    Life's Simple 7: Saving Black Men's Lives

The burden of cardiometabolic diseases including type 2 diabetes (DM), obesity and hypertension as well as cancer is greatest among Africans Americans (AA). In Ohio, AAs have the highest rates of DM, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer and mortality from these diseases. Thus, strategies to prevent DM, CVD, cancer and mortality among AAs are critically needed. The National African American Male Wellness Walk Initiative (AAMWWI) was established in Columbus, Ohio in 2004, with the aim of reducing disparities in chronic diseases and premature death among AA males. During the last 14 years, it has become the largest health initiative in central Ohio for AAs. This year, it is estimated that the AAMWWI had 20,000 participants and nearly 2,000 free health screenings. The Ohio State University has been a valued partner in this effort; and leadership from the AAMWW connected with Ohio State faculty to collaborate in the shared mission of improving disparities in diabetes, CVD, cancer and mortality. Attaining health targets for the American Heart Association's (AHA) "Life's Simple 7" including targets for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, smoking, body mass index, physical activity and dietary intake is associated with lower risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and mortality among AAs. The aim of the partnership between AAMWWI and Ohio State is to design a novel intervention for AA males in central Ohio to improve attainment of Life's Simple 7. The audience will hear from Mr. John Gregory, founder of the AAMWWI, Dr. Joshua Joseph, assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, and Dr. Darrell Gray, II, assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and deputy director of the Center for Cancer Health Equity. These speakers will 1) review the history of AAMWWI, 2) review recent longitudinal Life's Simple 7 using data from the AAMWWI, and 3) engage the audience in discussion about ideas for sustainable intervention for AA males that increases attainment of Life's Simple 7. The target audience includes community members and organization leadership, students, faculty, health advocates, medical professionals, and researchers who are engaged in the work of examining health disparities and achieving health equity.AUTHOR AFFILIATION: Darrell Gray II, Assistant Professor, College of Medicine, [email protected] (Corresponding Author); John Gregory, Co-Founder, African American Male Wellness Walk Initiative; Chad Anderson, Executive Director, African American Male Wellness Walk Initiative; Latasha Parks, Nurse, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center; Joshua Joseph, Assistant Professor, College of Medicine; Mark White, Founder, Gateway Health & Wellness Center, and Co-Founder, African American Male Wellness Walk Initiative. The burden of type 2 diabetes (DM), obesity, hypertension and cancer are greatest among African-Americans (AA). Attempted endoscopic closure of a pancreaticocolonic fistula with an over-the-scope clip

Context Spontaneous development of fistulae is an uncommon complication of acute pancreatitis. Until recently, surgical management has been the standard of care. Endoscopic treatment has been described with hemoclips and glue. Case report We report a case of a gentleman with a history of recurrent episodes of acute pancreatitis who presented with symptoms correlating with the development of a pancreatic-colonic fistula. Closure of the fistula was attempted with an over-the-scope clip. Conclusion More evidence is needed to determine criteria for use of over-the-scope clip in closure of GI and pancreatic fistulae.Image: Endoscopic view of the angled guidewire protruding through the fistula and the over-the-scope clip

Investigation of inoculant effect on cast iron

    No full text
An assumption was made that extensive holding time of an inoculated gray iron melt would result in a loss of physical properties of castings poured from this melt. This theory was examined in both a literature search and by testing and conclusions drawn from these findings are presented and discussed. Although there is a great deal of data available which discusses inoculants and their effects, very little mention is made of the effect of holding time in any of this material. The results indicate that holding time is of considerable importance when dealing with inoculated iron, and that calcium silicon inoculant is a very effective inoculant when used properly. It was also shown that the size of the inoculant used has a great deal to do with obtaining desired results in gray iron castings --Abstract, page ii

    Originalism\u27s Selection Problem

    No full text
This Essay examines the problem of selection with any originalist theory and what it means for constitutional adjudication. Part I surveys the major branches of originalism, explains how each share a commitment to the pursuit of objective, knowable, falsifiable fact, and then use that fact as a fixed point to constrain discretion. Part II discusses how each of these theories are vulnerable to methodological challenges familiar to all empirical projects. Part III explores the implications of these methodological challenges for originalism in particular and for constitutional doctrine and theory more generally. This abstract has been taken from the author\u27s introduction

The representation and mediation of national identity in the production of post-apartheid, South African cinema

    No full text
Includes bibliographical references (p. 218-236).In 1994, South Africa was emancipated from apartheid, and in 1996, a new democratic Constitution was released. This charter envisioned a progressive society and placed emphasis on equality, multiculturalism, reconciliation and freedom. The state targeted the cultural industries, including cinema, to carry this new vision to the nation. The problem, however, was that the production, exhibition and distribution infrastructure inherited from apartheid was not only dominated by Hollywood, but also exclusively catered for the white sector of the nation. This monopolised, racially skewed structure continues to pose an obstacle to the dissemination of progressive identities and the sustainability of local cinema. Through an analysis of relevant film policy, industry structure and specific cinematic texts, this study aims to trace the intersection between the dynamics of national identity representation and South Africa's political and economic position as a developing nation in the global marketplace. The research presented took place over a period of three years (2007-2010) and incorporated both quantitative and qualitative methods

Design and preliminary testing of a rotary internal combustion engine

    No full text
With the advent of legislation against pollution, and rising wage, manufacturing, and materials costs, the prime mover industry is presently intent on developing new economical, non-polluting methods of power. It was the hope of the author that the engine described herein would provide an advancement towards meeting the new requirements. The design and resulting prototype is an eight cylinder rotary internal combustion engine, weighing approximately sixty pounds, and operating on the tour stroke principle. Theoretical calculations were made to determine ideal horsepower, mean effective pressure, and efficiency. Ideal horsepower ranged from 38.7 to 62.8. A dynamic analysis of the pistons indicates that, neglecting external loads and friction forces, they caused no net work on the system. Initial testing of the prototype with combustion occurring indicated conceptual feasibility and good cycle characteristics, although poor sealing caused the compression ratio to be too low for sustained operation. With proper seals, the engine\u27s performance should approach the calculated values --Abstract, page ii
