Author, publisher and bookseller : a tripartite synergy in Nigerian book industry

No full text
This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country

TH variation in Hong Kong English

No full text
The current study examines patterns of TH variation in Hong Kong English (HKE). In particular, it examines patterns in the realization of the voiceless interdental fricative /θ/ as the voiceless labiodental fricative [f],2a process known as TH-fronting, as well as realization of the voiceless of TH as [s]. Previous research on HKE (Bolton & Kwok 1990; Hung 2000; Deterdinget al.2008; Setteret al.2010) has established that TH-fronting is a variable phenomenon in HKE, with both intra- and inter-speaker variation, though no research to date has examined the social and linguistic constraints that govern this phenomenon in HKE. The current study also examines the realization of TH as [s], which has not been documented in previous research on HKE, but was found to be a variant of TH in the current study. This article thus examines the social (defined here as non-linguistic constraints such as gender, medium of instruction and proficiency) and linguistic (syllable position, linguistic environment, stress) factors which impact the realization of TH in HKE and whether these factors differ for the realization of TH as [f] or [s].</jats:p

The eclipse of the goal of zero inflation

William J. Barber's study of Alvin H. Hansen (1887-1975) emphasized the importance of the intellectual transformation that led to the "'Keynes-Hansen intellectual system that appeared to have compelling diagnostic and prescriptive power" (Barber 19X7. 205).1 Between 1936 and 1938, Hansen became a convert to Keynesian economics, and this led to the Hicks-Hansen IS-LM model. Subsequent authors (including Phillips in the 1950s) concluded that this approach, being an equilibrium model, did not capture the disequilibrium "essence" of Keynes (Lipsey 19X I, 547). The purpose of this article is to highlight a second intellectual transformation in Hansen's policy advocacy, and to suggest the possibility that, once again, Hansen contributed to a Keynesian economics that was in conflict with Keynes's stated position. I will also discuss a parallel transformation in the policy advocacy of Sumner H. Slichter ( 1892-1959), who was, like Hansen, a Harvard University professor

Dissipative Range Scaling of Higher Order Structure Functions for Velocity and Passive Scalars

No full text
Differently to Kolmogorov's second similarity hypothesis, we find that the 2n-th order velocity and scalar structure functions scale with n-th order moment of the energy dissipation and the scalar dissipation, respectively. The origins of this scaling are analyzed by the transport equations of the fourth order velocity and scalar increment moments and by direct numerical simulations
