    Clarence John Laughlin, Regionalist Surrealist

    No full text
abstract: Evoking a deChirican sensibility of “mystery and melancholy,” Laughlin capitalized upon, yet also ultimately contributed to, the mythology of mysterious New Orleans—city of the marvelous. Thus the possibilities and limitations of Regionalist Surrealism as place finds a test case there. Later in his career, Laughlin would go on to explore Surrealism as place with the rugged topography of the Arizona landscape. The changed locale is accompanied by a shift grounded in Dalian double images

How many focus markers are there in Konkomba?

    No full text
This article discusses the divergent status of the two particles lé and lá in the grammar of Konkomba, a Gur language (Niger-Congo) of the Gurma subgroup. While previous studies claim that both particles are focus markers, this author argues that only the particle lá should be analyzed as a pure pragmatic device. Distributional studies suggest that the use of particle lé, on the other hand, is only required under specific focus conditions, and primarily represents a syntactic device

    Rigidity of the Laughlin Liquid

We consider general N-particle wave functions that have the form of a product of the Laughlin state with filling factor 1/ℓ and an analytic function of the N variables. This is the most general form of a wave function that can arise through a perturbation of the Laughlin state by external potentials or impurities, while staying in the lowest Landau level and maintaining the strong correlations of the original state. We show that the perturbation can only shift or lower the 1-particle density but nowhere increase it above a maximum value. Consequences of this bound for the response of the Laughlin state to external fields are discussed.© The Author(s) 201

Photographic portrait of James Laughlin, author of "This Is My Blood," [s.d.]. A elderly man with smiling eyes turns his face toward the camera. He has a slight smile on his face, and a large nose, bushy eyebrows and slicked-back graying hair. He wears a light-colored suit, striped tie, and undergarment.; The book was to be published March 3, 1989 in a limited edition by The Yolla Bolly Press

Local incompressibility estimates for the Laughlin phase

We prove sharp density upper bounds on optimal length-scales for the ground states of classical 2D Coulomb systems and generalizations thereof. Our method is new, based on an auxiliary Thomas–Fermi-like variational model. Moreover, we deduce density upper bounds for the related low-temperature Gibbs states. Our motivation comes from fractional quantum Hall physics, more precisely, the perturbation of the Laughlin state by external potentials or impurities. These give rise to a class of many-body wave-functions that have the form of a product of the Laughlin state and an analytic function of many variables. This class is related via Laughlin’s plasma analogy to Gibbs states of the generalized classical Coulomb systems we consider. Our main result shows that the perturbation of the Laughlin state cannot increase the particle density anywhere, with implications for the response of FQHE systems to external perturbations.© The Author(s) 201

Clarence John Laughlin: Prophet Without Honor

Clarence John Laughlin (1905- 1985) of New Orleans is arguably the father of photographic surrealism in America. He was best known for his photographs of old plantation homes and his book, Ghosts along the Mississippi, but his life\u27s work was varied and broad. Laughlin was a mainstream photographer who was published in many national magazines. His contemporaries and associates included photographers Minor White, Wynn Bullock, and Edward Weston, as well as legendary editor Maxwell Perkins. Laughlin was, however, often marginalized and ignored due to misunderstandings of his work and his often volatile personality. Equally annoying to many was his devotion to capturing images that depicted, with a zealous and sometimes disturbing sense of self-righteousness, the evil and poverty that he saw in the world. A. J. Meek looks into the controversial life of one of the greatest photographers in American history. Through interviews with Laughlin\u27s colleagues, friends, and family, the author details the tumultuous connection between the struggles of the artist\u27s life, including strained professional relationships and failed marriages, and the work that brought him fame. A. J. Meek is professor emeritus of art at Louisiana State University. His previous books include Gettysburg to Vicksburg: The Five Original Civil War Battlefield Parks, Gardens of Louisiana: Places of Work and Wonder, Exploring Black and White Photography, and Red Pepper Paradise: Avery Island, Louisiana. John H. Lawrence is director of museum programs at The Historic New Orleans Collection.https://repository.lsu.edu/facultybooks/1515/thumbnail.jp

Laughlin McDonald. A Voting Rights Odyssey. Black Enfranchisement in Georgia.

Using a variety of primary sources, including an impressive array of court cases, Laughlin McDonald, Director of the Southern Regional Office of the American Civil Liberties Union in Atlanta since 1972, provides a detailed history of the quest for equal voting rights in Georgia from Reconstruction to the 1990s. Choosing Georgia, a state where the author has tried many voting cases over the years, as an example, McDonald vividly shows that race has clearly been part of the political process in..

Teaching Techniques for Improving Student Behavior and Performance in Classrooms: A Review of the Literature

Mackenzie Laughlin: Abstract Teaching Techniques for Improving Student Behavior and Performance in Classrooms: A Review of the Literature The primary purpose of this review of literature was to provide information about improving student behavior and performance in the classroom and the use of evidence-based practices for behavior management in general education classroom settings. The author took a closer look at classroom management components, emotionally supportive learning environments, and how student and classroom-level factors operate together to reduce student aggression. While reviewing the literature several themes were found, including four specific guidelines, practices, and curricula: high leverage practices related to social-emotional learning (Zimmer, 2023), the development of a class-wide function-relation intervention team (Wills et al., 2019; Kamps et al., 2015), social emotional skills (Portnow et al., 2018; Stoiber, 2011) and the SPARK curriculum (Green et al., 2021). The author then took this information and created close-captioned, informational videos for classroom teachers - with the intent of the videos to provide background information on social-emotional learning, the collection of data to inform decisions regarding behavior and ultimately facilitate conversation between general education teachers and special education teachers around behavior
