Obligatory roles of dopamine D1 receptors in the dentate gyrus in antidepressant actions of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, fluoxetine
Depression is a leading cause of disability. Current pharmacological treatment of depression is insufficient, and development of improved treatments especially for treatment-resistant depression is desired. Understanding the neurobiology of antidepressant actions may lead to development of improved therapeutic approaches. Here, we demonstrate that dopamine D1 receptors in the dentate gyrus act as a pivotal mediator of antidepressant actions in mice. Chronic administration of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), fluoxetine, increases D1 receptor expression in mature granule cells in the dentate gyrus. The increased D1 receptor signaling, in turn, contributes to the actions of chronic fluoxetine treatment, such as suppression of acute stress-evoked serotonin release, stimulation of adult neurogenesis and behavioral improvement. Importantly, under severely stressed conditions, chronic administration of a D1 receptor agonist in conjunction with fluoxetine restores the efficacy of fluoxetine actions on D1 receptor expression and behavioral responses. Thus, our results suggest that stimulation of D1 receptors in the dentate gyrus is a potential adjunctive approach to improve therapeutic efficacy of SSRI antidepressants. © 2018, The Author(s).1

Linearly polarized lasing in one-dimensional hybrid photonic crystal containing cholesteric liquid crystal

Phys. 101, 033120 (2007) and may be found at https://doi.org/10.1063/1.2434835.We have achieved single-mode laser action in a one-dimensional hybrid photonic crystal (HPC) containing cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) as a defect and experimentally investigated the polarization characteristics of the laser light. The laser light emitted from the HPC containing the CLC was linearly polarized, which was different from that of the simple CLC, despite the CLC being contained in this structure. We have theoretically calculated the optical propagation to justify the experimental result. The calculated result was in good agreement with the experimental result and showed the difference in optical characteristics between the simple CLC and the HPC containing the CLC

Low-threshold and high efficiency lasing upon band-edge excitation in a cholesteric liquid crystal

The responsible mechanism originates from the dramatic increase of the optical density of state (DOS) at the band edges. The calculated DOS of the CLC system confirms the authors’ experimental results
Ultraviolet light responses in photovoltaic properties of TiO₂ / conducting polymer heterostructure devices

Lett. 85, 3139 (2004) and may be found at https://doi.org/10.1063/1.1804234.Photovoltaic properties of heterostructure devices of titanium oxide (TiO2) and conducting polymer thin films have been studied. Normal photovoltaic properties were stably observed upon the visible light irradiation of the wavelength range corresponding to the absorption of a conducting polymer, and unique photovoltaic properties were also observed upon the ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation of the wavelength range corresponding to the absorption of TiO2. UV light irradiation caused marked increases in the short-circuit current at the visible-wavelength range and in the open-circuit voltage. These properties have been discussed by considering the enhancement of the built-in field which originates from the hole accumulation caused by the trap levels in the TiO2 layer or TiO2 ∕ conducting polymer interface. サメガレイClidoderma asperrimum の筋肉脂質における全-cis-5,8,11,14,17,20,23-ヘキサコサヘプタエン酸(26:7n-3)の存在
Fatty acid analysis of roughscale sole Clidoderma asperrimum flesh lipids was carried out by gas chromatography. An unidentified peak appeared in the chromatogram in the elution region of ≥C24 fatty acids. After enrichment by solvent partitioning, reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and argentation TLC, the peak component was subjected to structural analyses. The partially hydrogenated products after reaction with hydrazine hydrate gave seven isomers of cis-hexacosenoic acid (26:1). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analyses of their dimethyl disulfide adducts identified the monounsaturates as 5-, 8-, 11-, 14-, 17-, 20-, and 23-26:1. The peak component was assigned to all-cis-5,8,11,14,17,20,23-hexacosaheptaenoic acid (26:7n-3). GC–MS analyses of the 4,4-dimethyloxazoline derivative and methyl ester confirmed this structure. This fatty acid is a rare, very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (VLCPUFA). The concentrations of the acid found in roughscale sole were 0.69 ± 0.34% (N = 5) of total fatty acids in flesh lipids. Roughscale sole appears to be characterized by the occurrence of 26:7n-3, which is lacking in popular sources of methylene-interrupted VLCPUFA, such as vertebrate retina, spermatozoa, and herring. 北海道産サメガレイの筋肉脂質の脂肪酸をGC で分析したところ,炭素数24 以上の領域に未知のピークが出現した。この成分を濃縮後,数種の誘導体に変換してGC-MSに供した結果,同成分は全-cis-5,8,11,14,17,20,23-ヘキサコサヘプタエン酸(26:7n-3)と同定された。総脂肪酸中の含有量は供試5 個体の平均で0.69±0.34%であった。サメガレイは,n-3 系およびn-6 系超長鎖ポリエン酸の給源として一般的な高等動物の網膜,精子,ニシン油などには見られない26:7n-3 を含む点で特徴的である
