The stability of IQ in people with low intellectual ability: an analysis of the literature

    No full text
A meta-analysis of the stability of low IQ (IQ 80) was performed on IQ tests that have been commonly used—tests that were derived by D. Wechsler (1949, 1955, 1974, 1981, 1991, 1997) and those based on the Binet scales (L. M. Terman, 1960; L. M. Terman & Merrill, 1972). Weighted- mean stability coefficients of .77 and .78 were found for Verbal IQ (V IQ) and Performance IQ (P IQ) on the Wechsler tests and .82 for Full-Scale IQ (FS IQ) on both Wechsler and Binet tests, for a mean test–retest interval of 2.8 years. Although the majority of FS IQs changed by less than 6 points, 14% changed by 10 points or more. The author suggests that the results of IQ assessment should be treated with more caution than previously thought

Getting Miles away from Terman: Did the CRPS found Catharine Cox Milex Unsilenced Psychology of Sex?

    No full text
Psychologist Catharine Cox Miles (1890–1984) is often remembered as the junior author, with Lewis Terman, of Sex and Personality. Written with support from the Committee for Research on the Problems of Sex (CRPS), Sex and Personality introduced the “masculinity-femininity” personality measure to psychology in 1936. Miles has been overlooked by some historians and constructed as a silent, indirect feminist by others. Private letters show that Terman and Miles had different assumptions about the need for library research work to precede the empirical work for Sex and Personality. Miles's 1935 chapter on the “Social Psychology of Sex” shows that her theoretical formulation of sex differed from Terman's in its emphasis on female embodiment, respect for the emerging tradition of the sex survey, and its opinions about the determinants of marital happiness, and the variability of intelligence. Ironically, CRPS monies wired to Terman may have funded Miles to develop this early formulation of the psychology of sex. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved

Three-dimensional scanning with dual-source computed tomography in patients with acute skeletal trauma

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of multiplanar reformatted images and threedimensional images created after multidetector computed tomography examination in detecting acute posttraumatic osseous pathology of the skeletal system. METHOD: Between October 2006 and December 2008, 105 patients with a history of acute trauma were referred to our service. Patients were evaluated with multidetector computed tomography using multiplanary reconstructed images initially (R-I), and six months after this initial evaluation, three-dimensional images were assessed of each patient (R-II). Axial images were used for guiding as a reference Data obtained was recorded and graded according to importance levels of the pathologies. RESULTS: The R-II score was higher in the non-articular and highest in periartricular fractures of the extremities, and thoracic and pelvic cage injuries. For the spinal column, while R-I data was more significant In patients referred with polytrauma, R-II data, was more statistically significant, for short processing and adaptation time to acquiring immediate critical information. For all cases it was seen that three dimensional scans were more efficient in providing the orientation, within a short time. CONCLUSION: By dual source multidedector tomography systems trauma patients may be evaluated by multiplanary and three dimensionally reconstructed images. When used correctly, three dimensional imaging is advantageous and can help determine the exact nature and extension and also importance of osseous injuries

Bilateral persistence of type 1 proatlantal arteries: Report of a case and review of the literature

    No full text
Persistent proatlantal artery type 1 is one of the four anastomotic vessels between the carotid and vertebrobasilar arterial systems. Persistence of this embryonic anastomosis is extremely rare. We present such a case with bilateral persistent proatlantal arteries that arose from internal carotid arteries, entered the skull via the foramen magnum and united with the horizontal portions of vertebral arteries. We also mention its embryology, potential clinical implications, and differentiating features between two types of proatlantal arteries. © American Society of Neuroradiology

ABSTRACT  This article addresses the practical  application of the Test  Terman Merril Form L. in children,  adolescents and  young  people with multiple disabilities and / or multiple challenges, as a valuable contribution to the field of psychology, based on the difficulty of implementing an intellectual  test  and  get results reliable  IQ, to severe cases of disability carrying  out the implementation of the test  in the same research group,  on two occasions, first the intellectual  battery  exactly as mandated by the author  was applied and on the second occasion the same test but with different considerations such as: use of materials according to visual loss, before the visual functional assessment and the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems for those with communication disorders. Leading  to obtain  reliable  IQ scores, as they respond to the individual needs and  to establish a diagnosis that reflects  the actual  knowledge of the child, adolescent or young  with multiple disabilities  or multiple challenges.  Keywords: Intelligence quotient,  Multidisability and/or  Multiple Challenges, Diagnosis, Augmentative and Alternative System of Communication, Visual functional Evaluation

Code canonicalization and clustering applied to grading

Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2016.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (page 51).Teachers of MOOCs need to analyze large quantities of student submissions. There are a few systems designed to provide feedback at scale. Adapting these systems for residential courses would provide a substantial benefit for instructors, as a large residential course might still have several hundred students. OverCode, one such system, clusters and canonicalizes student submissions that have been marked correct by an autograder. We present GroverCode, an expanded version of OverCode that canonicalizes incorrect student submissions as well, and includes interface features for assigning grades to submissions. GroverCode was deployed in 6.0001, an introductory Python programming course, to assist teaching staff in grading exams. Overall reactions to the system were very positive.by Stacey Terman.M. Eng
