Using the modified Hirsch model and the Sliver Test to forward calculate asphalt mixture complex modulus and backward calculate asphalt binder complex modulus

Protecting our asphalt pavements structures from possible distresses such as pavement cracking and pavement rutting require good understanding of materials used to construct pavement structures. When conducting QA/QC or a forensic analysis to characterize asphalt materials that were used on existing roads and highways requires extensive number of cores to be taken per section. The coring process will initiate cracks in the coring location, which will propagate later on and may lead to the formation of alligator cracks and potholes. Many of the currently utilized test apparatus utilize a minimum of a 6-inches core to provide a sample large enough to test. Sample preparation after coring is limited further by lift thickness; to not test a composite material one must cut the field core sample to ensure only one pavement lift is being tested. If the pavement design specifies a lift that is less than the minimum size for current test apparatus, no testing can be completed on that sample. Incorporating recycled asphalt materials and shingles in mixture designs makes it even more challenging to characterize combined asphalt mixture properties. The combination of virgin and recycled asphalt requires the development and implementation of material testing methods that can test asphalt mixtures in the solid form. Labs that are interested in studying the impact of aging, time, and temperature on the commingling of RAP and/or shingle asphalt on the stiffness modulus of bituminous mixtures find it difficult to use current asphalt mixture performance tests. This is due to different reasons such as time-consuming performance testing process, samples size, and test/analysis complexity. In this research, a new methodology was developed to simplify and expedite forensic testing. The developed methodology addressed previously mentioned asphalt mixture performance testing issues. The developed methodology consists of two main tools. A new test procedure using the Sliver Test ASTM D7552. A forward and backward models based on the modified Hirsch model developed by, Christensen et al, currently being used in the pavement design guide. The developed methodology successfully analyzed asphalt mixture and asphalt binder response parameters from the sliver test output. Developed methodology successfully helped forward calculate asphalt mixture complex modulus and backward calculate asphalt binder complex modulus avoiding asphalt binder chemical extraction process. The methodology was developed using 700 data points then verified using a total 1050 data points. Statistical goodness of fit parameters and coefficient of variance was performed. Results showed promise and the methodology was able to forward calculate asphalt mixture (R^2>95.5%) and asphalt binder complex modulus (R^2>87%).Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Mohamed Monir Hagga

Management of inland open water fisheries resources of Bangladesh : Issues and options

    No full text
Despite the possession of a highly productive inland water area of about 45,000 km2, the continuing decrease in fish catch increasingly threatens the livelihoods of more than 12 million fishers in Bangladesh. The government's open access and leasing policies have been identified as the principal causes of catch decline. Conflicting demands on the inland aquatic area also accelerate drastically the destruction of aquatic resources. Barriers to the access of fishers in the management of inland fisheries resources and over-exploitation by the relatively wealthier non-fisher population are reducing the options for sustaining the livelihoods of fishery dependent communities. The government has pursued a range of initiatives to arrest this continued decline but none has appeared to be appropriate. In this study we investigated the present fisheries management crisis of Bangladesh and justified the opportunities for existing fisheries management to evolve towards community based fisheries management (CBFM) to support the sustainable use of fisheries resources in future

    No full text
This paper investigates the experience of the ABC implementation in Australia by directly interviewing finance directors of the three universities. Their experience suggests that the important cost drivers, cost pools and collecting data in order to allocate overhead costs. However, they found more benefits of improved resource allocation and determination of true cost and budget surplus and well information for strategic decision. The experience of ABC implementation revealed that behavioral and organisational variables played an important role to achieve the success of ABC implementation. The paper has summarized individual model of costs pools and cost drivers for each of the universities studied. Finally, the paper developed a viable model of cost pools and cost drives of ABC implementation which the author believes that it will help the universities to improve resource allocation and to determine true cost and profitability, if this model is implemented

TOXIC DENIAL AND THE STRUGGLE FOR RECOGNITION : THE EXPERIENCES OF U.S. VIETNAM WAR-ERA VETERANS AND AGENT ORANGE CHEMICAL EXPOSURE

