The incrementally zoned Miocene Ayagaures ignimbrite (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands)
No full textThe 20–25 m thick trachyphonolitic Ayagaures ignimbrite cooling unit [(AY); 11.8 Ma] exposed over 250 km2 (onshore volume ca. 4.5 km3 DRE) is the uppermost and most voluminous cooling unit of the Middle Fataga Formation (MFF), part of the Fataga Group (ca. 13.3–ca. 9 Ma) on Gran Canaria (GC), Canary Islands (28°00′ N, 15°35′ W). Up to 19 flow units (named b–t) subdividing the AY have been identified throughout most of the area from proximally to the caldera wall to distally as far as 14 km away. Individual flow units were distinguished from each other and logged using mainly chemical criteria. Single and/or packages of flow units (A, B and C) are tentatively interpreted to correspond to compositionally distinct magma bodies erupted from the same magma reservoir. These source-controlled flow units are interpreted to reflect successive eruptive pulses during incremental subsidence of Tejeda caldera.
We subdivided AY cooling unit into four welding facies. Tentative correlation with a major syn-ignimbrite turbidite drilled during ODP Leg 157 suggests a total DRE volume of > 50 km3.
The cooling unit as a whole becomes less evolved upwards as shown by major elements, trace elements and REE of bulk rock and phenocrysts. All phenocryst phases, dominantly sanidine–anorthoclase (up to 20 vol.%), with minor biotite, augite, titanite, haüyne and apatite, are unzoned and show an incremental compositional zoning in the stratigraphy. The shallow level parent magma reservoir is interpreted to have undergone strong mixing prior to starting its final compositional zoning in a thermodynamically equilibrated reservoir. Compositional zoning resulted in three main bodies. This compositional and physical layering may have been triggered by rapid growth of alkali feldspar and biotite throughout the erupted part of the magma chamber. Abundant titanite and haüyne phenocrysts in basal flow units and in a locally preserved, highly evolved fallout tephra are interpreted to reflect initial evacuation of a small volume, highly fractionated cupola.
AY represents the most evolved part of a large, partially evacuated magma reservoir. Progressive downward tapping of the reservoir is interpreted to have been controlled by incremental caldera collapse. Absence of less evolved magmas suggests that the magma chamber was only partially evacuated. Incremental compositional zoning of the cooling unit, but unzoned phenocrysts and evacuation reversals show that mixing did not occur following initiation of alkali feldspar growth

Translating Racial Slurs: A Comparative Analysis of Gran Torino Assessing Transfer of Offensive Language between English and Italian.

It chooses the American film 'Gran Torino' (2008) as its source text and discusses the ideological and cultural implications of rendering racial slurs from English into Italian. The dissertation therefore sets the analysis against a backdrop of contemporary North American and European culture understood in linguistic and behavioural patterns and questions the role of audiovisual translational norms in the source culture and tasks of translators in general when dealing with such highly sensitive, culture-bound issues pertaining to the meaning transfer of lingua-cultural taboos. The comparative analysis of the audiovisual texts takes a Critical Discourse perspective, with a strong ideological focus on the possible translation effects

Comportamiento mecánico de restos de pirámides y templos americanos y los edificios históricos construidos sobre ellos
No full textUna característica bastante habitual de monumentos y edificios históricos suele ser el estar construidos sobre otros edificios que bien fueron demolidos para levantar los actuales o bien fueron olvidados. Las nuevas construcciones suelen estar edificadas en parte sobre rellenos artificiales relativamente blandos y sobre zonas rígidas, restos de los muros anteriores. Esta disposición llega a provocar una serie de patologías características. Un caso singular de este tipo de levantamientos es la construcción de iglesias y palacios en Hispanoamérica sobre los restos de las antiguas pirámides. Además de los casos en México D.F., existen bastantes poblaciones en Guatemala y en el resto de México con pirámides parcialmente destruidas que están siendo o fueron utilizadas como base para cimentaciones de “nuevos” edificios históricos. Existen también otros casos en los que, al no disponer de cubrición en su parte superior, permiten el paso del agua
de lluvia. En este artículo se muestra como el comportamiento de estas pirámides y construcciones antiguas incluidas en el terreno es más parecido al de estructuras de contención (muros) que al de plataformas horizontales debido a que el agua de lluvia aumenta los empujes sobre las capas exteriores y estos edificios, como sucede con pirámides de Guatemala y México, sufren una degradación importante. Discourse connectors in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
No full textEl trabajo analiza el uso de los marcadores discursivos en la comunidad urbana de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Se estudian las muestras de actuación de doce informantes del nivel educativo superior, organizados en dos submuestras, de seis hablantes cada una, con una distribución paralela en razón de las variables sexo y edad, y grabadas en diferentes años (alrededor de 1990, la primera, y de 2008, la segunda). El enfoque metodológico es común al de los otros equipos que se incluyen en este volumen y que, sin excepción, forman parte del Estudio coordinado de la norma lingüística culta hispánica “Juan M. Lope Blanch”.This study analyzes the use of discourse connectors in the urban community of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. We work with the linguistic performance samples of twelve high educational level speakers, organized in two subsamples, of six speakers each, with a parallel distribution with respect to the variables sex and age. The first sample was recorded around 1990 and the second one, around 2008. The methodological approach is common to that of other research teams that contribute to this volume and that, without exception, are part of the Coordinated Research Project on the Educated Hispanic Norm “Juan M.
