Spatial Citizenship. Understanding the challenges and redefinitions of contemporary social cohesion through the analysis of the geographies of post-migrant contentious politics
Contains fulltext :
325290.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access)This work explores the evolving dynamics of spatial belonging focusing on
the experiences of racialized activists in Europe. Amid increased global
mobility and the digital reshaping of space, many racialised individuals
(with or without migratory backgrounds) face both formal exclusion (e.g.,
lack of citizenship) and informal exclusion (e.g., racialized marginalization
despite legal status). The research investigates how such exclusions
manifest through socio-spatial practices within two umbrella
organizations: CoNNGI in Italy and ndo in Germany, and their local
affiliates, NGI and EOTO. Employing a comparative and spatially-informed
approach rooted in Henri Lefebvre’s concept of the spatial triad of
perceived, conceived, and lived space, the work analyzes how these
organizations claim, negotiate, and transform spaces at both local and
national levels. The study contributes to four academic fields:
post-migration studies, social movement studies, geography, and
citizenship studies. It also proposes a methodological tool for examining
intra-movement socio-spatial conflicts, bridging collective and individual
experiences with spatial settings. Ultimately, the research argues that the
struggle for recognition and belonging among racialized communities
reshapes not only their own positionalities but also redefines the
normative assumptions of broader democratic processes, revealing the
socio-spatial foundations of redistributive justice and social cohesion in
contemporary Italy and Germany.Radboud University, 24 november 2025Promotores : Ernste, H., Mattoni, A.240 p
The binational city Eurode. The social legitimacy of a border-crossing town
Contains fulltext :
30926_binacieu.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)The integration in border regions and towns is often considered to be a test-case in European integration. Although the social and democratic legitimacy of the European Union is a much discussed topic, the aspect of how legitimate such cross-border regional and local constructs are, has received far less scientific attention. This dissertation aims to give a first onset for quantitative investigations regarding the social legitimacy of local cross-border cooperation. It describes a project conducted in two neighbouring municipalities, Kerkrade and Herzogenrath, both situated on the Dutch-German border. The project's goal was to become a single border-crossing municipality which was to be called Eurode. The study consists of an analysis of the measures taken by the local authorities of both towns to construct Eurode and to strengthen its public support. In addition, the results of a survey will be presented, which show the actual support lent by the inhabitants of both towns. This detailed focus, on both the construction and the reconstruction of a border-crossing municipality, adds a new dimension to the current research on neighbouring border towns. Furthermore, the results of the survey do not only give evidence of the public support for Eurode today, but it also provides a perspective for future prospectsRU Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, 26 november 2007Promotor : Ernste, H.
