The subordination of women in society has become a common phenomenon. The woman's life in traditional Chinese culture is portrayed as someone who must be obedient, submissive, polite, have manners, and be loyal to her husband and others. The Good Earth novel reflects the life of traditional Chinese women in patriarchal power and the role of female characters. This study aims to describe the Chinese community traditions that govern women's lives in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and elucidate the orthodox tradition's effect on the role of female characters. The method applied was Library Research through the Sociological and Psychological Approaches. The data were obtained from The Good Earth novel and secondary data, such as the library, books, critics, writer’s biography, and a novel summary. The research revealed that women had a low position in social status in ancient China. We are familiar with the name of the patriarchy set by Confucius, as illustrated by figure O-lan, Wang Lung's wife as a female character in the novel and character theories, and his contribution will be used as the basis for analysis. The research summarizes that the teachings of the Confucian Philosophy of Culture influence patriarchal power

The Analysis of Subject-Verb Agreement Errors on Students’ Writing Descriptive Text

Subject-verb agreement is a language system that is learned by students who study English, yet some students like the eighth graders of MTs Sunan Kalijaga still make errors in applying this rule in their writing. This study is aimed to find out the subject-verb agreement errors on students’ writing descriptive text in the eighth grade in MTs Sunan Kalijaga Larangan Luar Larangan Pamekasan and to know the factors which cause their errors. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative approach with content analysis and descriptive design. The data was obtained by observing the descriptive texts written by the eighth graders. Then, discussing and analyzing the subject-verb agreement within the writing. After knowing the errors, some students and the teacher were interviewed to know the factors which cause such errors. Documentations were also used to legitimize the data. From 25 texts which were collected by the researcher, there are 92 omission errors in subject-verb agreement, 22 addition errors, 44 misformation errors, and 3 misordering errors. Additionally, those kinds of errors are caused by two main factors, namely word for word translation and the lack of grammar. Those factors relate to interlingual and intralingual factors. In brief, there are still many errors of subject-verb agreement among the students’ writing of descriptive text in the eighth grade in MTs Sunan Kalijag

Development and analysis of a three-dimensional braided honeycomb structure

    No full text
This paper presents the design and development of three-dimensional braided honeycomb structures. The basic principles and braiding process are described. The relationship between braiding parameters and honeycomb geometric parameters is established and several three-dimensional (3D) braided honeycomb fabrics are introduced. Based on the principle of the 3D braiding ‘four-step’ method, the interlaced state of yarns can be changed by controlling the movement of yarn carriers, so the separation and combination of the braid can be controlled, then 3D braided honeycomb fabric can be formed. As the number of braiding cycles of wall length increases, the relative density will gradually decrease, but the number of braiding cycles of free wall length has a greater effect on the relative density. When the number of columns of yarns participating in wall thickness increases, the relative density will gradually increase. The relative density also showed a positive correlation with the braiding angle. With the increase of the opening angle, the relative density gradually decreases, although there is a minimum point after which a little increase is observed. This paper provides significant guidance for designing various 3D braided honeycomb structures and evaluating their relative density, and can be a reference for the design and development of new honeycombs structures.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Bio-based Structures & MaterialsStructural Integrity & Composite

Project (M.Sc.)-- American University of Beirut. Hariri School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, 2013. W 4First Reader : Dr. Huda Abu-Saad Huijer, RN, PhD, FEANS, FAAN, Professor, Director, Hariri School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine ; Second Reader : Dr. Hala Drawish, RN, PhD, Hariri School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 42-45)Major improvements in treatment modalities and supportive care have led to significant improvements in survival rates for most types of childhood cancer. However, cancer and its treatment cause considerable symptom burden on the patient, ranging from physical symptoms to significant psychological, social, and spiritual concerns. Having a child diagnosed with cancer, has emotional, physical, financial, and spiritual impacts on the whole family as well. This project is based on data collected in the original study by Abu-Saad Huijer et al. (2013) focusing on the quality of palliative care, spirituality, and relationships among children with cancer, as reported by children and parents, and the financial hardship as reported by parents only.Between 2010 and 2011, a non-probability convenience sample of 85 children and adolescents between the ages of 7 to 18 years, who were receiving their treatments either at the inpatient or outpatient facilities of the Children Cancer Centre of Lebanon, were enrolled in the study. A total of 85 parents or significant others directly involved in the care of these children were also included. The Needs at End of Life Screening Tool (NEST) questionnaire was used in this study to evaluate the quality of palliative care provided to the patients.Parents, adolescents, and children reported high quality of medical care. Patients reported least satisfaction with participation in decision making, while parents reported least satisfaction in securing a hospital bed. All participants reported almost high spirituality levels. Parents reported not preparing those around them for the possibility of the child’s death, and considered that children spend good time with people more than adolescents do. The study has shown that parents suffer from a moderate financial hardship during their child’s illness and difficulties in getting insurance plans to cover their child’s treatment

The Comparison between Right Hemisphere Dominance Students and Left One in Multiple Choice of English Test at the First Grade MAN 2 of Pamekasan

The brain is divided into two nearly symmetrical halves, the right, and the left hemisphere. Left hemisphere handles all of analytical, logical matters, and language skill. On the contrary, art objects such as music, imagination, and colors handled by the right one. This research investigated whether there is a significant difference between right hemisphere dominance students and left one in multiple choice of English test. The researcher used ex-post facto research. The population is 294 of first-grade students. The simple random sampling technique used to select 40 students (20 right hemisphere dominance students and 20 left one). In gaining the data, three instruments have been used namely questionnaire, test, and documentation. The data were analyzed using independent t-test. The result revealed that there is a significant difference between right hemisphere dominance students and left one at the first grade MAN 2 of Pamekasan in multiple choice of English test (2.16 > 2.03; Significance level 5%, df = 35). Left brain dominance students are better in multiple choice of English test because language skill is placed on the left hemisphere. It also notified that differ hemisphere dominance students give different effect to the students’ achievement in English testing, especially multiple-choice test

Preloading for reduction of compressibility characteristics of sabkha soil profiles

    No full text
Sabkha soils are coastal and inland salt flat deposits of arid climates, which invariably contain an appreciable amount of organic materials. They are, therefore, characterized by being highly compressible with a significant part of the settlement taking place as secondary compressions. In this study, the applicability of a preloading technique in improving the compressibility characteristics of sabkha sediments was investigated through construction of an instrumented test embankment on a typical sabkha formation from the southwest coast of Saudi Arabia. Settlement and pore pressure measurements were taken for an observation period lasting 1 year. Compressibility parameters were determined in the laboratory from extensive standard and long-term consolidation tests on undisturbed samples taken from the site before and after the preloading process. The laboratory test results substantiated by the relatively large settlements measured under the test embankment indicate that the precompression method is an effective technique that can eliminate the primary consolidation settlements and reduce the secondary compressions of sabkha sediments. The field behavior was predicted utilizing the conventional theory of consolidation and the finite element method. Using laboratory-determined compressibility parameters, the one-dimensional theory of consolidation highly overestimated the measured settlements and significantly underestimated the observed settlement-time behavior. However, close agreement between observed and predicted behavior was obtained when field parameters were used in the analyses. Although substantially overestimating the time required for completion of primary settlements, the finite element predictions of the magnitude and the rate of settlements are considered satisfactory.Corresponding Author: Prof. Mosleh A.
