, participants underwent a cardiac fitness test (Chester Step Test) and the prevalent stress levels aboard were evaluated through the Perceived Stress Scale. Apart from that, blood parameters and daily energy consumption were determined, as well as establishing activity profiles through Bodymedia monitors strapped to the participants’ upper arm. Results From the amount of cardiovascular risk factors, 35,4% of the Kiribati and 16,7% of the European crew-members were determined to have a higher risk of suffering from cardiac diseases (p=0,042). For the Kiribati HDL-values were found to be considerably lower (34,9mg/dl) than the references values given by the WHO and in comparison to the European crew members (44,8mg/dl) (p=0,002). 91,7% of Kiribati and 51,5% of European participants were found to be overweight according to WHO-criteria – BMIs averaged at 30,3 and 25,6 respectively (p<0,001). Kiribati sailors were measured to have an average weight gain of 6kg over the 12 months period of analysis, in spite of an objectively high level of calorie consumption. The Chester Step Test showed participants to have an above average cardic level of fitness. According to the Perceived Stress Scale, 15,2% of Kiribati had a subjectively higher perceived stress level in comparison to 3,2% of Europeans, although objectively long work hours and short periods of sleep impacted the work routine of all sailors on the ship equally. Discussion In total the compiled data points towards a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases through alimentary habits within the crew members of Kiribati origin. The definite weight-gain measured amongst the Kiribati in spite of higher energy consumption levels at sea is alarming. The results of the study thereby confirm the necessity of health-improving interventions aboard cargo vessels
