    Band-pass filtering analysis on low-frequency tonal noise generated from a Krueger storage cavity

    With the aim of investigating noise characteristics of tonal noise generated from a Krueger storage cavity, aero-acoustic experiments on a two-dimensional, Krueger flap configuration with an open or closed gap were conducted in the D5 aero-acoustic wind tunnel at Beihang University. The angles of attack are from 4 degrees to 8 degrees, and the free-stream velocities are from 45 m/s to 60 m/s. To study further the noise temporal characteristics and generation mechanism, experimental results were analyzed using a band-pass filtering method. The results show that low-frequency noise generated by the Krueger storage flow is dominant when the Krueger flap is deployed without a gap. For the Krueger configuration with a closed gap, low -frequency multiple tones observed at a free-stream velocity above 45 m/s are generated by self-excited oscillation within the storage cavity. The frequencies corresponding to these tonal noises have an octave relationship and satisfy the Strouhal number related scaling law. Filtering results reveal further that these low-frequency tones are intermittently and alternately excited in time and satisfy the oscillation mode switching mechanism.(c) 2022 Elsevier Masson SAS.     Channel Modeling for FR3 Upper Mid-band via Generative Adversarial Networks

    The upper mid-band (FR3) has been recently attracting interest for new generation of mobile networks, as it provides a promising balance between spectrum availability and coverage, which are inherent limitations of the sub 6GHz and millimeter wave bands, respectively. In order to efficiently design and optimize the network, channel modeling plays a key role since FR3 systems are expected to operate at multiple frequency bands. Data-driven methods, especially generative adversarial networks (GANs), can capture the intricate relationships among data samples, and provide an appropriate tool for FR3 channel modeling. In this work, we present the architecture, link state model, and path generative network of GAN-based FR3 channel modeling. The comparison of our model greatly matches the ray-tracing simulated data

    Quantifying the scales of spatial variation in gravel beds using terrestrial and airborne laser scanning data

    Previous studies measured gravel bed surfaces by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and close-range photogrammetry suggested the presence of at least two different scales of spatial variation in gravel bed surfaces. This study investigated the spatial variation of airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds acquired in gravel bed. Due to the large footprint of ALS systems, a smoother surface is expected, but there exists some uncertainty over the precise scale of ALS measurement (hereafter referred to as the spatial support). As a result, we applied the regularization method, which is a variogram upscaling approach, to investigate the true support of ALS data. The regularization results suggested that the gravel bed surface described by the ALS is much smoother than expected in terms of the ALS reported measurement scale. Moreover, we applied the factorial kriging (FK) method, which allows mapping of different scales of variation present in the data separately (different from ordinary kriging which produces a single map), to obtain the river bed topography at each scale of spatial variation. We found that the short-range and long-range FK maps of the TLS-derived DSMs were able to highlight the edges of gravels and clusters of gravels, respectively. The long-range FK maps of the ALS data shows a pattern of gravel-bed clusters and aggregations of gravels. However, the short-range FK maps of the ALS data produced noisy maps, due to the smoothing effect. This analysis, thus, shows clearly that ALS data may be insufficient for geomorphological and hydraulic engineering applications that require the resolution of individual gravels.</p

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
