Sweeping has no effect on renormalized turbulent viscosity
We perform renormalization group analysis (RG) of the Navier-Stokes equation in the presence of constant mean velocity field , and show that the renormalized viscosity is unaffected by , thus negating the ``sweeping effect", proposed by Kraichnan [Phys. Fluids {\bf 7}, 1723 (1964)] using random Galilean invariance. Using direct numerical simulation, we show that the correlation functions for and differ from each other, but the renormalized viscosity for the two cases are the same. Our numerical results are consistent with the RG calculations
Organised crime and public sector corruption
Foreword: In 2006, the Australian Government introduced the Anti-money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth) which increased regulatory controls over businesses potentially able to facilitate organised criminal activities such as money laundering. The implementation of tougher legislation and associated law enforcement interventions may result in criminal organisations adjusting their tactics in order to continue their activities without detection. In this paper, the risk and potential impact of tactical displacement by organised criminals is discussed with regard to the potential for increased attempts by organised crime groups to corrupt public servants. There is a paucity of research exploring the nature and extent of public sector corruption committed by organised crime groups. This discussion is informed by literature on ‘crime scripts’ originally developed by Cornish (1994) and the 5I’s crime prevention framework developed by Ekblom (2011). Making use of public-source information about the commission of such crimes, as exemplified in two recent corruption cases, some intervention strategies are proposed that may be effective in reducing the risks of corruption of public sector officials by organised crime groups in Australia
Effect of clopidogrel added to aspirin in patients with atrial fibrillation.
BACKGROUND: Vitamin K antagonists reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation but are considered unsuitable in many patients, who usually receive aspirin instead. We investigated the hypothesis that the addition of clopidogrel to aspirin would reduce the risk of vascular events in patients with atrial fibrillation. METHODS: A total of 7554 patients with atrial fibrillation who had an increased risk of stroke and for whom vitamin K-antagonist therapy was unsuitable were randomly assigned to receive clopidogrel (75 mg) or placebo, once daily, in addition to aspirin. The primary outcome was the composite of stroke, myocardial infarction, non-central nervous system systemic embolism, or death from vascular causes. RESULTS: At a median of 3.6 years of follow-up, major vascular events had occurred in 832 patients receiving clopidogrel (6.8% per year) and in 924 patients receiving placebo (7.6% per year) (relative risk with clopidogrel, 0.89; 95% confidence interval [CI
Risks and Benefits of Oral Anticoagulation Compared With Clopidogrel Plus Aspirin in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation According to Stroke Risk. The Atrial Fibrillation Clopidogrel Trial With Irbesartan for Prevention of Vascular Events (ACTIVE-W)
Background and Purpose—In ACTIVE-W, oral anticoagulation (OAC) was more efficacious than combined clopidogrel
plus aspirin (CA) in preventing vascular events in patients with atrial fibrillation. However, because OAC carries
important bleeding complications, risk stratification schemes have been devised to identify patients for whom the
absolute benefits of OAC exceed its risks.
Methods—Participants were risk-stratified with the widely-used CHADS2 scheme. Treatment-specific rates of stroke and
major bleeding were calculated for patients with a CHADS21 and compared to those with a CHADS21.
Results—Observed stroke rates for those with a CHADS21 were 1.25% per year on CA and 0.43% per year on OAC
(RR2.96, 95% CI: 1.26 to 6.98, P0.01). Among patients with a CHADS21, the stroke rates were 3.15% per year
on CA and 2.01% per year on OAC (RR1.58, 95% CI: 1.11 to 2.24, P0.01) (P for interaction between stroke risk
category and efficacy of OAC0.19). The risk of major bleeding during OAC was significantly lower among patients
with CHADS21 (1.36% per year) compared with CHADS21 (2.75% per year) (RR0.49, 95% CI 0.30 to 0.79,
P0.003).
Conclusions—In this clinical trial, patients with a CHADS21 had a low risk of stroke, yet still derived a modest (1%
per year) but statistically significant absolute reduction in stroke with OAC and had low rates of major hemorrhage on
OAC
Net clinical benefit of adding clopidogrel to aspirin therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation for whom vitamin K antagonists are unsuitable
Resilience Framework for Families (Italian version):Translation of the Resilience Framework (Hart , Blincow and Thomas 2007).
What is the Resilience Framework? The Resilience Framework is based on Resilient Therapy (RT), the name we’ve given to the set of ideas and practices originally developed by Angie Hart and Derek Blincow, with help from Helen Thomas as part of a book. We took the resilience research evidence base and put it together with other sets of ideas gleaned from our practice with very disadvantaged children and families in an NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Clinic. This Italian translation, as well as the back translation process to check the accuracy of the translation, have been peer-reviewed by bilingual experts and by the authors of the original framework
BONDING AND DYNAMICS OF CNRg AND CRg COMPLEXES
Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322The van der Waals complexes of CN and C with rare gas atoms (Rg) are of interest from the perspectives of their bonding characteristics and predissociation dynamics. Matrix isolation data indicate that that the bonding ranges from a weak van der Waals interaction for the Ne complexes to incipient chemical bonding for Xe. The low-lying vibronic states of CN and C are interleaved, which facilitates electronic energy transfer. Consequently, electronic predissociation of CNRg and CRg complexes provides a useful means to examine the detailed dynamics of electronic energy transfer. Predissociation processes for CNRg complexes have been characterized using double resonance techniques. The final state distributions exhibit symmetry preferences that yield insights concerning the topologies of the relevant potential energy surfaces. In addition, bond energies can be deduced from the predissociation dynamics. Data for the binary complexes CNRg (Rg=Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) and CRg will be presented, along with theoretical analyses based on potential energy surfaces
