AbstractMigraine is one of the most challenging diseases, putting a strain on health services and lowering the quality of life of those who suffer from it. By identifying the pre-symptoms of migraine and using self-measurement technology, detailed information can be collected, and health problems can be addressed. This study explored migraine patients’ perceptions of the benefits they perceive to be important when using technology applications in the self-care of their migraine condition. The aim of this study in the field of computer science was to investigate the technological solutions, the use, and the patients’ expectations of the benefits of wearable sensors. Previous studies have not combined these three perspectives. This study analysed the willingness of migraine patients to use wearable sensors to support self-care and the use of an electronic migraine diary for migraine management. The study was carried out using a qualitative multi-method study. The research data was based on 582 email survey responses, 12 qualitative interviews and user experiences of the Empatica E4 device. The study showed that migraine patients wanted wearable sensors to support self-care by identifying the pre-symptoms of migraine and an electronic migraine diary to monitor migraine attacks. Together, the wearable device and the electronic migraine diary support the patient’s self-care.The dissertation resulted in a perspective model of wearable sensors. The model provides new insights from three different perspectives: technologies and biosignals, user experiences and benefit expectations to support self-care of migraine patients.Original papersOriginal papers are not included in the electronic version of the dissertation.Huttunen, H.-L., & Halonen, R. Migreenin ennakko-oireiden tunnistamisella ja itsensä mittaamisen teknologialla mahdollistetaan yksityiskohtaisen tiedon kerääminen ja terveysongelmiin vastaaminen. Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin migreenipotilaiden käsityksiä siitä, mitä hyötyjä he itse pitävät tärkeänä teknisten sovellusten käytössä migreenisairautensa omahoidossa.Tämän tietojenkäsittelytieteenalaan kuuluvan tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia puettavien sensoreiden teknologiaratkaisuja, käyttöä ja potilaiden hyötyodotuksia. Aikaisemmat tutkimukset eivät ole yhdistäneet näitä kolmea näkökulmaa. Tässä tutkimuksessa analysoitiin migreenipotilaiden halukkuutta käyttää puettavia sensoreita omahoidon tukena ja sähköisen migreenipäiväkirjan hyödyntämistä migreenin hoidossa.Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisella monimenetelmätutkimuksella. Lapouge, Ber. Bunsenges Phys. Chem. 99, 544 (1995)Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Princeton UniversityThe first C-H stretching overtone region of nitromethane has been measured using a bolometer detected molecular beam machine with a resonance cavity. Nitromethane is an almost free rotor with a very low torsional barrier in the ground state. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the low 6-fold barrier of the ground state will turn to a much higher 2-fold barrier in the first stretching vibrational overtone of nitromethane with 2 quanta of stretching vibrational energy.benergy. ^{b} This might happen, if the vibrational energy would stay localised in one bond long enough compared with the period of internal rotation. The spectrum of nitromethane has been measured in the wavenumber region 60476055cm16047-6055 cm^{-1} with a resolution of 5MHz. As the rotational temperature is very low, only levels with the internal rotation quantum number m=0 and m=1 should be significantly populated. The spectrum has been assigned using ground state combination differences. Using a rigid rotor program the band center and the rotational constants have been obtained for the m=0 state. The analysis of the m=1 state is in progress

Energy efficient innovative lighting and energy supply solutions in developing countries

The vast majority of the rural population in the de veloping countries is out of reach of electricity and hence has to depend on the tradi tional fuels to fulfil the daily energy needs. Providing grid electricity to the rural areas of ma ny developing countries is a very difficult task due to the geographical complexity and lack of fina ncial resources. The paper explains the use of different renewable energy sources in combination w ith efficient lighting technology as a realistic option to provide clean lighting services to develo ping countries. The application of Light Emitting Diodes and renewable energy sources has be en a sustainable solution to the basic lighting needs of rural people. The paper also pres ents a comparison of costs between available renewable energy technologies

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Square Dancing with the Stars to Enhance Dynamic Hirschman Linkages?

In this Presidential Address, the author takes the reader on a reconnaissance of his life and time as a regional scientist. He points out scenery he found scintillating along the way, hoping that some may pick up the banner and chew on a few of the ideas for a while. He suggests a revisit to Albert O. Hirschman’s notion of key sectors and more empirical analysis related to Marcus Berliant’s and Masahisa Fujita’s notion of knowledge creation and transfer.Presidential Address, San Antonio, Texas, March 29, 2014 (53rd Meetings of the Southern Regional Science Association

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

a^{a}Permanent address of M. and L. Halonen: Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, P.O. Box 55 (A.I. Virtasen aukin 1), FIN-00014 University of Helsinki, FinlandAuthor Institution: Department of Chemistry, Princeton University; FB9-Anorganische Chemie, Universit\""{a}t-GH WuppertalHigh resolution FTIR spectra of the ν2/ν4\nu_{2}/\nu_{4} and the ν1/ν3\nu_{1}/\nu_{3} bands of 120SnD4^{120}SnD_{4} have been measured with a Bruker 120 HR interferometer. The sample was prepared under vaccum using a two step synthesis. The ν2/ν4\nu_{2}/\nu_{4} region (425620cm1425-620 cm^{-1}) was studied using a liquid He-cooled bolometer, while an MCT detector was used in the ν1/ν3\nu_{1}/\nu_{3} region (12751455cm11275-1455 cm^{-1}). The resolution of the spectra are 0.0033cm10.0033 cm^{-1} and 0.0024cm1cm^{-1}, respectively. The measurement of the first and second stretching overtones is in progress, too. The results will be compared with those of normal stannane, SnH4SnH_{4}. In the case of normal stannane vibrational localisation has been found to take place in stretching vibrational overtones. Thus the dynamical symmetry of stannane, a spherical top molecule, has been found to become that of a prolate symmetric top
