Gut microbiota in the pathogenesis and therapeutic approaches of diabetes

    No full text
The gut-liver axis plays a prominent role in the pathogenesis and therapy of metabolic diseases such as diabetes. The intestinal specific origin of several hormones that guide both inter-and post-prandial metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids, drives the attention of scientists and clinicians on the gut as a major site to intervene with novel diagnostic or prognostic markers. The role of intestinal ecology in the metabolic syndrome was postulated when gut microbiota was directly connected with inflammation, hyperinsulinemia, and diabetes. There have been several discoveries with the role of gut microbiota and gut-liver axis in diabetes. Also, there are several trials ongoing on the therapeutic efficacy of probiotic administration in diabetes and its complications. Here we point to the metabolic action of microbiota and discuss the actual state of the art on gut microbiota as a novel prognostic biomarker with a putative therapeutic role in diabetes. Quale letto per Sir Gawain? Trasformazioni del meraviglioso nella letteratura inglese del medioevo

    No full text
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, one of the most ambiguous texts of Middle English literature, will be here analyzed from the perspective of its author’s approach to the marvelous. The paper aims at showing the way the anonymous author presents the scenes where, according to literary conventions, the supernatural is at work, and reshapes the marvelous and the fantastic elements by placing them in a sort of realistic frame. This kind of marginality of the supernatural can be seen in the so-called “temptation episodes” that happen upon a bed. The paper argues that the author employs, as a starting point, the traditional adventure of the lit merveille, that appears in many works of different literary traditions dealing with Gawain, deprives the scene of its marvelous nature and transforms the adventure into a fight where the Lady of the Castle seems to be more dangerous than the weapons and the ferocious lion which elsewhere attack Gawain on the marvelous bed

Review of Pizzoli (2018): La politica linguistica in Italia. Dall’unificazione nazionale al dibattito sull’internazionalizzazione

La politica linguistica in Italia aims to describe language policies in Italy from the birth of the Italian nation-state to issues arising from the ongoing processes of globalization and internationalization. Its author, Lucilla Pizzoli, is a historian of the Italian language and a collaborator of the Società Dante Alighieri for the promotion of Italian language abroad. Her previous studies concerning language policy and planning (LPP) (see e.g. Pizzoli 2007 and 2012) have now been expanded into a book

The result of work undertaken on the Leverhulme Project between July and September 2006 comprising the preparation of two cross referenced booklists, containing titles published - and recommended by the Authorities - during the World War II period in a series of over 20 lists. This item contains two excel spreadsheets: the first contains 5300+ titles of UK publications. They are listed alphabetically according to author and provide the following data: author, title of work (descriptive phrase if available), publisher, publication date, list where title appears, category indication wihin the list (if applicable) and sponsoring body (if applicable). Titles appearing in the Series or as Reference Works are listed within the main body and separately as coda. The second file contains approximately 1500 titles of US-circulated books. Cross referencing to the UK master list has been undertaken whenever applicable

Safety and efficacy of a feed additive consisting of l‐valine produced by Corynebacterium glutamicum CGMCC 7.366 for all animal species (Ningxia Eppen Biotech Co., Ltd.)

[EN] Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of the feed additive consisting of l-valine produced by fermentation using a non-genetically modified strain of Corynebacterium glutamicum (CGMCC 7.366). The additive is intended to be used in feed and water for drinking for all animal species and categories. The production strain is considered suitable for the qualified presumption of safety (QPS) approach to safety assessment. The FEEDAP Panel concludes that l-valine produced using C. glutamicum CGMCC 7.366 is safe for the target species when supplemented in appropriate amounts to the diet according to the nutritional needs of the target species. The FEEDAP Panel has concerns on the use of amino acids in water for drinking for hygienic reasons, and due to the risk of imbalances when administered simultaneously via feed. The use of l-valine produced using C. glutamicum CGMCC 7.366 in animal nutrition is considered safe for the consumer and for the environment. No conclusion could be drawn on the potential of l-valine produced using C. glutamicum CGMCC 7.366 to be toxic by inhalation, irritant to the skin or eyes, or a dermal sensitiser due to the lack of data. The additive l-valine produced by fermentation using C. glutamicum CGMCC 7.366 is regarded as an efficacious source of the essential amino acid l-valine for non-ruminant nutrition. For the supplemental l-valine to be as efficacious in ruminants as in non-ruminant species, it requires protection against degradation in the rumenSIThe Panel wishes to acknowledge the contribution of Jaume Galobart, Yolanda Garc ıa Cazorla and Lucilla Gregoretti to this opinio

Teachers’ attitudes: learner’s errors and standard norms.

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the pedagogical implications of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) as regards the reconceptualization of learners’ deviations from native-speaker standard norms, traditionally referred to as errors. The author provides a preliminary historical overview of approaches to English language teaching (ELT) to highlight the evolution of psycholinguistic notions in the area of cognitive processes and second language acquisition. The phenomenon of language variation is seen through the lens of Vygotsky’s (1978) sociocultural theory, which leads to a different understanding of the learner’s personal voice and of their identity in multicultural global communication. Finally, the author presents some of the results of a teacher’s survey on the attitudes of a group of Italian teachers of English about the emergence of ELF in the English classroom

An analysis of the utilization of selected prescribed medical services by Medicaid and Medicare recipients, 1989

The purpose of the study is to analyze the difference in the utilization of prescribed medications by Medicaid and Medicare recipients. This study examines problems many individuals in longterm care facilities face, when they are medicare recipients and unable to receive medical care which is as adequate as those who are beneficiaries of Medicaid. This study involved thirty residents, divided equally into two groups. They resided in a small long-term care facility located in Fulton County (Georgia). Findings revealed that Medicare recipients tend to visit their health providers less frequently, purchase fewer prescribed medications, and therefore, receive less adequate medical care than Medicaid recipients
