Dynamics of Network Formation Processes in the Co-Author Model
No full textThis article studies the dynamics in the formation processes of a mutual consent network in game theory setting: the Co-Author Model. In this article, a limited observation is applied and analytical results are derived. Then, 2 parameters are varied: the number of individuals in the network and the initial probability of the links in the network in its initial state. No full textGrayson Perry, diplomatosi all’accademia di belle arti di Portsmouth nel 1982, vincitore del Turner Prize 2003, nonché Royal Academician of Art dal 2011, meriterebbe un’analisi più approfondita del suo percorso e delle sue opere, sebbene la critica artistica se ne sia scarsamente interessata. Infatti questo People’s Princess (fig.1), celebre nel Regno Unito come travestito-ceramista, vanta nella sua carriera un percorso che si dipana in varie discipline delle arti: performer, regista, ceramista, artista tessile, incisore, scrittore nonché personaggio pubblico televisivo e radiofonico. Il suo lavoro, ormai inserito negli alti circuiti dell’arte contemporanea inglese, potrebbe essere paragonabile a un brand di alta moda, un marchio che produce degli utili in un mondo artistico apparentemente senza nessuna aura. Perry risulta particolarmente importante guardando alla società contemporanea tardo capitalistica occidentale di cui la sua arte può essere considerata un esemplare “prodotto culturale”.
Tuttavia, è altresì vero che l’artista è ben consapevole della parte che sta giocando in questo scenario e, con uno stile figurativo del tutto personale, sembra voler fuggire da ogni catalogazione, dimostrando la difficoltà di collocarlo all’interno delle prestabilite categorie artistiche. In parte, questo è l’effetto dovuto a una congestione di competenze tecniche tradizionali e una modernità di espressione grafica e visiva del tutto individuale. Il suo linguaggio visivo, spesso osceno e indecente, è pieno di costanti rimandi alla storia dell’arte e alla sua autoreferenzialità. Nelle sue opere mescola quindi contenuti e significati, usi e costumi, del tutto moderni e riferibili alla nostra società, che possono fare di questo artista un discendente di illustri satiristi inglesi come William Hogarth. Perry è un critico, sebbene in primo luogo di sé stesso, in cui ognuno è destinato a riconoscere i vizi e le virtù della nostra epoca.
In Italia non c’è alcuna pubblicazione tradotta su Perry, probabilmente anche perché è catalogabile come un fenomeno del tutto british, per la società cui si riferisce e la cultura da cui attinge. Sebbene sia quasi impossibile colmare la lacuna con questo elaborato, la mia intenzione è tratteggiare un’analisi di alcuni dei caratteri più sorprendenti della sua produzione. L’analisi è volta ad indagare le caratteristiche che rendono la sua produzione sintomatica dello Zeitgeist, lo spirito del tempo contemporaneo.
La tesi che segue è suddivisa in quattro capitoli, ognuno dei quali intende mettere in luce aspetti diversi dell’artista e della sua produzione. Per farlo, imprescindibile è stata la lettura della monografia più recente ed aggiornata sull’artista, Grayson Perry (2015) realizzata dalla storica dell’arte Jacky Klein, un resoconto visivo della produzione dell’artista dagli esordi fino al presente. Il primo capitolo indaga l’infanzia di Perry avvalendosi della sua biografia scritta dall’amica Wendy Jones, Grayson Perry: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Girl (2006), utile per riscontrare come le circostanze che hanno segnato la sua vita siano una componente essenziale della sua arte, giudicata per questo motivo “confessionale”. A tal riguardo, si prenderà in considerazione l’accezione “foucaultiana” di confessione presente nel volume del filosofo francese, Storia della Sessualità: La volontà di sapere (1976) e si indagherà il rapporto che intercorre tra questa visione di Michel Foucault e l’arte di Grayson Perry.
La seconda parte si concentra sulle influenze artistiche ricevute in gioventù dall’artista. Per il contesto underground londinese degli anni ’80 è stato utile avvalersi del volume London Calling: La controcultura a Londra dal ’45 a oggi (2012) dell’autore Barry Miles, un capitolo del quale è dedicato alla parentesi postpunk del neo romanticismo, da cui emerse Perry. Una particolare attenzione sarà riservata al gruppo dei Neo-Naturisti, di cui l’artista fece parte in questo contesto subculturale londinese degli anni ’80. Il paragrafo seguente è invece dedicato all’artista e performer Bruce Lacey, un maestro spirituale sia per l’artista che per i membri Neo-Naturisti; in seguito si illustrerà la fascinazione di Perry per gli outsider artists, in particolare per il pittore americano Henry Darger. Il paragrafo conclusivo del capitolo è invece dedicato alle dinamiche e alle figure istituzionali che hanno portato Grayson Perry ad inserirsi nell’elitario mercato britannico dell’arte contemporanea. Per prendere visione dei poteri e delle istituzioni che governano questi ambienti legati all’economia dell’arte mi sono dotato del volume Contemporary British art: an introduction (2008) del professore Grant Pooke, il cui primo capitolo è dedicato a questo tema.
