An additional set of three songs is attributed to the unnamed author of "Will you love me then as now," surmised to be Charles William Glover, though only "The rich man's bride" verifies as one of his works. For topics covered, two works are concerned with the month of May, and three others with Ireland (one of which, "The May Dew," overlaps in both areas)

Richardson, Barbauld, and the construction of an early modern fan club
No full textMPhilMuch has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him.
This thesis offers an alternative reading of how the Richardson manuscripts are viewed, redefining them as not simply a collection of letters, but as a collective entity, deliberately selected and archived as evidence of an early modern fan club, and its celebrity managing director

Intertekstualiteit en die Bose in <i>Kroniek van Perdepoort</i> (Anna M. Louw)
Get PDFIn Anna M. Louw’s novel Kroniek van Perdepoort the primal conflict between good and evil is an important constituent element. Well-known authors in world literature have been fascinated by this problem, and it is an enriching experience to bring together allusions and to investigate points of contact with authors such as Feodor Dostoyevsky, Thomas Mann. William Faulkner and Patrick White. In Kroniek van Perdepoort there is a meeting between Klaas Kamer and the devil. Similarities between this meeting and similar meetings in Dr Faustus (Thomas Mann) and The Brothers Karamazov (Dostoyevsky) are pointed out.
Subsequently the portrayal of sin in Kroniek van Perdepoort is compared with Faulkner’s novels The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom!, in which a similar theme is represented.
Patrick White is also an author of religious literature to whom Anna M. Louw is attracted by her own admission. His novels. The solid Mandala and Riders in the Chariot are studied, and similarities with Kroniek van Perdepoort indicated

Trepat. La seva aportació conjunta es va limitar a un únic autor, Ovidi, del qual van publicar les Heroides en 1927 i Les metamorfosis en tres volums entre 1930 i 1932. De la mà de Joaquim Balcells i de Carles Riba van establir el text llatí i van girar l'autor més erudit de l'antiguitat llatina. Una anàlisi de les correccions i de les reformulacions de Riba ens descobreix els criteris fabrians que aplicà el corrector i la important aportació de les traduccions al sistema literari català i a la fixació de la llengua.In the whole of its earlier period, from 1923 to the end of the Spanish Civil War, the Bernat Metge Foundation had only two female collaborators: the Latinists Anna M. de Saavedra and Adela M. Trepat. Their joint contribution was restricted to one author, Ovid, of whom they published the Heroides in 1927 and the Metamorphoses, in 3 volums, between 1930 and 1932. With the assistance of Joaquim Balcells and Carles Riba they established the Latin text and translated this most erudite of Latin authors. An analysis of Riba's emendations and alternative solutions reveals the Fabrian linguistic criteria he applied and the significant contribution translations made to the creation of modern literary Catalan

This article focuses on two non-fiction works by Native American author N. Scott Momaday: his 1969 historical memoir The Way to Rainy Mountain and his essay collection The Man Made of Words It specifically tackles performative conceptions of language in the Kiowa storytelling tradition, where words are experienced as speech acts that have the power to intervene in surrounding realities. Taking into account 20th century ethno-cultural and linguistic policies in the United States, the article also reflects on the role indigenous languages may play in contemporary Native American Literature, which has most often been written in English.Author/s
