    Preventing phosphine poisoning and explosions during fumigation

    "This Alert describes 205 cases of illness or injury in workers exposed to phosphine gas associated with phosphide fumigants. Information about these exposures is urgently needed by agricultural workers, employers, cooperative extension agents, physicians, and other health care providers. NIOSH therefore requests that editors of trade journals, safety and health officials, labor unions, and agricultural employers bring this Alert to the attention of all workers who handle products that generate phosphine gas. Phosphide fumigants release toxic phosphine gas (PH3) when they contact moisture in the air. When phosphine is inhaled, it can react with moisture in the lungs to form phosphoric acid, which can cause blistering and edema. These effects can be serious or fatal. Exposure to phosphine has also been linked with other effects such as chest tightness, headache, dizziness, and nausea. Also, improper handling of aluminum and magnesium phosphide has caused injuries from flash fires and explosions. In 1988, NIOSH published survey results showing that worker exposure to phosphine often substantially exceeded the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) [Zaebst et. al. 1988].     Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro Tecnológico, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Produção, Florianópolis, 2012No processo de manufatura em larga escala do principal componente do motor elétrico de indução, o estator, a exigência é a utilização de equipamentos robustos, eficientes e principalmente capazes de manter a qualidade do produto em níveis elevados de produção. A garantia do correto funcionamento do sistema de isolamento elétrico de um estator é papel fundamental dos fabricantes, das normas construtivas que seguem, dos órgãos certificadores que regulamentam tais normas e principalmente do equipamento que é utilizado para qualificá-lo depois de fabricado. Não há dúvida quanto ao emprego deste equipamento, uma vez que a ele é entregue a responsabilidade de manter a segurança do usuário final de um motor elétrico e de garantir que o estator irá funcionar de acordo com aquilo que foi proposto para o seu uso. Adequado é o numero de fabricantes de equipamentos denominados painéis de testes elétricos de segurança e os tipos de métodos de testes que aplicam para classificar o sistema de isolamento de um estator. O que não necessariamente é satisfatório é a relação ao longo do tempo entre o fabricante de estatores com e o fabricante do modelo de painel de testes elétricos de segurança que emprega em suas linhas de produção em massa. A predominância nesse setor é de fabricantes que desenvolvem a sua versão de painéis de testes elétricos e dos equipamentos que o compõem, gerando uma forte dependência tecnológica dos fabricantes de estatores elétricos com os de painéis. Por outro lado, uma variedade de módulos de prateleira para testes elétricos de estatores existente no mercado possibilita a avaliação do sistema de isolamento de um estator no seu campo de atuação. Para cada método de teste empregado em um painel de teste elétrico de um estator há uma variedade enorme de marcas e modelos de módulos de testes que competem em preço, interfaces, facilidade de aplicação, compatibilidade com softwares gerenciadores etc. A lacuna existente entre essas duas tecnologias motivou a execução desta dissertação e o resultado dela é a obtenção de um equipamento que permite classificar o sistema de isolamento do estator elétrico no processo produtivo e, o mais significativo, que possui uma vantagem frente às versões existentes no mercado, ou seja, os benefícios da modularização.Abstract : In mass production of the electric motor most important part, the stator, the request is using efficient and robust equipment to assure quality guaranty in a high capacity level. The right function of a stator insulation system is sustained by its motor design, its standards and specifically through its insulation security test, which is performed by equipment named stator electrical safety testing panel at the end of the productivity chain. Since the responsibility of keeping the motors user integrity is transferred to this equipment, there is no doubt of its use. Considered quantities of electrical safety testing panel suppliers are available at the market and the tests that they perform are satisfactory. What is not necessarily satisfying is the relationship over the time between stator manufacturer and manufacturer model test panels employing electrical safety in its mass production lines. The dominance of these sector manufacturers that develop their own version of panels and electrical testing equipments generates a strong dependence from manufacturers of electric stators to electrical safety testing panels. On the other hand, a wide range of standard test modules that compete in prices, interfaces, facility features, software management compatibility, etc, provide electrical tests of the stators insulation system at its playing fields. The gap between both technologies motivated the implementation of this dissertation and the result of it was the obtaining of a product which allows classifying the stator electrical insulation system in its mass production, and more significantly, which has an advantage over the versions available on the market, i.e., the benefits of modularization

    A response to Granberg et al. (2024)

    In this response to Granberg et al. (2024), I explain my reasons for using the Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG and Dale-Chall readability scores in Hengel (2022). I also identify several errors in textstat, the program Granberg et al. (2024) use to calculate their scores. After correcting these errors, textstat’s gender readability gaps and p-values for the Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog and SMOG scores are very similar to those reported in Hengel (2022). textstat also generates Dale-Chall gender readability gaps that are 62–79 percent of the Dale-Chall estimate from Hengel (2022) and remaining variation is entirely due to differences in the familiar word lists used by each program (e.g., textstat omits words such as “men’s” and “women’s” that are disproportionately found in female-authored papers). Meanwhile, Granberg et al. (2024)’s alternative scores either generate similarly-sized readability gaps or have been shown to be less powerful predictors of reading comprehension in adult reading material.
