The letter hamzah: highlights of origin and background
Hamzah is a difficult letter in pronunciation compared to other letters because its point of articulation (makhraj) is located at the bottom part of the throat, the farthest compared to other points. Therefore, the symbol of hamzah also has a diverse background based on the hamzah letter identity, which has a concession (rukhsah) in the expression due to the difficulty of pronouncing it. The problem has caused confusion among the community to understand the scope of hamzah symbols found in the mushaf because the Muslim community, especially in Malaysia, is bound by the narration of Hafs bin Sulayman al-Kufi that does not reveal the change of the letter hamzah based on its identity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to reveal the correct understanding of the scope of hamzah letters involving symbols, colours and vowel marks (lines or harakat) based on the history recorded by qurra’. This descriptive study discusses the views of qurra’ related to the letter hamzah, specifically involving symbols, colours and vowel marks (lines or harakat). All data were analysed using inductive and conductive methods. The findings show that the letter hamzah has a diverse background referring to its symbols, colours and vowel marks (lines or harakat). All these backgrounds cannot be realised within the community when they are still bound by the narration of Hafs bin Sulayman al-Kufi. If this understanding is not explained in detail to the public, it is worried that the community will be confused about the identity of the letter hamzah that is subject to various changes in all aspects, whether involving symbols in the mushaf or the variety of pronunciation based on ahruf al-Sab’ah. This study can also be an added value for teachers of the Quran in understanding the scope of the letter hamzah as one of the letters in the hija’iyyah letters

Prediction of soft clay soil settlement using normalized rotational multiple yield surface framework (NRMYSF) / Hamzah Abd. Hamid
The prediction of soil settlement in geotechnical engineering can be challenging, primarily due to the influence of moisture content on soil shear strength. A reduction in shear strength can lead to increased soil settlement. In this research, the Normalized Rotational Multiple Yield Surface Framework (NRMYSF) is employed to predict settlement in soft clay soil. To achieve the objective of this research, the consolidated-drained (CD) triaxial tests were conducted. In this study, the Rotational Multiple Yield Surface Framework (RMYSF) is utilized to forecast the stress-strain curves of four sets of samples namely CD-A, CD-B, CD-C, and CD-D, at effective stresses of 50 kPa, 100 kPa, and 200 kPa. The percentage errors for these samples are 6.42%, 2.10%, 2.57%, and 1.78% respectively. To enhance accuracy, the NRMYSF is introduced, resulting in improved predictions. The NRMYSF exhibits lower percentage errors of 4.72%, 1.34%, 1.23%, and 0.67% for samples CD-A, CD-B, CD-C, and CD-D respectively. These lower error values indicate better agreement between predictions and laboratory results. The NRMYSF is extended to predict soil settlement based on shear strength stress-strain curves. Using 1D consolidation analysis, Normalized Rotational Multiple Yield Surface Framework (NRMYSF), and Settle 3D modelling software, the total settlement of soft clay soil is predicted to be 0.2048 meters, 0.1994 meters, and 0.1942 meters respectively. A comparison is made between the NRMYSF and other methods such as 1D consolidation analysis and Settle 3D software modelling, revealing difference errors of 2.7081% and 2.6078% respectively. Based on
these findings, it can be concluded that the Normalized Rotational Multiple Yield Surface Framework (NRMYSF) is a viable and practical approach for predicting soil settlement in soft clay soil
The effectiveness of Reinvestment Allowance (RA) and Tax Attributes in stimulating the performance of incentivised firms: moderating effects of foreign directorship / Fairus Halizam A. Hamzah
The debate on the implication of fiscal incentives is extensive. Nevertheless, whether tax incentives succeed in stimulating firm performance remains highly controversial and has received much attention from governments and policymakers. We aimed at providing evidence about the effect of RA and other tax attributes on firm performance. Secondly, we examined if firm directorship has a moderating effect on our regression estimation. To fully understand the effects of fiscal incentives, a systematic study is needed to link RA to not just business location, employment, economic implication development but also to the overarching issues of firm performance and growth. This research uses the Panel Least Square regression model to examine the interplay between RA and other tax attributes on firm-level performance measured by return on asset. Employing tax return data from 2007 to 2016 of corporate firms consistently claiming RA, this research affirms that RA has positively impacted the performance of incentivised firms in Malaysia. Besides RA, these incentivised firms also depend on other tax attributes such as lower effective tax rate, various tax benefits, the firm scale of operation as well as adequate tax audit monitoring. We also affirm that foreign directorship only moderates one of the tested explanatory variables used in this research, which is the effective tax rate (ETR). Overall, the evidence in this research-driven extensively by responses of the incentivised firms which addresses the issue of effective incentive utilisation and tax attributes. This research could be the first to contribute evidence on the systematic assessment of RA
Types of covariate and distribution effects on parameter estimates and goodness-of-fit test using clustering partitioning strategy for multinomial logistic regression / Hamzah Abdul Hamid
This thesis presents a simulation study on parameter estimation for binary and multinomial logistic regression, and the extension of the clustering partitioning strategy for goodness-of-fit test to multinomial logistic regression model. The motivation behind this study is influenced by two main factors. Firstly, parameter estimation is often sensitive to sample size and types of data. Simulation studies are useful to assess and confirm the effects of parameter estimation for binary and multinomial logistic regression under various conditions. The first phase of this study covers the effect of different types of covariate, distributions and sample size on parameter estimation for binary and multinomial logistic regression model. Data were simulated for different sample sizes, types of covariate (continuous, count, categorical) arid distributions (normal or skewed for continuous variable). The simulation results show that the effect of skewed and categorical covariate reduces as sample size increases. The parameter estimates for normal distribution covariate apparently are less affected by sample size. For multinomial logistic regression model with a single covariate, a sample size of at least 300 is required to obtain unbiased estimates when the covariate is positively skewed or is a categorical covariate. A much larger sample size is required when covariates are negatively skewed. In Phase 2, we investigate the goodness-of-fit (GoF) tests for multinomial logistic regression. Goodness-of-fit tests are important to assess if the model fits the data. We investigated the Type I error and power of two goodness-of-fit tests for multinomial logistic regression via a simulation study. The GoF test using partitioning strategy (clustering) in the covariate space, XP*G w a s compared with another test, Cg which was based on grouping of predicted probabilities. The power of both tests was investigated when quadratic term or interaction term were omitted from the model. The proposed test XP*G shows good Type I error and ample power except for multinomial models with highly skewed covariate distribution. Additionally, the proposed test XP*G has good power in detecting omission of continuous interaction term. Further simulation results showd that partitioning strategy using Hierarchical Clustering with Canberra distance, %C,G performs better than XP*G (Hiearchical clustering with Euclidean distance) and XI*G (Partitioning using k-medoids). The application on a real dataset confirmed the simulation results. The simulation and analyses were carried out using R, an open-source programming language for statistical computing and graphics
