This essay is the revised version of a seminar originally held at the University of Bologna on 28 March 2012 as part of Prof. Giovanni Tallarico’s French Translation course and under the patronage of CeSLiC (Centre for the Study of Languages and Cultures). Leaving aside the debate on the untranslatability of poetry, the author aims to investigate what poetic translation can in fact offer. The argument is divided into two sections: a theoretical introduction offering some examples and a textual analysis essay. In the first section, the metaphorical opening is identified as the typical signifying tool used in the modern poetic text (Renzi 1991). Attention is drawn to how the opening is generated within the text through the style’s agency. Refusing with Meschonnic (1969) to interpret style as a ‘deflection from the standard’, the latter is rather defined as the setting up of an unprecedented matching system between signified and signifier, in a process of re-motivation of the sign process (Risset 2011) typical of the literary text. Style thus covers all levels of the signifier, from word order to each phoneme’s distinctive features and at all levels its action may be spotted by observing the interlace between the level of equivalence and that of difference (Jakobson 1987a). Through further reflection, style’s potentialities within the poetic text are seen to extend into the space and time of a specific tradition, with its specific, different and changeable values from generation to generation. The impossibility of comparing different traditions results in the impossibility of any replacement option or equivalence between the original text and the translated text, which are rather distinct terms of a relationship. This aspect is developed with reference to Fortini’s remarks (1987 and 2011), from which the distinction between three types of translation – paraphrase, artistic translation and re-make – is drawn. An illustration of the introductory theoretical remarks is offered in the second part through the text analysis of a poem by Henri Michaux, La Cordillera de los Andes, alongside the Italian translations by Luciano Erba and by Mario Luzi. The former translation tends to soften hard angles in the original’s vocabulary, metre and syntax, by modifying its expressive framework and by overturning its axiological structure. The latter is more subtle in its use of register nuances and slight semantic shifts, thus opening the text to a transcendental dimension. This study offers some essential reference points for the debate on poetic translation in the twentieth century. It accepts the hypothesis that poetic translation may be aimed at translating a stylistic system, irrespective of the different values that will still be assigned to it within the literature of the destination language. Finally, through an original analysis it exemplifies the concrete ways and the different extent to which the two poets-translators transform the same original text by drawing on their own different poetics and stylistic resources

By observing the activity of editors and periodicals in Milan between 1945 and 1964 - «Il Politecnico», «Corriere della Sera», «Il Verri», All’Insegna del Pesce d’Oro, Il Saggiatore – the author analyzes how André Frénaud's 'metaphysical realism' melds and interacts with the poetical theory and practice of major italian poets, born and/or living in Milan: Eugenio Montale, Franco Fortini, Nelo Risi, Luciano Erba

Right after World War II, the stride of European poetry, that from its romantic roots and then through symbolism and surrealism had come to hermeticism in Italy during the 1930s, seems to come to a standstill. From coping with the tragedy of war comes the urgency to tear the veil of poetic absolute and to revert to testifying the concrete experiences of men in history. A new disposition sets forth in the second half of the 1950s thanks to authors such as Giorgio Caproni, Franco Fortini, Mario Luzi, Vittorio Sereni and Andrea Zanzotto. Albeit isolated each in his own path, they all share a deep-rooted orientation in their way of making poetry: their prosaic and narrative approach, the comparison to tradition, the extraneousness to the neo-avantgarde as well as to the new orphism. The purpose of the present research is to observe such generation from the angle of its relation to French poetry, outlining a framework of its reception in Italy from the 1950s to the 1980s through an introductory essay and a few monographic studies. This is the period when great masters Arthur Rimbaud and Stéphane Mallarmé are reread in a negative key, when Charles Baudelaire's expressionistic realism is discovered once more, young André Frénaud's verses are translated and heedful dialogues are initiated with the great contemporaries Jacques Prévert, René Char, Henri Michaux, Francis Ponge

Annunzio bibliografico dell'antologia in lingua inglese "Translation: Theory and Practice. A Historical Reader". Bibliographical note on the publication of the English anthology Translation: Theory and Practice. A Historical Reader. The latter follows a mainly chronological, and partly thematic order and features a cross-section of genres and countries (prefaces, essays, dictionary entries, correspondence, lecture transcripts, interviews, short stories and novels), shedding light on both translation practices and theoretical approaches in their development from Antiquity to the present day

