Development of the hub port of Colombo, Sri Lanka

    No full text
The Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, is an important hub port in the Indian Ocean. A hub port is a port with mainly transhipment (and in this case container) throughput, which means that most of the cargo is not for the country itself, but for countries in the region. The yearly container throughput at the Port of Colombo reached its full capacity of 1.7 million TEU per year in 1997. Increasing waiting times for ships calling at the port are a result of this. Because of the costs of a waiting ship, shipping lines will choose other ports in the region such as Singapore, Salalah (Oman) or Dubai (United Arab Emirates) for their ships to go to. The aim of this study is to develop a plan for a New Container Terminal, which will give the Port of Colombo enough container throughput capacity for the next 25 years: till the year 2025.Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

Orbit design for future SpaceChip swarm missions in a planetary atmosphere

    No full text
The effect of solar radiation pressure and atmospheric drag on the orbital dynamics of satellites-on-a-chip (SpaceChips) is exploited to design equatorial long-lived orbits about the oblate Earth. The orbit energy gain due to asymmetric solar radiation pressure, considering the Earth's shadow, is used to balance the energy loss due to atmospheric drag. Future missions for a swarm of SpaceChips are proposed, where a number of small devices are released from a conventional spacecraft to perform spatially distributed measurements of the conditions in the ionosphere and exosphere. It is shown that the orbit lifetime can be extended and indeed selected through solar radiation pressure and the end-of-life re-entry of the swarm can be ensured, by exploiting atmospheric drag

This thesis deals with the social representations of the subjects involved in the use and the management of the water on Karst Aquifer in the City of Colombo (PR), since the beginning of its use, in 1995, until the current days. The exploration of this aquifer, that in its beginning it was about an institutional solution for the problem of the water lack in the urban area of Colombo, became the partner-ambient scene of conflicts and impacts. It was used in this thesis the model of analysis of the social representations and the patrimonial management of the natural resources. One analyzed the common factors of the conflict and of the use of the water on three categories of involved citizens in the use and management of Karst Aquifer water: Farmers, Technicians of Sanepar Company and Public Agencies. The research indicated that the conflict expressed, on the one side, by the farmers claiming that the irrational exploitation of Karst Aquifer interfered directly on the availability of water from them for irrigation agriculture. The other side, by Sanepar claiming the impossibility of stops the capture of this Aquifer in line to be the only viable solution to meet the demand for water in Colombo City. The results of analysis of social representations of the subjects involved, as much on the conflict as in relation to the meanings of the use of the water, pointed a linkage between the representations of the subjects with the social role that they develop. In the category of farmers, the results showed that the water represents both maintenance of the physical survival as of the familiar economic income of the citizens, being the motivating factor of the conflict. In the category of Technicians of Sanepar Company, the results linked with one of the missions of the company, the supply public. And in the Public Agencies, the results related with the social mission that they represent, as the management, supervision, licensing and environmental mediation of social conflicts and environmental
