    Heavy metals in free-ranged and farmed chickens / Hairul Ameelda Hairul lkhsan

    Background: In polluted regions, such as an ex-mining area or an industrial area, free-range chickens can accumulate high concentrations of potentially toxic heavy metals, such as lead, copper, cadmium, and zinc, particularly in liver and kidney. Heavy metals are able to bioaccumulate higher in liver compared to meat. Contaminated meat is a source of illness in human beings; in this case, heavy metals are directly related to health diseases in humans. Among other routes, food is one of the main sources of consumer exposure to heavy metals. Methodology: This study is an observational study, where samples purchased are all from broilers grown in Kuala Langat district only. For sample preparation, wet digestion method was used. PerkinElmer's Flame Atomic Absorption Spectoscopy (FAAS) model PinAAcle -, 900T is used to analyze heavy metals concentration in the samples. For the purpose of approximating the potential health risks associated with long run exposure to heavy metals pollutants, target hazard quotients (THQ) and Hazard Index (HI) are used in this study. Results: Mean concentration of cadmium, lead and zinc in free­ ranged chicken liver are 0.38 ± 0.03,_ 0.076 ± 0.006, and 19.43 ± 0.10 mg/kg respectively. Meanwhile, mean concentration of cadmium, lead and zinc in farmed chicken liver are 0.43 ± 0.03, 0.227 ± 0.014, and 22.97 ± 1.39 mg/kg respectively. Conclusion: Farmed chicken livers showed significantly higher heavy metals concentrations compare to of free-ranged chickens. However, health risk assessment conducted showed that both Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and Health Index (HI) are lower than the value of 1, which means that there is no possible health risk and it is safe to consume chickens' livers from both groups

    GAMEL, TEUKU HAIRUL Pendidikan merupakan sebuah hal yang amat penting dan mendasar, teramat pentingnya dalam UUD 1945 pendidikan dimasukan ke dalam Hak Dasar. RSBI merupakan sebuah program pemerintah untuk meningkatkan mutu pendidikan di Indonesia dengan mengacu kepada standar internasional. Dalam prakteknya, timbul berbagai masalah di dalam penyelenggaraan RSBI, biaya yang mahal, sarana dan prasarana yang belum mencukupi adalah sebagian dari masalah RSBI. Keberadaan RSBI mulai dipertanyakan oleh masyarakat. Permohonan para pemohon untuk menghapuskan Pasal 50 ayat (3) UU Nomor 20 Tahun 2003 kepada MK dikabulkan. Putusan MK tersebut menimbulkan interpretasi berbeda antara MK dan Kemendikbud, MK menyatakan bahwa yang dibatalkan hanya RSBI Negeri, sedangkan Kemendikbud berpendapat bahwa keduanya baik RSBI Swasta maupun RSBI Negeri harus dibubarkan karena apabila hanya salah satu yang dibubarkan maka akan timbul dualisme sistem pendidikan. sehingga timbul suatu permasalahan Bagaimanakah status RSBI Swasta setelah penghapusan Pasal 50 ayat (3) UU Nomor 20 Tahun 2003 oleh Mahkamah Konstitusi? Metode penelitiannya adalah metode penelitian hukum normatif dengan didukung wawancara. Hasil Penelitian bahwa hakim MK membatalkan Pasal 50 ayat (3) karena bertentangan dengan Pembukaan UUD 1945 dan Pasal 50 ayat (3) UUD 1945, baik RSBI Negeri maupun Swasta harus dibubarkan karena keduanya tidak sesuai dengan Sistem Pendidikan Nasional itu sendiri. Kesimpulan dari permasalahan adalah Putusan MK adalah tepat untuk membatalkan Pasal 50 ayat (3) UU Nomor 20 Tahun 2003 sedangkan untuk Implementasinya, baik RSBI Negeri maupun Swasta harus dibubarkan. Saran, bagi Mahkamah Konstitusi agar berkonsentrasi untuk membuat Putusan saja sedangkan untuk implementasinya diserahkan kepada pihak yang lebih berhak

