Looking East Looking West: Organic and Quality Food Marketing in Asia and Europe
This book represents a unique collection of European and Asian perspectives on the production, trade and consumption of high quality food. The rapidly growing demand for organic and quality food in Europe imposes new challenges on competing food value chains. Europe, as the biggest worldwide food importer, attracts many developing and developed countries in Asia. Prospering Chinese and Thai food markets offer new opportunities for European operators. Wealthy and informed consumers on both continents search for trustworthy high quality food products. Farmers, operators and retailers from distant cultures are coping with different standards, facing the ever increasing necessity for mutual understanding. This publication is the output of Bean-Quorum an European funded Asia-Link project. Bean-Quorum represents a consolidated network of researchers working together with the business sector and NGOs to enhance European Asian understanding about organic and quality food. This book describes global trends in organic and quality food trade and connects them with recent developments in Asian and European market structures. Selected case studies illustrate the impact of organic and quality food production on topics ranging from sustainable rural development, to the potential of exotic new plant varieties to purchase decisions of European or Asian retail managers. Selected European markets are mirrored by the situation in Chinese and Thai markets. Finally, environmental issues concerning global trade of quality food are addressed
Consumer Attitudes, Knowledge, and Behavior in the Russian Market for Organic Food
In the past few decades, the market for organic food has developed well in Western European countries and comparable markets like the United States or Canada. While these markets are now approaching market saturation, other markets still have huge potential for growth and are therefore of special interest to export companies. In this paper, we analyze the demands, knowledge, and expectations of the emerging market in Russia. It is well documented that the Russian market for organic food has had a much higher growth rate than Western markets in recent years. According to the USDA, the Russian market grew significantly during the last years. The increase might also be due to changes in Russian consumers’ behavior. However, some challenges must be considered when entering the Russian market with premium products: (1) a large number of low‐income consumers are not able topay for premium products, and (2) up until now, there have been no official organic labels available in Russia, and, therefore, it is likely that the Russian population lacks knowledge of what organic food is and which requirements are connected to the organic production process. Considering these restrictions, we analyzed important factors affecting Russian consumers’ food choice on the one hand and their knowledge of organic food on the other. This paper presents results for one specific product (organic potatoes), which can be considered to be a typical alternative to low‐priced, conventional products. A conjoint analysis was conducted in Saint Petersburg (n = 300) to investigate the importance of the buying attributes of organic potatoes. While the results are not representative of the whole Russian market, they show crucial differences in consumer attitudes compared to Western markets and confirm that the average consumer knowledge about this product category remains low. These findings offer valuable information to those stakeholders of the supply chain who want to enter a market with high growth rates but obvious shortcomings
Sequencing, annotation, and comparative genome analysis of the gerbil-adapted Helicobacter pylori strain B8
Farnbacher M, Jahns T, Willrodt D, et al. Sequencing, annotation, and comparative genome analysis of the gerbil-adapted Helicobacter pylori strain B8. BMC Genomics. 2010;11(1): 335.Background: The Mongolian gerbils are a good model to mimic the Helicobacter pylori-associated pathogenesis of the human stomach. In the current study the gerbil-adapted strain B8 was completely sequenced, annotated and compared to previous genomes, including the 73 supercontigs of the parental strain B128. Results: The complete genome of H. pylori B8 was manually curated gene by gene, to assign as much function as possible. It consists of a circular chromosome of 1,673,997 bp and of a small plasmid of 6,032 bp carrying nine putative genes. The chromosome contains 1,711 coding sequences, 293 of which are strain-specific, coding mainly for hypothetical proteins, and a large plasticity zone containing a putative type-IV-secretion system and coding sequences with unknown function. The cag-pathogenicity island is rearranged such that the cagA-gene is located 13,730 bp downstream of the inverted gene cluster cagB-cag1. Directly adjacent to the cagA-gene, there are four hypothetical genes and one variable gene with a different codon usage compared to the rest of the H. pylori B8-genome. This indicates that these coding sequences might be acquired via horizontal gene transfer. The genome comparison of strain B8 to its parental strain B128 delivers 425 unique B8-proteins. Due to the fact that strain B128 was not fully sequenced and only automatically annotated, only 12 of these proteins are definitive singletons that might have been acquired during the gerbil-adaptation process of strain B128. Conclusion Our sequence data and its analysis provide new insight into the high genetic diversity of H. pylori-strains. We have shown that the gerbil-adapted strain B8 has the potential to build, possibly by a high rate of mutation and recombination, a dynamic pool of genetic variants (e.g. fragmented genes and repetitive regions) required for the adaptation-processes. We hypothesize that these variants are essential for the colonization and persistence of strain B8 in the gerbil stomach during inflammation
Are standard values the best choice? A critical statement on rheological soil fluid properties viscosity and surface tension
The rheological properties of a fluid in terms of viscosity eta and surface tension gamma are often neglected in studies on hydrostatic and hydrodynamic phenomena. However, their measurement seems to provide us with more benefit than it takes time and effort. Especially regarding transport of fluids in soil, the exact definition of the fluid properties is necessary for predicting water transport correctly. In this paper we review and summarize the available scientific knowledge on rheological soil fluid properties and supplement it with our own investigations on viscosity and surface tension of salt and soil solutions. Our results showed neither a clear linear relationship between eta and salt concentration in aqueous solutions nor to the kind of cation or anion of the dissolved salt whereas the surface tension of salt solutions generally increased linearly with molar concentration though at different rates. As an example, a 1 M MgSO4 solution doubled eta but increased gamma only by 3%, whereas 1 M MgCl2 caused 4% increase in gamma, but still 50% increase in eta. Viscosity of soil solutions depended on soil-water ratio as well as fertilization of the soil. The largest deviation to standard eta of water was about 6% at 40% gravimetric water content. Concluding from the literature review and our own findings, we recommend to additionally measure rheology (namely viscosity and surface tension) of the soil solution in order to improve modeling of hydrostatic and hydrodynamic phenomena in soils by utilizing more realistic fluid properties which might deviate significantly from the usually employed standard values. The mathematical error cumulates with increasing salt concentration as a deviation of 10% to the standard value also causes an error of 10% in linear relationships derived from that parameter, e.g. the equation of Hagen-Poiseuille. Future investigations should focus on the manifold single effects as well as on the interactions of different dissolved components in the soil solution on viscosity and surface tension and how these are influenced by temperature, pressure (i.e. shear rate) and concentration.
