Hand and wrist configurations in patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The association between hand and wrist configurations was investigated in this study. The hand and wrist dimensions of sixty patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and sixty healthy control subjects were measured using specific anatomical landmarks. The palm width was significantly greater in the patient group. There was no significant difference in the hand length between the two groups. Both the wrist width and wrist depth were significantly greater in the patient group. The hand ratio and the wrist ratio were significantly smaller in the patient group indicating that the latter had squarer hands and wrists than the control group respectively. This suggests that the anatomy of the hand and wrist may predispose to carpal tunnel syndrome.peer-reviewe
Leading chiral logarithms of KS→γγ and KS→γl+l− at two loops
AbstractWe obtain the leading divergences at two-loop order for the decays KS→γγ and KS→γl+l− using only one-loop diagrams. We then find the double chiral logarithmic corrections to the decay branching ratio of KS→γγ and to the decay rate for KS→γl+l−. It turns out that these effects are numerically small and therefore make a very small enhancement on the branching ratio and decay rate. We also derive an expression for the corrections of type logμ×LEC. Numerical analysis done for the process KS→γγ shows that these single logarithmic effects can be sizable but come with opposite signs with respect to the double chiral logarithms

Das Handekzem ist ein sehr häufiges und weit verbreitetes Krankheitsbild. Vermutlich wurde es zum ersten mal im neunzehnten Jahrhundert beschrieben. Die sozioökonomischen Auswirkungen sind enorm, was sich vor allem mit der hohen Inzidenz und Prävalenz des Handekzems in der Bevölkerung begründet. Die unterschiedliche Schwere der Symptome hat auch gewaltige Auswirkungen auf die Lebensqualität des Patienten.
Das Ziel dieser Doktorarbeit ist es, einen umfassenden und kritischen Überblick der gegenwärtigen Literatur und wissenschaftlichen Studien zur Epidemiologie, Pathogenese, Klassifizierung und Behandlung des chronischen Handekzems zu verschaffen.
Zu diesem Zweck wurden elektronische Datenbanken nach wissenschaftlichen Studien und Berichten zum chronischen Handekzem durchsucht.
Diese Suche ergab 16 unterschiedliche Behandlungsmethoden, die in 53 wissenschaftlichen Studien der letzten 40 Jahre erwähnt wurden.
Die sorgfältige Auswertung dieser Studien ergibt, dass nur 8 der 53 Studien die Kriterien für doppelblinde randomisierte klinische Studien erfüllen.
Fünf dieser erwähnten Studien benützen im Halbseitenversuch eine Hand des Patienten zur Intervention, während die andere als Kontrolle genutzt wird. Daher wurden insgesamt nur drei klinische Studien gefunden, die eine überschaubare Methodik zur Randomisierung der Patienten, doppelblinde Patienten und Versuchsleiter und separate Kontrollgruppen aufweisen können.
Dies bedeutet, dass Daten einer Population von nur 1392 Patienten aus drei wissenschaftlichen Studien als Grundlage für die Behandlung dieses weit verbreiteten Krankheitsbildes angewendet werden können.
Ferner werden die Unzulänglichkeiten der Studien diskutiert und Empfehlungen gemacht, um diese in Zukunft zu vermeiden.
Zusätzlich wurden Patientendaten von 107 Patienten mit refraktärem Handekzem, die mit Creme-PUVA-Photochemotherapie in der Lichttherapie-Abteilung in der Hautklinik der Heinrich Heine Universität in Düsseldorf behandelt wurden, gesammelt und ausgewertet. Diese Daten wurden schliesslich als Studie bei einer wissenschaftlichen Fachzeitschrift eingereicht.
Vollständiger oder teilweiser Rückgang des Handekzems wurde bei 78% der behandelten Patienten bemerkt. Die Therapie bewies sich als wirkungsvoller an Patienten mit hyperkeratotisch-rhagadiformem (85%) und dyshidrotischem (81.1%) Handekzem als bei Patienten, die unter dem atopischen (66.67%) oder Kontaktekzem (20%) litten.
Vollständiger oder teilweiser Rückgang des Handekzems wurde bei 83% der männlichen und bei 72.7% der weiblichen Patienten bemerkt. Zwei der Patienten klagten über Hautrötungen als Nebeneffekt der Bestrahlungstherapie.
Diese Ergebnisse unterstreichen die Bedeutung von Creme-PUVA-Photochemotherapie als wirksame Behandlungsmethode von chronischem Handekzem. Dies gilt insbesondere für das günstige Sicherheitsprofil in Bezug auf kurz- und langfristige Nebenwirkungen.
Abschliessend wird ein Vorschlag für einen Behandlungs-Algorithmus für das chronische Handekzem diskutiert. Hierfür werden die behandelten Studien als Grundlage genutzt.
Die Bedeutung der regelmässigen Anwendung von Emollients und Kortikosteroiden sollte betont werden. Der nächste Schritt in der Behandlung sollte UV Bestrahlungstherapie oder Alitretinoin sein. Cyclosporine bieten sich als weiterer Schritt an, wobei Röntgenbestrahlung nur für behandlungsrefraktäre Fälle angewendet werden sollte