    This thesis presents the implementation of the Smart Aquarium that has the ability to sense and control the dregs of the water and automatic feeding. The system developed is an automatic system and design based on the Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) that acts as a controller. Certainly, this project consist of software and hardware development where knowledge in PIC programming, electronic and electrical devices are important to make the system operate. Controlling the dregs of the water is done by using dregs sensor connected to the aquarium and controlled by the PIC microcontroller. The Smart Aquarium also has the ability to change the water automatically when the dregs level in the aquarium is detected high. The amount of water in the aquarium is controlled by water level sensor, which placed in the aquarium. The water that added into the aquarium comes from a prefill reservoir located above the aquarium setup. The water is controlled by a solenoid valve which is turned on and off by the PIC microcontroller. The water that drained out of the tank goes into a drain reservoir, which is located below the aquarium setup. A water pump attached to the hose leading to the drain reservoir to generate the suction needed to extract the water from the tank. A servomotor controls the hole of automatic feeder either open or closed. The hole in the cylinder is designed such that only a specified amount of food is released per revolution. The feeding time is set by the user and controlled by the PIC microcontroller

    This thesis is about estimating the surface coverages (Г) of immobilised redox molecules at modified electrode surfaces using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique less sensitive than DPV technique because of the background current that can obscure the Faradaic current of the attached redox molecules. As a result, CV technique less sensitive for measurements of low surface concentrations of immobilised redox species. This is not the case for DPV. Currently, there is no specific agreed procedure to determine the surface coverages by DPV. Thus to establish the method to determine the surface coverages of immobilised redox molecules at the surface of the electrode by DPV measurement was a prime interest in this research. Secondary to that point, exploring a new strategy in preparing chemically modified electrodes in order to obtain a better surface coverages of covalently immobilised redox molecules at electrode surfaces was also an aim of this thesis.Enhanced DPV currents were obtained when an external resistance (Rext) of suitable magnitude was added in the DPV cell circuit for electrode modified with either for organic, DNA labelled or inorganic redox systems. This motivated us to develop an experimental model for estimating the DPV surface coverages (ГDPV, exp) of attached redox molecules at electrode surfaces at suitable Rext. Moreover, a simple equation for estimating the ΓDPV, exp based on DPV parameters is presented in this study and shown to work well, given several underlying assumptions. Our approach makes use of an additional Rext in the DPV cell circuit and several non-adjustable DPV parameters. Subsequently, the ΓDPV, exp of immobilised redox probes can be estimated by integrating the area under the oxidation peak of the differential pulse voltammograms (DPVs) at a suitable Rext. The experimental approach was verified by numerical modelling using a specially developed DPV simulation in MATLAB. The electrochemical parameters used for the DPV simulation, such as uncompensated solution resistance in an electrochemical cell (Ru), double layer capacitance (Cdl) and electrode kinetics (ks and α) were obtained from cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurementsviimade on the modified electrodes. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental DPV and the simulations.The second part of this thesis was focused on extracting thermodynamic and kinetic parameters such as the standard potential (E°), the diffusion coefficient (Do), surface coverages, the rate constant for adsorption (kA), the rate constant for homogenous reaction (kH), the rate of electron transfer (ks), and the transfer coefficient (α) for the electrochemical grafting of primary amine linkers onto GC electrode surfaces by numerical simulation. These parameters are impossible to access by experimental approaches. The grafting process was performed in two different solvents; by electrochemical grafting from neat ACN and by electrochemical grafting in a mixed solvent of ACN and sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3). In the case of the mixed-solution method, the ratio of ACN to NaHCO3 was 4:1. The primary amine of the EDA-Boc molecule was studied as an experimental model in this work. Using a specially developed CV simulation for inhibiting species at the surface of the electrode, the experimental CVs for the electrochemical grafting of EDA-Boc in the two solutions were simulated. Good agreement between experimental CV and the simulated CV was obtained. Moreover, this simulation allows us to extract the aforementioned parameters, which are not electrochemically accessible. To investigate the effect of the presence of NaHCO3 on immobilised EDA-Boc at the surface of GC electrodes, the anthraquinone (AQ) was covalently coupled to the grafted EDA (after removal of the Boc group). The CV and DPV surface coverages of covalently attached AQ on the EDA linker based on the two methods of electrografting were compared. The developed DPV simulation was also employed in this work in order to show the utility and flexibility. A good agreement between experimental and simulated DPV was achieved

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
