“This imperfect scrawl”: Neighbor Maria G. Ham Remembers the Canterbury Shakers, 1839-1908

    No full text
Sometime between 1915 and 1925, the then elderly Maria Gerrish Ham (1833–1925) corresponded with Oakes K. Lawrence (1899–1971), the young son of former tenants who had rented a farmhouse on her family property in Canterbury, New Hampshire, fifteen to twenty years earlier. Ham’s property abutted the religious commune in Canterbury owned by the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Coming, commonly known as the Shakers, one of America’s most enduring communal religious societies. The Ham family had been neighbors of the Shakers since the founding of the community in the early 1790s. Maria was their neighbor for seventy-six years, had good relations with them, and counted dozens of Shaker brothers and sisters from the village as friends and acquaintances. One of the letters from Ham’s correspondence with Lawrence survives and is mixed in with Canterbury’s town records in the collections of the New Hampshire State Archives in nearby Concord. The unpublished eight-page letter is a reminiscence of Ham’s dealings with Canterbury Shakers, providing remarkable insight as to how their neighbors, and Ham in particular, a close friend and ally, interacted with them during the peak years of the community’s history

Alexander Hamilton: Adultery and Apology: Observations on Certain Documents in the History of the United States for the Year 1796

    No full text
Written by Hamilton himself to confess to the affair he conducted with Maria Reynolds, Alexander Hamilton: Adultery and Apology is Hamilton’s attempt to defend and rationalize his misdoings, and ultimately salvage what was left of his reputation. The pamphlet was originally published in 1796 after accusations of the adultery arose. This personal exposé reveals a man, whom the public initially revered as a politician and Founding Father, as a flawed human-being. Within these documents Hamilton describes his exploits in impeccable detail and languid prose, at the risk of tarnishing his public image, to prove to the public that he had nothing to hide. With a new foreword by Robert Watson, presidential scholar and author of Affairs of State, delve into this exquisite, essential account of history’s most scandalous love affairs.https://spiral.lynn.edu/facbooks/1023/thumbnail.jp

You may ask, “what is an extreme sport?” An extreme sport is one that involves more risk or injury than average sports. It is an adrenaline pumping activity. One of the more popular extreme sports at HJH is Skate Boarding. There are others such as snow boarding, mountain biking, wake boarding, and BMX’ing. Josh Gabrial is an extreme skate boarder. He skates at the new Lethbridge Skate Park on the north side of town. He also likes the area downtown around the Centre Place Mall. He looks for steps, small walls, ledges and hand railings to challenge his abilities. Most skaters spend as much time as they can practicing their sport... some up to 3 hours a day. At the first of the year Adam Lastiwka and some fellow skaters when to the School Board Office with a proposal for the HJH Skateboarders. They wanted a place to do what they do! They skate at lunch hours but had been kicked off every place they had tried to skate that was near the school. They proposed that theHJH skaters be allowed to use the area that leads up to the school board office parking lot just south of the school. They knew it was an acces road to the board office parking lot and they didn’t want to bother the board office employees. So they put together a list of rules and requests to make the area safe for skateboarding while not bothering people who needed acces to the building. The superidentent, Mr. M. Clewes accepted their proposal and now the HJH skaters have a place to practice their sport near the school. 44 X-Clountry W>nners Senior Boys 1. Joel Kotkas 9:44 2. Adam Hoof 10:21 3. Paige Atkinson (grade 9) won herself a GMC Jimmy for her efforts in the bi-annual HJH fund raiser. Bridge City Chrysler donated the used sport utility vehicle to Hamilton for the event. Students participating in the fund raiser found sponsors before they took an exam. Students then collected a net amount from their sponsors or an amount per question they correctly answered on the exam. This was a more creative and fun way of raising money than selling chocolates or candles. HJH had some great sponsors so we had some great prizes. The top fundraiser was allowed to pick for first prize and every consecutive finisher picked next. Among the prizes was a round-trip for four to Edmonton courtesy of Integra Air. Coca-Cola, meanwhile, donated money to the school to help pay for basketball uniforms and glass backboards. Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

There are additional letters in the collection from Hamilton and Monroe referencing the Reynolds affair. See also Hamilton\u27s biography and a guide to research collections of his papers (http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=H000101), as well as Monroe\u27s official White House biography (http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/jm5.html) and a guide to researching his papers (http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=M000858).Hamilton writes regarding the publication of a pamphlet referencing the Reynolds affair, characterizing the attacks on Monroe (by Hamilton?) as ungrateful in light of his leniency. The papers state that Hamilton entreated Monroe and others not to tell Washington which they agreed to do in exchange for a promise of future good behavior on Hamilton\u27s part; the papers also contend that Hamilton made a voluntary acknowledgement of seduction (of Mrs. Reynolds, probably). Hamilton requests Monroe\u27s "contradiction of the Representations" in these papers with the delicacy that "one Gentleman has a right to expect from another." He also notes that there must have been some "dishonourable infidelity" to allow the story to get out. Hamilton also encloses a memorandum he made (also in the collection) of Monroe\u27s opinion after their initial interview on the subject. This is one of a series of letters in the collection referring to Hamilton\u27s involvement in the "Reynolds scandal." In 1797 accusations were brought against Hamilton by James Monroe and others, alleging that Hamilton had bribed James Reynolds to cover up financial misconduct during his tenure as Secretary of the Treasury; to preserve the honor of the financial system, Hamilton confessed that the blackmail payments resulted from an affair with Reynolds\u27 wife, Maria. Born in the British West Indies, Hamilton was effectively orphaned at age 11, and emigrated to America where he served with Washington during the Revolution. After the war he attended the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention, publishing the Federalist papers in installments in 1787, and becoming Washington\u27s Secretary of the Treasury (1789-1795). Hamilton\u27s public opposition to Aaron Burr\u27s gubernatorial candidacy in New York resulted in a challenge from Burr, and in the ensuing duel Hamilton was fatally wounded. The recipient of the letter, James Monroe would become the fifth President of the United States; he also served in the Revolution, as a Senator from Virginia (1790-94), as a member of the Continental Congress (1783-86), as Minister to France under Washington (1894-96) and Jefferson (1803, also England 1803-07), as Madison\u27s Secretary of State (1811-17), and as Secretary of War (1814-15). Frederick Muhlenberg was a preacher and politician, member of the Continental Congress (1779-80) and the House of Representatives (1789-1797) where he was the Speaker of the House for the first and third Congresses

He clarifies that the hostile "party spirit" he refers to was shown not by Monroe, but by Reynolds and Clingman, who took advantage of this spirit to make insinuations against Hamilton while they were being prosecuted for other offenses. Hamilton declares himself "satisfied with and sensible to the candour with which I had been treated" by Monroe and Muhlenberg.
