The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Brake creep groan is a low-frequency noise phenomenon in passenger cars, which can be divided into the sub-areas of noise excitation, noise transmission and noise emission to the environment. The noise transmission in the vehicle chassis is influenced by vibration-related properties, such as the transfer function of the coupled bodies or by the damping in joints, bushings and solids. In the generation of noise, friction zone processes and the pairing of brake materials, the distribution of contact pressure between the brake pad and brake disc and the rigidity of the brake system and the chassis play an important role. The noise emission is influenced, for example, by the vehicle body. Influences on the intensity of the creep groan noise can be found in all of the areas listed. In the present work, the focus is on the identification and evaluation of influencing variables, which are essentially assigned to the sub-area of noise generation. On the basis of investigations that are carried out in the context of the present work, it can be evaluated how strongly the different influencing variables along the creep groan chain affect the low-frequency noise. The investigations show that the effectiveness of noise countermeasures in the area of creep groan excitation is particularly high. Compared to measures that affect the creep groan vibration transmission chain or the creep groan radiation, the potential here is significantly higher. A literature research and also the studies presented above show the need to focus on the creep groan noise excitation and thus on the friction mechanisms. To describe this, the friction zone of disc brakes is considered in-situ under creep groan-relevant operating conditions, i.e. at very low speeds and brake pressures. The in-situ observation is a method in which processes are observed directly on site and directly during an ongoing process. In relation to friction processes in the contact area between a brake disc and a friction lining, this means that the friction zone processes are observed directly. In this thesis special methods are developed and applied to investigate the friction zone processes

During the past decades, on-road vehicles have undergone profound restrictions in safety, comfort and environmental friendliness requirements. Nowadays the strong trend towards the transformation of traditional on-road vehicles to complex systems interconnected with the environment and users and the constantly increasing number of electric and electronics components has forced the industry to devise new control functions and development processes thereof. Advanced estimation functions are necessary to optimise the control demand distribution in brake-by-wire systems in presence of blended operation with electric motors. Moreover, the trends in stricter tailpipe emissions regulations and the proven growth in vehicle registrations motivate the need for new tools which inform the original equipment manufacturers on the environmental friendliness of their vehicle fleet. Under this framework, the present work introduces control and estimation solutions for low-emission multi-actuated ground vehicles to improve braking performance with simultaneous monitoring of brake-related wear and particle emissions. The achievement of this goal brings up interdisciplinary methods ranging among advancements in numerical modelling and simulation tools, application of innovative experimental and sensors fusion techniques and development and verification of novel state estimation and control algorithms. The development of control and estimation functions is supported by model-, software- and hardware-in-the-loop techniques enhanced by means of a novel disc brake model developed at Technische Universität Ilmenau. Experiments performed on the proving ground shows that braking performance can be improved in brake-by-wire systems through compensation of undesired variations in the brake linings’ coefficient of friction. The compensation function provides the driver with brake servo assistance when the required deceleration cannot be achieved. In the case of hybrid and full electric vehicles, the brake linings’ friction compensation improves the control of brake blending with electric motors by ensuring better tracking of the driver reference deceleration. Moreover, the availability of a brake linings’ coefficient of friction estimate enables additional brake monitoring functions. Clever design of experiments and advanced data mining techniques allow identifying the relevant influencing factors on brake-related wear and particle formation process. The experimental evidence drives the mplementation and identification of advanced estimation techniques never dealt with in the past. The proposed control and estimation functions exhibit superior performance when compared to state-of-the-art approaches under real driving conditions

Traffic-related emissions are currently subject to strong public criticism, as they contribute to climate change and are classified as hazardous to health. Emissions from combustion engines are currently regulated by limit values. Due to the application of efficient powertrain units and exhaust aftertreatment systems, the amount of exhaust-related emissions has decreased continuously in recent years. There is currently no legal limit for non-exhaust emissions, such as particulate brake abrasion, which has led to a continuous increase in the share of vehicle global emissions. Since some of the emitted particles can be assigned to the size classes of particulate matter (= 10 µm), this source is of particular relevance to human health and is therefore the focus of scientific studies. Efficient sampling systems are required for a targeted evaluation of the health risk potential. Their application enables a holistic analysis of emission characteristics as well as the chemical and physical properties of the emitted particles under laboratory conditions and in real driving tests. The present work is a contribution to the description of brake particle emissions formation within a constant volume sampling system. In detail, this includes particle injection and particle distribution. A further objective is the evaluation of the applicability of the measurement systems developed primarily for the measurement of particulate exhaust emissions from combustion engines. The first part is the development of a methodology for the analysis of particle injection and deposition behaviour. Based on this, methodical approaches for experimental validation are presented. Investigations on particle distribution and particle deposition allow a holistic evaluation of the processes taking place. In the third part, physical measuring principles for the determination of particle number, particle mass and particle size distribution are examined with regard to applicability. The development of measurement concepts enables the execution of investigations for the evaluation of influencing variables and emission reduction potentials. The final part is the investigation of particle emission behaviour in varying test environments, from inertia dynamometer to real driving tests, which allows a holistic evaluation of interactions and correlations

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

The tribological behaviour of dry-running friction couples is till today not entirely describable. The need of the knowledge of that what happens inside the friction zone during a brake application is enormous. Hence it is an essential objective of the present work to overcome existing limits of in-situ investigations of the friction processes on a multi scale level (nano, micro, macro) to characterize the mechanisms of the friction layer. Therefore enhanced in-situ visualisation investigations were undertaken by the use of especially developed brake discs and original brake linings of passenger cars. The latter include the consideration of different compositions such as ECE, NAO and copper-free ECE formulations. As a result the comparability of the knowledge obtained from the in-situ test concept to conventional friction couples (cast iron disc – organic brake lining) can be stated what underlines the capability and significance of the novel method. Direct analogies regarding the number, size and shape of patches can be observed by the appeared patch behaviour. Using the visualisation and complementary analysis methods it is for the first time feasible to characterize the dynamic of the patch life cycles as a function of the surface area over the braking time. Moreover the force transmitting friction zone surfaces between brake applications were determined and allow conclusions regarding the onset of residual torques. Beside patch analyses the wear particle velocities, traces and dwell times inside the friction zone could be determined for the first time. It was shown that the particles not only move much slower compared to the rotor speed but also that the lining composition has a crucial influence on the development of particle traces and the mutual interaction of the particle motion behaviour. The characterization approach which also includes additional local resolved brake pad topography, compressibility and porosity analyses (by the use of three dimensional computer tomography) as well as chemical analyses (using an EDX analyser) reveals moreover important relationships between the established patch dynamic and the pad physics and chemistry regarding the tribological (dry and wet friction processes) and thermal (thermoelastic instabilities) behaviour. The latter allows for the first time to describe hot spots inside the friction zone by the dynamic determination of their number and surface areas. By means of the presented investigation method it is now feasible to characterize the dynamics and mechanisms from the single patch over certain patch zones finally to the entire friction zone (inclusive friction ring shifts)
