Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    No full text
The following dissertation approaches internationalization issues, an area of great interest for the author, namely due to her own international experience. A Master program abroad and a professional internship in communication, in an international business school, were the two greatest experiences that led to the development of this dissertation. The information analyzed about this issue showed the need to search for actions at an international level and to reflect about the need to develop vision, based on strategies and, namely from a strategic action of higher education institutions, taking into consideration its current different targets and global scenario. Thus, this dissertation presents the management and strategic concepts applicable to higher education sector and suggests communication as a strategic tool for all organizations, especially for those that are in a beginning and/or advanced stage of internationalization. Along with this, it presents one of Michael Porter´s models that suggests guidelines for industrial internalization processes, with special focus on the knowledge and use of competitive advantages from this type of organization. In the case of the present dissertation it does not approache industries, but higher education institutions and therefore this model was adapted to this reality. Thus, this model works like a script for these institutions to act strategically in the global scenario, focusing four different elements: specialization, communication, cooperation, and internationalization strategy. To sum up, this case study presents the internationalization experience at a Portuguese Business School that has been dealing with a strategic internationalization process through cultural, political and organizational changes

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

In this work we intend to reflect on the relationship between the performing arts and the construction and transmission of the so-called cultural memory. On the one hand we will discuss some of the main concepts of memory, especially the concept of collective memory and its role in shaping cultural identities. On the other hand we intend to prove the representative power of the body and its movement, including its ability to create meaning. To illustrate the theory presented we will analyze a particular artistic object in the field of the performing arts – the performance VALE, by Madalena Victorino and an Artemrede‟s production, a project which recollects the memories, traditions and customs of the Tagus Valley to represent them on stage through the language of contemporary dance and music

On this document we intend to formulate a study on the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility in Portugal, understand its relation to Social Marketing and illustrate some of the advantages that stem from adopting a socially responsible business behaviour, which in turn helps the understanding, communication, propagation and growth of this business strategy in Portugal. The European Union plays a key role on the concept’s growth in Europe and exerts great influence in its acceptability. Resorting to examples, we will seek to state that the CSR strategy, when accepted willingly and supported by all stakeholders, can produce a series of competitive and economic benefits to the company in the long run: image strengthening, reputation, distinguishing itself from the competition (due to the creation of the worthy social product) and consumer confidence are some of the identified advantages and key parts on the success of a brand in today’s market. We decided to examine the case study of McDonald’s Portugal company, an example of how a change in strategy and a socially responsible behaviour can influence consumer’s perception on a certain brand and at the same time contribute to the brand’s success and sustainable development

A new visibility: on culture, translation and cognition

Current research in Translation Studies has expanded the perspective on Translation – and the notion of its centrality not only as a question of language but also as a crucial issue for the study of culture and the human mind. The present volume builds upon these developments, endowing a new visibility to culture, translation and cognition in their conceptual interdependence. It follows necessarily a multidimensional and thus multidisciplinary approach, dealing with topics such as the translation of historical narrative, a semio-cognitive approach to translation, translation and imagination, the epistemic status of the term translation and its conceptual identity and transversality, notes on world literature and translation, the voice of the translator, the issue of dictionaries and the question of translation in a mobile world.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Der Lusitanische Popanz. O colonialismo português num drama alemão

The article contextualizes the play "Der Lusitanische Popanz / The Lusitanian Bogeyman" in the work of Peter Weiss and reconstructs the materials and processes that the writer applied in the construction of this piece on the basis of the positions assumed as "author in a divided world" and corresponding to the principles of documentary theater. Weiss used newspaper articles, documentaries and other sources, especially the book "Portugal am Pranger", which Gerhard Kramer published in 1964 at Dietz Verlag in Berlin in the then German Democratic Republic (R.D.A.). In all cases, the author works and orders the information in a way to build a model of resistance to colonialism, and not just a portrait of the specific Portuguese case.