    No full text
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Michigan State University. Anthropology - Doctor of Philosophy, 2024During the Vietnam War, the U.S. military sprayed over 20 million gallons of Agent Orange and other chemical herbicides across Southeast Asia to clear foliage and eliminate enemy cover. These chemicals contained dioxin, one of the most toxic substances to humans. This resulted in a wide range of severe health issues for U.S. Vietnam War-era veterans, including various cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and has also been associated with birth defects in their descendants. Veterans have encountered significant challenges in gaining recognition, accessing appropriate healthcare, and obtaining disability services for their health conditions due to historical and institutional denial of their suffering. This denial has hindered efforts to fully understand the impact of Agent Orange, further complicating the pursuit of accountability and justice for those affected. This dissertation examines the complex issue of Agent Orange exposure among U.S. Vietnam War-era veterans, focusing on the systemic denial by state institutions and the consequential struggle for recognition and care. Through a biopolitical lens, my research navigates the intertwined military, political, scientific, and medical narratives and processes that have historically minimized or outright denied the sufferings and experiences of veterans. By exploring institutional denial as both a governing strategy and a source of suffering, this dissertation reveals the profound effects such denial has on the lives of these veterans and their families. Through a combination of archival research and ethnographic fieldwork, I uncover the strategic use of denial by state institutions to control the discourse surrounding Agent Orange exposure. This denial results in the manipulation of scientific information, bureaucratic processes, and political narratives that author and authorize the legitimacy of suffering, often limiting the recognition of veterans\u2019 experiences, concealing the causal connections between exposure and health consequences, and reshaping the veterans\u2019 perceptions of their own bodies and social identities. Furthermore, this dissertation explores the personal narratives of veterans and their families, revealing the \u201ctoxic residuals\u201d of institutional denial\u2014physical, emotional, social, and intergenerational burdens that underscore the stark contrast between institutional narratives of Agent Orange exposure and the actual experiences of those impacted. In addition to investigating the formation and effects of institutional denial, my research also highlights the dynamic efforts by veterans to counter institutional denial through developing knowledge networks and resources aimed at alleviating their suffering. These collective actions, rooted in biosolidarity of shared health experiences, demonstrate a powerful commitment to transforming personal experiences of suffering into broader advocacy for change and support. Through these endeavors, veterans and their families have worked to create support systems and foster a community of sufferers united in the pursuit of justice and healing.Description based on online resource. Aims: Although the relationship between pathological gambling disorder and shopping addiction, personality traits and symptoms of psychiatric disorders have previously been explored, no study has ever investigated all associations in the same study, as far as the author is aware of. The association between the applicable addictions and their relationships with demographic factors (age, gender, marital status and educational level), the dimensions of the five-factor model of personality and symptoms of mental disorders (ADHD, OCD, anxiety and depression) were explored. Methods: In this study 23.533 respondents (15.299 women and 8.234 men, age between 16 and 88 years, with average age at 35.8 years (SD=13.3)) completed a national survey, committed in five Norwegian national online newspapers, assessing the association between different excessive behaviors, demographic factors, personality traits and symptoms of impaired health The respondents got immediately feedback regarding their addiction-scores when the questionnaire was completed. Results: All bivariate intercorrelations between shopping addiction and gambling addiction, personality traits and symptoms of psychiatric disorders were significant, except for gambling addiction which showed non-significant relationships between extraversion and openness to experience. Multiple hierarchical linear regression analysis showed that young women with lower educational level correlated with shopping addiction, whilst men with the same characteristics were related to pathological gambling disorder. Also, both addictive behaviors were positively and significantly related to neuroticism and extraversion, and negatively significantly associated to openness to experience, conscientiousness and agreeableness when checked for demographic factors. Regarding symptoms of mental disorders, these following associations were positive and significant when checked for both demographic and personality variables: ADHD and OCD correlated with both applicable addictions, anxiety was related to shopping addiction and depression was associated with gambling addiction. Conclusions: All the relationships suggest several underlying pathological risk factors. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that the total models (demographic, personality and mental disorder variables) explained between 6% and 24% of the variance in the addictive behaviors. Clinical implications and methodological considerations were discussed

Meta-analyses of the global multilocus genotypes of the human pathogen Campylobacter jejuni

    No full text
Campylobacter infections are a leading cause of bacterial diarrheal illness worldwide, with increasing reports of outbreaks in both developing and developed countries. Most studies investigating strain genotypes and epidemiology of C. jejuni examined on a local scale. Using the archived multilocus sequence typing data at seven loci, and associated strain metadata from the pubMLST database, here we investigated the spatial and temporal genetic structure of the global population of C. jejuni. Our analyses revealed evidence for clonal dispersals of multiple sequence types (STs) among countries and continents. However, despite the observed clonal dispersal and that most genetic variations were found within individual geographic subpopulations, both the non-clone-corrected and clone-corrected samples showed evidence of significant genetic differentiation among national and continental subpopulations, with non-clone-corrected samples showing greater differentiation than clone-corrected samples. Phylogenetic incompatibility analyses provided evidence for recombination within each continental subpopulation. However, linkage disequilibrium analyses rejected the hypothesis of random recombination across the samples. Temporally, multiple STs were found to persist across four decades and the five globally most common STs showed relatively stable frequencies over the last two decades. We discussed the implications of our results to food security, disease transmission and public health management. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Self-healing in epoxy thermoset polymer films triggered by UV light

    No full text
Self-healing of damaged structures can occur in three processes: capsule-based healing, vascular healing and intrinsic healing of polymers. The latest concept has a tremendous potential to repair damaged polymers and composite structures. Until now self-healing of composite materials has been addressed using capsule based resin with an initiator that polymerises in the damaged region. In this study, self-healing behaviour of cured epoxy thermoset resins modified with an epoxy-functionalised photoresponsive azobenzene molecule has been addressed by UV light without the use of any resin capsules or other component that is not chemically joined with the composites. The study was executed by nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Artificially damaged thermoset films exhibited good self-healing behaviour under UV irradiation only. This effect is attributed to the intrinsic healing mechanism triggered by UV-induced trans→cis isomerization of the azobenzene chromophore which enables the damaged polymeric matrix to recover.Funded by Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL
