No full textGenuine Savings has emerged as a widely-used indicator of sustainable development. In this paper, we use long-term data stretching back to 1870 to undertake empirical tests of the relationship between Genuine Savings (GS) and future well-being for three countries: Britain, the USA and Germany. Our tests are based on an underlying theoretical relationship between GS and changes in the present value of future consumption. Based on both single country and panel results, we find evidence supporting the existence of a cointegrating (long run equilibrium) relationship between GS and future well-being, and fail to reject the basic theoretical result on the relationship between these two macroeconomic variables. This provides some support for the GS measure of weak sustainability. We also show the effects of modelling shocks, such as World War Two and the Great Depression

Expressivity and musical shape in turntablism : Response to Greasley and Prior
No full textThis commentary to Greasley and Prior’s paper “Mixtapes and turntablism: DJs’ perspective on musical shape” extends the findings of the study by looking at the turntablism perspective. First, a general discussion on the study’s method and background is given. Then, the role of turntables as musical instruments in creating musical shape is outlined. Finally, some relationships between turntablism techniques, expressive performances and musical shape are presented. In general, the findings in the study support previously published studies in this insufficiently researched area.</p

The phenomenology of ‘approach to studying’: the idiographic turn
No full text'Approach to studying' research focuses on the manner ( deep, surface, etc.) in which studying is grasped. This is the Husserlian 'noesis', the mental orientation, to studying. In this article, it is argued that attention must also be given to the subjective meaning of studying and of what is studied - the Husserlian 'noema'. However, the noema/noesis distinction, though it draws attention to the poverty of characterising approaches to studying simply as mental orientation, has certain flaws, which are discussed. It is most appropriate to develop the noema so as to bring out the human situation of studying within the lifeworld of the student. Idiographic sensibility - an awareness of the individuality of the lifeworld - is needed for anything close to a full understanding of a person's approach to studying

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textThe aim of this review is to summarize some of the main findings from our laboratory as well as from others concerning the biochemical, molecular, and functional properties of the alpha1b-adrenergic receptor. Experimental and computational mutagenesis of the alpha1b-adrenergic receptor have been instrumental in elucidating some of the molecular mechanisms underlying receptor activation and receptor coupling to Gq. The knockout mouse model lacking the alpha1b-adrenergic receptor has highlighted the potential implication of this receptor subtype in variety of functions including the regulation of blood pressure, glucose homeostasis, and the rewarding response to drugs of abuse