Il terzo capitolo della tesi è invece dedicato alla particolare produzione di Perry: un’arte che illustra l’immaginario e le fantasie privati dell’artista attraverso le tecniche di tradizione artigiana. Il primo paragrafo prende in esame il rapporto tra produzione artigianale e arte nella postmodernità. Chiave di volta per delineare questa tematica, e che fornisce ulteriore credito agli altri saggi utilizzati per delineare l’argomento, è il volume The craft reader (2010) dell’autore Glenn Adamson, rinomato critico e teorico dei crafts nel mondo anglosassone. A questa parte fa seguito l’analisi sul particolare utilizzo di Perry del materiale ceramico, cercando di capire come l’artista si differenzi dagli altri artisti che hanno utilizzato la ceramica come materiale di ricerca espressiva. Successivamente, il suo decorativismo verrà messo a confronto con l’estetica kitsch e la sensibilità camp. In questo ambito disciplinare, il libro Il kitsch (2014) del professore di estetica Andrea Mecacci è stato importante per delineare tale confronto. Infine, in conclusione di capitolo, si analizzeranno alcune sue opere particolarmente esemplificative delle tematiche affrontate nei paragrafi precedenti e si concluderà questa parte tornando a fare qualche considerazione finale sul rapporto tra artigianato e modernità.
Il quarto e ultimo capitolo indagherà il rapporto di Perry con la sessualità, la quale è un aspetto tutt’altro che marginale nella sua produzione artistica. Il saggio del professor Jeffrey Jones, Grayson Perry: The pot is the man (2000) è a questo riguardo rilevante per il rapporto che intercorre tra il travestitismo di Perry e i suoi vasi. Inoltre, il capitolo si prefigge l’obiettivo di indagare le affinità e le divergenze tra la lotta politica di liberazione sessuale e l’arte di Perry. Per la realizzazione di questa parte è stata invece illuminante la lettura del saggio “Perversity to match the curtains”: Queering the Life Story with Grayson Perry (2011) della professoressa Margaretta Jolly.
La conclusione è dedicata alla forza del populismo nella postmodernità e l’obiettivo di questa parte conclusiva è quello di mettere in luce come anche Perry sembra inserirsi in questo contesto in cui se l’aura artistica sembra svanire sotto la logica del mercato. In questo ambito sono ricorso alla critica che lo storico dell’arte Julian Stallabrass muove al mondo elitario dell’arte nel suo scritto Elite Art in an Age of Populism (2013), il quale analizza come il gusto popolare sia entrato a far parte dell’élite culturale.

Criminally Incompetent Academic Misinterpretation of Criminal Data-and how the Media Pushed the Fake News
No full textOn 17 Jan 2018 multiple news sources (e.g. see here, here, and here) ran a story about a new research paper that claims to expose both the inaccuracies and racial bias in one of the most common algorithms used by parole boards to predict recidivism (i.e. whether or not a defendant will re-offend). The research paper was written by the world famous computer scientist Hany Farid (along with a student Julia Dressel). But the real story here is that the paper’s accusation of racial bias (specifically that the algorithm is biased against black people) is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of causation and statistics. The algorithm is no more ‘biased’ against black people than it is biased against white single parents, old people, people living in Beattyville Kentucky, or women called ‘Amber’. In fact, as we show in this brief article, if you choose any factor that correlates with poverty you will inevitably replicate the statistical ‘bias’ claimed in the paper. And if you accept the validity of the claims in the paper then you must also accept, for example, that a charity which uses poverty as a factor to identify and help homeless people is being racist because it is biased against white people (and also, interestingly, Indian Americans). The fact that the article was published and that none of the media running the story realise that they are pushing fake news is what is most important here. Depressingly, many similar research studies involving the same kind of misinterpretation of statistics result in popular media articles that push a false narrative of one kind or another

Donovan's "Don't Marry" ( Evlenmeyin Nasıl, Ne Zaman Ve Kiminle Evlenilebileceği Üzerine Tavsiyeler) is an advice book written in the late 19th century that deals with the institution of marriage and partner selection. Translated into Turkish by Umut Yarım, this work starts from the premise that marriage is a serious partnership rather than a romantic dream. The author warns young people against making hasty decisions and lists the points to be considered to achieve happiness in marriage. The book covers topics such as the characteristics of the ideal spouse, character compatibility, the importance of financial status, and the difficulties that may be encountered in marriage in detail. While seeking answers to fundamental questions such as "Who to marry?" and "When to marry?", Donovan also examines the causes of unhappy marriages. Although the work reflects the social norms of the period, it encourages the reader to make conscious and prudent choices by offering universal observations on human relationships. The author's aim is not to reject marriage completely, but to protect against the regrets of marriages made with the wrong person or at the wrong time.James W. The method of the study is based on object-oriented approach by Wiesław Banyś. In the first part, the author attempts to give a brief overview of the theories on the expletive negation. The second part is the analysis of the different uses of the ‘ne explétif’ and their Polish translations. The author distinguishes two types of the French ‘ne explétif’ in Polish : ‘nie without the value of negation’ and ‘pure expletive nie’. The results of the research are presented in ten syntacticsemantic schemes, i.e. in one of the computationally implementable formats of description used in the object-oriented approach.The aim of the present paper is to analyse the French ‘ne explétif’ for the purpose of its machine translation into Polish. Understanding 1968: the case of Brest
No full textThis article examines the dominance of Paris in how May '68 has been portrayed over the years. It will be argued, through a case-study of the revolt in the Breton city of Brest, that the Paris-centred approach is one that belies the true nationwide aspect of May/June 1968. As one of a range of characteristics, the concentration on the Latin Quarter has helped mould what Kristin Ross has described as the 'official history' of 1968. An examination of how the events were played out within different regional contexts would go a long way towards helping overcome the shortcomings of the increasingly narrow portrayal that has come to dominate the stereotypical image of 1968