Particle collision statistics in turbulent flows with kinematic simulation
Colliding droplets or particles in turbulent flows are important in applications ranging from rain formation in clouds to aerosol production in process engineering. To reduce the computational costs when simulating such flows, kinematic simulation (KS) is frequently applied as a cheap surrogate for direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the turbulent flow field. In this work, we provide for the first time a systematic validation of the particle collision statistics that result from KS. We show that while the particle collision frequencies for particles with different Stokes numbers are in good agreement with DNS reference data, a more detailed inspection of the flow field and particle concentration characteristics reveals significant differences between KS and DNS

The church was and is a teacher of society. The article aims to show some aspects of the Church’s responsibility in the education of the society to honesty on the example of Blessed Fr. Bronisław Markiewicz. Fr. Markiewicz knew that the witness of Christian life has enormous power and is able to rebuild whole societies. The author shows in his article that religion – according to Fr. B. Anisotropic Weighted KS-NLM Filter for Noise Reduction in MRI
The topic of denoising magnetic resonance (MR) images is considered in this paper. More in detail, an enhanced Non-Local Means (NLM) filter using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) distance is proposed. The KS-NLM approach estimates the similarity between image patches by computing the KS distance. To overcome that NLM filters assign the same role to all pixels in patches, that is, not privileging the central one, we propose a new filter, namely the Anisotropic Weighted KS-NLM (Aw KS-NLM), which better deals with central pixels within the patches by, on one hand, including a suitable weighted strategy and, on the other, by performing a local anisotropy analysis. The Aw KS-NLM has been compared to other existing non-local Means (NLM) methodologies in both MRI simulated and real datasets. Water Dimer Cation: Density Functional Theory vs Ab Initio Theory
By using density functional theory (DFT) and high-level ab initio theory, the structure, interaction energy, electronic property, and IR spectra of the water dimer cation [(H2O)(2)(+)] are investigated. Two previously reported structures of the water dimer cation [disproportionated ionic (Ion) structure and hydrazine-like (OO) structure] are compared. For the complete basis set (CBS) limit of coupled cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)], the Ion structure is much more stable (by 11.7 kcal/mol). This indicates that the ionization of water clusters produce the hydronium cation moiety (H3O+) and the hydroxy radical. The transition barrier for the interconversion from the Ion/OO structure is similar to 15/similar to 9 kcal/mol. It is interesting to note that the calculation results of the water dimer cation vary seriously depending on calculation methods. Moller-Pleset second-order perturbation (MP2) theory gives reasonable relative energies in favor of the Ion structure but reports unreasonable frequencies for the 00 structure. On the other hand, most DFT calculations with various functionals overstabilize the 00 structure. However, the DFT results with MPW1K and BH&HLYP functionals are very close to the CCSD(T)/CBS results. Thus, as for the validity test of the DFT functionals for ionized molecular systems, the energy comparison of two water dimer cation structures would be a very important criterion.X115045sciescopu
Structure, stability, thermodynamic properties and IR spectra of the protonated water cluster H+(H2O)(9)
It is not clearly known whether H-1(H2O)(9) has a 2-dimensional (2D) net-like structure or 3-dimensional (3D) structure. Thus, calculations have been carried out based on density functional theory [DFT], Moller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory (MP2), resolution of identity MP2 theory (RIMP2), and coupled cluster theory with single, double and perturbative triple excitations (CCSD(T)). For the complete basis set (CBS) limit at the CCSD(T) level of theory, two nearly isoenergetic 3D closed structures are the most stable in zero-point energy (ZPE) corrected binding energy at 0K. However, at 150 K, there are three competing 2D net-like structures. The structure with two acceptor (A) type dangling water molecules is the most stable. This structure is in good agreement with the experimental symmetric and asymmetric OH stretching peaks for the free acceptor (A) type of dangling water molecule(s) at 3650 and 3742 cm(-1). CHARACTERISTICS OF EXPANDED GRAPHITE FILLED CONDUCTIVE POLYMER COMPOSITES FOR PEM FUEL CELL BIPOLAR PLATES
This study aims to optimize the mechanical and electrical properties of electrically conductive polymer composites (CPCs) for use as a material of bipolar plates for PEM fuel cells. The thin CPCs consisting of conductive fillers and polymer resin were fabricated by a preform molding technique. Expanded graphite (EG), flake-type graphite (FG) and carbon fiber (CF) were used as conductive fillers. This study tested two types of CPCs, EG/FG filled CPCs and EG/CF filled CPCs, to optimize the material properties. First, the characteristics of EG/FG filled CPCs were investigated according to the FG ratio for 7 and 100 mu m sized FG. CPCs using 100 mu m FG showed optimal material properties at 60 wt% FG ratio, which were an electrical conductivity of 390 S/cm and flexural strength of 51 MPa. The particle size was an important parameter to change the mechanical and electrical behaviors. The flexural strength was sensitive to the particle size due to the different levels of densification. The electrical conductivity also showed size-dependent behavior because of the different contributions to the conductive network. Meanwhile, the material properties of EG/CF filled CPCs was also optimized according to the CF ratio, and the optimized electrical conductivity and flexural strength were 290 S/cm and 58 MPa, respectively. The electrical conductivity of this case decreased similarly to the EG/FG filled case. On the other hand, the behavior of the flexural strength was more complicated than the EG/FG filled case, and the reason was attributed to the interaction between the strengthening effect of CF and the deterioration of voids.
