    Sweeping has no effect on renormalized turbulent viscosity

    We perform renormalization group analysis (RG) of the Navier-Stokes equation in the presence of constant mean velocity field U0\mathbf U_0, and show that the renormalized viscosity is unaffected by U0\mathbf U_0, thus negating the ``sweeping effect", proposed by Kraichnan [Phys. Fluids {\bf 7}, 1723 (1964)] using random Galilean invariance. Using direct numerical simulation, we show that the correlation functions u(k,t)u(k,t+τ)\langle {\mathbf u} ({\mathbf k}, t){\mathbf u}({\mathbf k}, t+\tau) \rangle for U0=0\mathbf U_0 =0 and U00\mathbf U_0 \ne 0 differ from each other, but the renormalized viscosity for the two cases are the same. Our numerical results are consistent with the RG calculations

    BONDING AND DYNAMICS OF CN-Rg AND C2_2-Rg COMPLEXES

    Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322The van der Waals complexes of CN and C2_2 with rare gas atoms (Rg) are of interest from the perspectives of their bonding characteristics and predissociation dynamics. Matrix isolation data indicate that that the bonding ranges from a weak van der Waals interaction for the Ne complexes to incipient chemical bonding for Xe. The low-lying vibronic states of CN and C2_2 are interleaved, which facilitates electronic energy transfer. Consequently, electronic predissociation of CN-Rg and C2_2-Rg complexes provides a useful means to examine the detailed dynamics of electronic energy transfer. Predissociation processes for CN-Rg complexes have been characterized using double resonance techniques. The final state distributions exhibit symmetry preferences that yield insights concerning the topologies of the relevant potential energy surfaces. In addition, bond energies can be deduced from the predissociation dynamics. Data for the binary complexes CN-Rg (Rg=Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) and C2_2-Rg will be presented, along with theoretical analyses based on abab initioinitio potential energy surfaces

    Retrieval of global hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) profiles using ENVISAT-MIPAS

    We have used spectra from the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) to perform the first global retrievals of stratospheric H2O2. We demonstrate the feasibility of profile retrievals in the range 6-35 km and obtain zonal mean maps that average profiles computed from consecutive MIPAS orbits for the periods: December 2002, March, June and September 2003. The retrieved H2O2 values show an equatorial mid-stratospheric peak, enhanced values in the Antarctic springtime lower stratosphere, and diurnal/seasonal variability. Our retrieved H2O2 profiles are in qualitative agreement with expected photochemistry and with a previous balloon flight. Copyright 2005 by the American Geophysical Union

    René Géronimo Favaloro : pioneer of Cardiac Surgery

    Dr. René G. Favaloro moved to the Cleveland Clinic in 1962 and proceeded to reshape the face of cardiac surgery as we knew it. Together with his colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic, Drs. Effler, Sones, Proudfit, Groves, Sheldon and countless others, he contributed to the double internal mammary arterymyocardial implantation by the Vineberg method, and by May 1967, he reconstructed the right coronary artery by the saphenous vein graft interposition. These landmark procedures paved the way for the aorto-coronary saphenous vein bypass graft in October 1967. Many similar breakthroughs ensued, with the application of the bypass technique to the left coronary artery, the combination of coronary artery bypass graft with left ventricular reconstruction and valve repair/replacement and finally, by December, a double bypass to the right coronary artery and anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery. In June, 1971, Dr. Favaloro decided to leave the Cleveland Clinic and return to Argentina where he created a medical centre, a teaching unit, a research department and finally an Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery. This was his greatest personal ambition. Over and above his brilliant mind and craft, Dr. Favaloro was a man of integrity, courage, honesty and humility, whose name will never cease to reverberate throughout the history of medicine.peer-reviewe

    A neural network approach for monitoring of volcanic SO2 and plume height using hyperspectral measurements

    In this study two neural networks were implemented in order to emulate a retrieval model and to estimate the sulphur dioxide (SO2) columnar content and cloud height from volcanic eruption. ANNs were trained using all Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) channels in Thermal Infrared (TIR) as inputs, and the corresponding values of SO2 content and height of volcanic cloud obtained using the Oxford SO2 retrievals as target outputs. The retrieval is demonstrated for the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano (Iceland) occurred in 2010 and to three IASI images of the Grímsvötn volcanic eruption that occurred in May 2011, in order to evaluate the networks for an unknown eruption. The results of validation, both for Eyjafjallajökull independent data-sets, provided root mean square error (RMSE) values between neural network outputs and targets lower than 20 DU for SO2 total column and 200 mb for cloud height, therefore demonstrating the feasibility to estimate SO2 values using a neural network approach, and its importance in near real time monitoring activities, owing to its fast application. Concerning the validation carried out with neural networks on images from the Grímsvötn eruption, the RMSE of the outputs remained lower than the Standard Deviation (STD) of targets, and the neural network underestimated retrieval only where target outputs showed different statistics than those used during the training phase

    A non-classical synthetic strategy for organic mesocrystals

    Mesocrystals are ordered nanoparticle superstructures, often with internal porosity, which receive much recent research interest in catalysis, energy storage, sensors, and biomedicine area. Understanding the mechanism of synthetic routes is essential for precise control of size and structure that affect the function of mesocrystals. The classical synthetic strategy of mesocrystal was formed via self-assembly of nanoparticles with a faceted inorganic core but a denser (or thicker) shell of organic molecules. However, the potential materials and synthetic handles still need to be explored to meet new applications. In this work, we develop a non-classical synthetic strategy for organic molecules, such as tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) ethylene (TPE-4OH), tetrakis (4-bromophenyl) ethylene (TPE-4Br), and benzopinacole, to produce mesocrystals with composed of microrod arrays via co-solvent-induced crystal transformation. The aligned nanorods are grown epitaxially onto organic microplates, directed by small lattice mismatch between plates and rods. Grainger, Mathot, and Vitu (2014) and Palinski (2016) found, for words, responding was more efficient when flanking bigrams contained target-string letters than when they did not. They also found that responding was more efficient when flanking bigrams contained letters ordered as in the target than switched but whether flanking bigrams were ordered as in the target did not affect performance. Palinski (2016) replicated the results of Grainger et al. (2014) and conducted a second experiment that included four additional conditions in which the flanking bigrams consist of letters separated by one letter in the target (ex. FO FROG RG; RG FROG FO; OF FROG GR; GR FROG OF). Although, for nonadjacent letter bigrams, the pattern of performance over conditions was like that in Grainger et al. (2014) and Palinski (2016) Experiment 1, for adjacent bigrams, the pattern was different. To investigate the stability of these results, we repeated Palinski\u27s second experiment. We replicated her results.
