Yamandu Costa and the Evolving Brazilian Seven-String Guitar
© 2024 Maximillian Jonathan RuddDespite the widespread international acclaim and popularity of Brazilian seven-string guitarist and composer Yamandu Costa (b.1980), academic literature on his life and music is limited. This performance-led research project aims to address an identified gap in the literature on Yamandu Costa, with a focus on examining the instrumental techniques and musical styles that underpin his compositions and guitar playing. The outcomes of this research are presented in two main components: 1) a folio of musical performances in the form of audio recordings constituting 75% of the PhD; 2) a written dissertation constituting 25% of the PhD. The broad range of repertoire contained within the folio is presented in six programs that reflect the rich diversity of the evolving Brazilian seven-string guitar repertoire. The inclusion of these works elucidates the musical contexts from which Yamandu Costa takes inspiration and features new arrangements and compositions for the seven-string guitar. The folio is supported by a dissertation that focuses on the chamame in relation to Yamandu Costa. The chamame is a music style of Argentinian origin, however it proliferates in the border regions that also comprise southern Brazil and Uruguay. The broader term associated with these regional music styles in southern Brazil is musica gaucha (gaucho music). Hailing from southern Brazil, Yamandu Costa is highly influenced by these musical styles. Central to this thesis is the collaboration between its author and Yamandu Costa. This partnership resulted in a duet recording of Argentinian guitarist Lucio Yanel’s (b.1946) Flor y Truco. A musical transcription of this duet recording becomes a focus of discussion in the dissertation, which highlights Yamandu Costa’s approach to creating an improvised chamame accompaniment. The dissertation also examines the chamames of Yamandu Costa and others through musical analyses of selected works. These works have been selected for their significance in demonstrating the influences, musical language and instrumental techniques that have come to represent the guitar playing and compositions of Yamandu Costa and the violao gaucho (gaucho guitar) more broadly. The dissertation also explores the ways in which the resulting chamame guitar techniques and understandings can be applied to new creative outcomes. One such outcome is my arrangement of Mauricio Carrilho’s (b.1960) Suite para Violao de Sete Cordas e Orquestra for guitar duo, in which ideas for arranging large-scale orchestral works for guitar duo are also explored
Residential PV Adoption: Exploration on Communication Channels' Influence through Consumers' Psychological Decision Making
This thesis researches the influence of various communication channels, considering the psychological aspect of consumers, to the adoption process of residential PV system, using agent-based modeling case study in the Netherlands. Agent-based model is used to explore how PV adoption dynamic behavior emerges as the result of information transfer between individuals on a new technology. Diffusion of innovation theory is used as the basic framework on how the usage of new technology can spread and theory of planned behavior is utilized to get better understanding on consumer's psychological decision making process. Further discussion with a representative of power utility and interviews with 2 PV installers are done to obtain more knowledge on the system. The study shows that mass media has important role in spreading information to speed-up the adoption, more importantly in providing initial knowledge to households that have not had interest on PV yet. The role of information is further shown as there is indication that households' interest tend to increase with more knowledge available on the internet, and at the same time, leads to the increase of adoption rate. A crucial role of communication channel is to draw PV installer together with potential adopter. Finally, the adoption rate is strongly slowed down by household's basic reluctance on new technology and lower income level.<br/
Macromolecular Engineering: From Precise Macromolecular Inks to 3D Printed Microstructures [data]
Macromolecules with complex, defined structures exist in nature but rarely is this degree of control afforded in synthetic macromolecules. Sequence-defined approaches provide a solution for precise control of the primary macromolecular structure. Despite a growing interest, very few examples for applications of sequence-defined macromolecules exist. In particular, the use of sequence-defined macromolecules as printable materials remains unexplored. Herein, the rational design of precise macromolecular inks for 3D microprinting is investigated for the first time. Specifically, three printable oligomers are synthesized, consisting of eight units, either crosslinkable (C) or non-functional (B) with varied sequence (BCBCBCBC, alternating; BBCCCBB, triblock; and BBBBCCCC, block). The oligomers are printed using two-photon laser printing and characterized. It is clearly demonstrated that the macromolecular sequence, specifically the positioning of the crosslinkable group, plays a critical role in both the printability and final properties of the printed material. Thus, through precise design and printability of sequence-defined macromolecules, an exciting avenue for the next generation of functional materials for 3D printing is created
Organized Crime, The Mafia, White Collar Crime and Corruption
the author explores the relationship between the mafia, white collar crime, and corruption, especially in Italy,to show a clear comprehension of the difference between an organized crime structure and a maffia organization
Aero-structural Design of Composite Wings for Airborne Wind Energy Applications
In this work we explore the initial design space for composite kites, focusing on the configuration of the bridle line system and its effect on the aeroelastic behaviour of the wing. The computational model utilises a 2D cross sectional model in conjunction with a 1D beam model (2+1D structural model) that captures the complex composite coupling effects exhibited by slender, multi-layered composite structures, while still being computationally efficient for the use at the initial iterative design stage. This structural model is coupled with a non-linear vortex lattice method (VLM) to determine the aerodynamic loading on the wing. In conjunction with the aerodynamic model, a bridle model is utilised to determine the force transfer path between the wing and the bridles connected with the tethers leading to the ground station. The structural model is coupled to the aerodynamic and bridle models in order to obtain the equilibrium aero-structural-bridle state of the kite. This computational model is utilised to perform a design space exploration to assess the effects of varied load introduction to the structure and resulting effects on the kite.Wind Energ
German Librarianship and Munich Libraries
There are 27 municipal libraries including the Central Public Library in Munich. The other important libraries in the city are Bayern State National Library, Maximillian University Library, a technical highschool library and the "Deutsches Musuem" Library. All these libraries are financed locally. The author introduces these libraries briefly and compares German libraries with Turkish libraries. He concludes that although theoretically there are not distinctive differences, in practice, buildings and their layout are better in Germany where more variety of services are offered. In Turkey standardization has not been realized yet. Turkey needs to computerize and network to improve the services offered in an efficient way

Reference and repetition in Jeanette Winterson's novels
Jeanette Winterson’s infamous use of intertextuality and self-quotation, often dismissed
as arrogance, compels her readers to locate her works within an interconnected cycle. This thesis
argues that Winterson’s reference and repetition are evidence of a poststructuralist project: she
reconceives the unities of autobiography, history, and identity as networks of relations.
Foucauldian archaeology, the study of discourse as a system of references rather than a thematic
unity, provides an appropriate toolkit in studying Winterson’s discursive method. Her memoir
Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? returns to many of the same events of her semi-autobiographical
novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, suggesting that any attempt at writing
the authoritative version of one’s life story is always partial or fractured. Much the same, the
fantastic elements and self-deprecating narrators within her historical novels The Passion and
Sexing the Cherry imply authoritative or historical facts are as fictions, open to the surreal or
contradictory and accessed through the personal. Last, in Written on the Body, Winterson
encourages her reader to interpret the narrator’s gender from textual clues, just as the reader of
Weight confronts biographical parallels between author and character; in both cases, identity is a
narrative, open to play and revision