The present essay is an introduction to the connections between Andrea Zanzotto and French language and literature through a survey of the poet’s readings, essays and translations, right across the period from the thirties to the late nineties. It provides an analysis of the poet’s reviews of the literature on the other side of the Alps - Éluard, Michaux, Artaud, Leiris, Tardieu, Deguy – by linking them with the whole of his critical and self-exegetical work. The appendix contains the transcript of a 2003 interview of mine with Zanzotto

The essay deals with the reception of Andrea Zanzotto’s poetry in France. It then dwells on Philippe Di Meo’s work, as a critic and a translator. Finally, it analyses a representative selection of Di Meo’s translations – across almost the whole of Zanzotto’s works – and outlines its fundamental approach

Eight essays on Symbolism by Sergio Cigada, published in italian between 1960 and 2010, collected here for the fist time and translated into French. 1) Charles Baudelaire : Anthropology and Poetics. The life of Man is exile in a hostile land, where original harmony is corrupted and broken down. In the work of art, these heterogeneous fragments are composed by means of Imagination, and the original unity of the cosmos is restored. Baudelaire translates this idea of man and of art into rhetoric which merges heterogeneous parts of language into stylistic figures (such as thematic association, paysage d’âme, allegory, etc.) which will later become typical of Symbolist literature. 2) Les Déliquescences. Poèmes décadents d’Adoré Floupette. Introduction. The collection Les Déliquescences offers a parody of mannerisms in Symbolist literature, particularly syntactical acrobatics, metrical virtuosity, and sinister motifs. The two designations Symbolisme and Décadentisme actually refer to a single literary movement. 3) Rimbaud from the Lettre du Voyant to the Bateau ivre. The theoretical text Lettre du Voyant and the narrative poem Le Bateau ivre share the same argumentative structure. It takes another two years before the revolution of poetry advocated by Rimbaud in these two texts is extended from semantic structures to versification. Bateau ivre is in fact moulded out of a still typically Parnassian metrical form. 4) Rimbaud, Une saison en enfer, « Adieu ». On Essentiality. The beginning of Adieu shows a stylistic feature that frequently occurs in Rimbaud’s poetry : the reduction of a syntagm to its factual core by the elimination of anything that derives from subjective perception. This feature reflects his idea that poetry should aim to tell the essence of things. 5) About Le Loup criait sous les feuilles by Arthur Rimbaud. Le loup criait sous les feuilles presents an obvious reference to the book of Ezekiel, in the Old Testament. Critics who intend to address the exegesis of a poet of such wide reading as Rimbaud ought to be conversant with the Scriptures. 6) Mallarmé, Autre éventail. Autre éventail is one of the best outcomes of Mallarmé’s poetics. The poem sets the elegant translation of a frivolous, typically Parnassian object, such as a fan, into a disincarnated image of the ultimate reality. As opposed to other poems by Mallarmé, this one closes with the return of the object to its basic function. 7) Paul Verlaine. Analysis and comment. The poem ΙΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΘΕΟΥ ΥΙΟΣ ΣΩΤΗΡ is based on a thematic association between Christ and a fish, an association which refers to a well-grounded tradition in the Scriptures and in patristic literature. 8) Two poems by Verlaine. The composition of Cortège was influenced by the first version of Flaubert’s Tentation de Saint Antoine. In Verlaine’s poem, though, the original images are weakened and in some way coarsened. While searching for the sources of the poem Marco, one is led to reconstruct a whole literary cycle : the « history of Marco the courtesan » in XIXth century French literature.

This article was first conceived upon discovering a collection of unpublished correspondence between the French poet André Frénaud (1903-1997) and some of the main twentieth-century Italian poets, critics, essayists and publishers in the years from 1946 to the mid-eighties. Following an introductory outline of Frénaud’s life and poetics, the essay provides a sketch of his fortune in Italy. Thereupon follows a description of the letters themselves, with an analysis of a number of them written by poets of the Milan area (Fortini, Vittorini, Montale, Sereni, Solmi, Erba, Risi): what emerges are friendly relationships, book exchanges and reviews, as well as shared publication projects, particularly intense during the fifties
