Cross-Cultural Human Relationships in Sunetra Gupta’s So Good in Black
Get PDFSunetra Gupta who is an Indian immigrant living in England and working in Oxford University as a Professor of Zoology has written five novels. Her fifth novel, So Good in Black published in 2011 celebrates globalization and the free passage to western countries for Indians and for the westerners to India. Human relationship is the main crux of postmodern writings and Gupta also brings out the cross-cultural human relationship in So Good in Black with much details. At the backdrop of Kolkata, India, Gupta colourfully draws the human relationship especially man-woman relationship in this novel. As the values of life are at stake due to the materialistic advancement in the modern world, Gupta highlights the fact that human relationship always lies in dark and it is good to keep it in black. The characters namely Byron Mallick, Max Gate, Damini and Ela suffer as they from relationship with themselves and with others who are their kith and kin. The women characters namely, Damini, Ela and Barbara become victims in the hands of Byron and Max, as they try to form relationship among them. The cultural values of India and the West is comparatively discussed by the author in this novel to bring out the very nature of Indian woman like Ela who gives importance to Indian culture and prefers it though she experiences cross-cultural human relationship.

Get PDFOn March 11, 2020, when the World Health Organisation declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic, most countries in South Asia had already seen their first cases of the newly identified severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by the coronavirus and were all heading towards the first wave, starting early April and peaking late September 2020. The implications of the pandemic have been far-reaching and affected people and countries differently. The effects of the pandemic, combined with ongoing, multiple crises have thus had a devastating impact on education systems in many parts of South Asia. Longstanding debates on formal and informal education have pointed to a need to acknowledge the multiple ways in which individuals learn skills, knowledge, and insights from exposure and experiences outside the formal settings. There is very little literature on the similarity between challenges faced by South Asian nations during the pandemic, and this collection hopes to fill that void

Abstract
The paper explores how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the fields of finance and accounting, concentrating on ChatGPT-related technologies. Within the financial industry, operations, decision-making, and risk management have all undergone radical change as a result of the incorporation of generative AI. From investor relations and risk reduction to finance operations and reporting, this exploration covers a wide range of applications. The adoption of generative AI, as proven by ChatGPT, has already shown notable improvements in operational effectiveness by automating repetitive operations like financial analysis, data entry, and reconciliation. With its ability to comprehend natural language, the technology has been crucial in improving customer engagement by providing user-friendly interactions and real-time query resolution. To add on, generative AI models enhance the general robustness and security of financial systems by being essential in fraud detection, risk management, and customized financial advising. This research also emphasizes how crucial it is to address ethical issues when generative AI is implemented in the financial sector, even with recent advancements. Responsible and transparent use of generative AI technology requires careful management of ethical issues, such as data privacy, algorithmic biases, and legal compliance. The study also shows how generative AI assistants will work as the next generation of finance copilots, assisting with scenario planning, financial forecasting, and complete business intelligence while blending effortlessly into finance processes. It is expected that the cooperative relationship between generative AI and traditional AI forecasting tools will develop further, offering integrated use cases that facilitate better decision support for financial experts. Finally, the article highlights that to fully realize the revolutionary potential of generative AI in Accounting and Finance, ongoing investment in skill development, cross-functional collaboration, and ethical governance are needed. Para tanto, foram selecionados textos referentes às últimas cinco décadas, os quais foram analisados em ordem cronológica. Estes textos foram escolhidos de forma intencional, levando-se em consideração principalmente a abrangência e a importância nacional e internacional (fazer parte de um evento internacional ligado a um organismo internacional, por exemplo). A partir da leitura destes fez-se a análise, partindo-se do pressuposto que a epistemologia da Administração Universitária converge com a epistemologia da Administração, podendo ser considerada inclusive um sub-campo desta. Conclui-se que se faz necessário um repensar crítico das teorias administrativas que dê conta de toda complexidade inerente a todas as organizações, incluindo aí as universidades
Contribuições a análise e modelagem de operações transientes de colunas de destilação

De posse de um modelo dinâmico é possível determinar e avaliar o comportamento de determinadas variáveis de interesse. O modelo disponibiliza tanto variáveis internas do processo, que dificilmente seriam medidas, como variáveis facilmente mensuráveis. É também possível realizar pertubações que dificilmente seriam realizadas em uma unidade industrial ou piloto, tanto devido a fatores economicos como de segurança. A partida de colunas de destilação é uma das operações mais difíceis na indústria química. O procedimento de partida, devido ao seu elevado período de tempo, possui tanto problemas de produtos fora de especificação quanto elevado gasto de energia. De posse de um modelo dinâmico diferentes condições e ações podem ser testadas e o procedimento pode ser otimizado. Entretanto, os modelos de colunas de destilação são representados por um sistema de equações algébrico-diferenciais de índice superior, e são escritos de forma a serem resolvidos sequencialmente. Este trabalho de tese implementa um modelo dinâmico de uma coluna de destilação para representar sua partida e operação. São analisados os resultados do estado estacionário, da dinâmica do processo quando submetido a perturbações e os perfis obtidos no procedimento de partida. O trabalho também apresenta uma forma diferenciada de escrever o modelo, forma simultânea e, utiliza um pacote de integração (PSIDE), até então não empregado em colunas de destilação. Este resolve o sistema de equações sem redução de índice. Como um trabalho complementar, foi proposta a utilização de uma rede neural wavelet para ser utilizada como sensor por software. A proposta basea-se no fato de que em problemas de grande porte pode não ser viável utilizar um modelo fenomenológico. Comuns são os problemas de inicializar todas as variáveis desejadas pois, pode não haver disponibilidade destes valores e o tempo de resolução do modelo pode ser elevado devido ao grande conjunto de equações algébrico-diferenciais. Emerging from the shadows: a case study of Goleta incorporation
No full textLocal governance struggles including municipal incorporations and city annexations have been the subjects of public and scholarly debates on metropolitan area administrations and their effects on land use, urban services and quality of life issues for area residents. Central to this dissertation is one such governance struggle that took place in the California's Goleta Valley.
Goleta Valley lies in the sun drenched southern California coastline. It remained a large densely populated unincorporated area in Santa Barbara County. Casting a shadow on the Valley's identity was its glamorous neighbor, the City of Santa Barbara. During the time period 1970-1995, one annexation proposal and three slightly different incorporation referendums were defeated at the polls. The focus of this dissertation is the fifth and successful incorporation bid that resulted in cityhood for Goleta in the year 2001.
The research question that is addressed by this thesis is how and why Goleta Valley was able to incorporate successfully while competing against a reactionary
and defensive annexation bid by the City of Santa Barbara. The research also attempts to discern the differences between the successful effort and earlier
unsuccessful initiatives. The research strategy applied was the case study method. The logic of employing a single-case study design is based on the rationale that
Goleta incorporation was a revelatory case that held the significant possibility of uncovering aspects of the incorporation process that were previously unknown in the literature.
The research findings reveal varying levels of support for separate incorporation theories. In contrast to the theorization of a single strong motive, the case reveals that the proponents in fact have multiple equally strong motives. Further, the Goleta case demonstrates that standard linear regressions will not fully explain successful incorporations. Instead, hedonic regressions or logit models are better suited to explain the effect of "residual" factors in incorporation struggles. In the Goleta case, "ground politics" and "access to funding resources" played a significant role in making the initiative a success. Goleta incorporation also renders some support for Marxian incorporation theories. Additionally, Goleta highlights the role that the boundary entrepreneurs play in shaping local governance battles.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 240-251)by Uma Krishna
