Investigating (in)equalities in organisations: a three-paper thesis on gender and expatriation in the Saudi Arabian context

    No full text
This thesis examines the employment experiences of underrepresented groups, particularly women and non-Western expatriates, within Saudi Arabian organisations. The research contributes to the growing HRM/IHRM literature on employment (in)equalities by examining how socio-cultural and institutional dynamics shape access to opportunities in Saudi Arabia’s distinctive organisational and socio-economic context. The examination of such dynamics with broader cultural and institutional structures is significant because organisations play a pivotal role in either perpetuating or mitigating societal (in)equalities, both locally and globally. This thesis is particularly significant as Saudi Arabia undergoes profound societal and economic reforms under Vision 2030, which prioritises greater workforce diversity and inclusion. Using a qualitative approach and thematic analysis of 85 in-depth interviews conducted in Riyadh, the research investigates how socio-institutional characteristics in the evolving Saudi context shape employment (in)equality. Study 1 applies an intersectional framework to analyse the roles of gender, tribal affiliation, and marital status in shaping women’s employment. The findings reveal that while tribal affiliations and marital status often act as barriers, they also confer certain privileges; for example, tribal networks (wasta) can facilitate job opportunities, and divorce may sometimes offer women increased autonomy. Study 2 explores self-Orientalism among both non-Western expatriates and Saudi nationals, revealing how internalised cultural hierarchies perpetuate discriminatory hiring, pay, and role assignment practices, sometimes reinforced by the Kafala system. This study contributes to IHRM literature by highlighting how socio-cultural dynamics influence employment (in)equalities within Saudi private-sector organisations. Study 3 examines the impact of Islamic religiosity on Saudi women’s workplace experiences, particularly through the lens of various forms of hijab. The findings demonstrate a disconnect between societal support for Islamic modesty and organisational biases, with certain forms of hijab, such as the niqab, hindering career advancement despite social acceptance. Together, these studies contribute to HRM and IHRM literature by examining how intersectionality, Orientalism, and religiosity interact to shape employment (in)equalities. In highlighting the dynamics of employment (in)equalities, the thesis offers valuable insights for understanding the complex interactions between cultural practices, institutional frameworks, and workplace diversity in Saudi Arabia. The thesis provides practical recommendations for organisational leaders and policymakers to promote inclusivity and diversity in the workforce, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030

    No full text
Interfaces to library systems have largely failed to represent the in-herently collaborative nature of information work. This paper describes how collaborative functionality is being implemented as part of the DEBORA project to provide access to digitised Renaissance documents. Work practices of users of Renaissance documents are described and the collaborative features of the client software are outlined. Functionalities discussed include annotation, the creation of virtual books and the inclusion of user-supplied metadata

The maze:Reflections on navigating intersectional identities in the workplace

Myriam's story is the story of a woman who has faced several intersectional barriers throughout her life and career journey, leading her into a “maze” of dead-ends that has jointly prevented her motion. The telling of this story breaks the conventional masculine patterns of academic writing of recent years and represents a turning point in organizational thought. This piece contributes to the growing body of literature in organizational studies on “writing differently,” which advocates for alternative modes of writing and doing research, particularly feminist writing that incorporates storytelling, composite character, and arts-based research. The approach taken is informed by the use of metaphor, which provides an additional means to convey nuanced understandings and insights that may not be easily expressed through conventional academic writing. The account illuminates the way social identities operate in tandem with power dynamics, social and national context, patriarchy, and relationality to shape individuals' experiences of oppression and privilege. The discourse emphasizes how these factors interrelate and reinforce one another, giving rise to multiple forms of inequality that have significant impacts on women's professional experiences and careers. It uses inventiveness and creativity to provide an immediate emotional and embodied connection between the reader and the lived experiences of Myriam. By offering an in-depth written and visual representation that moves beyond “linguistic imperialism,” this paper intends to create a critically reflexive and inclusive space that makes the invisible embedded and insidious experience of oppression visible to a wider and more diverse audience

On the avant-garde : Bruno Schulz and Debora Vogel

    No full text
In his recent book devoted to the study of Schulz, Michał Paweł Markowski rebukes the scholars of Schulz that they have ignored the indebtedness of the write r in Hegel's philosophy, and at the same time he claims that it is hard to find in Schulz any evidence that he had actually read the philosopher. The author of the article argues the contrary: Hegelian themes are treated by Schulz with an ironic distance, and it is certain the w rite r read Hegel as his closest friend, Debora Vogel, devoted her PhD dissertation to the author of The Phenomenology of Spirit. The influence of Hegel can be rather seen in Vogel's writings, as she was fascinated by the avant-garde idea of progress pursued by the anonymous masses. Seemingly Schulz the bumpkin is behind but in the long run he went ahead of his friend, because unlike her he stressed the subjective aspect of the avant-garde revolution. Plagiarism is a widespread phenomenon in the global university environment and represents a threat to academic integrity and ethical standards. The objective of this thesis is to achieve a holistic perspective of professors' perception about ethics in education and more specifically university students' plagiarism, as well as to understand the role that they play in its prevention, detection and management. To this end, a qualitative methodology is used, collecting data through semi-structured interviews. The sample consists of 81 professors from six universities of economics and business faculties in six different countries. Thus, it allows analyzing the influence of the cultural context on this issue. The results show how ethics (more generally) and plagiarism (more specifically) are perceived differently in different cultural contexts, including between countries of the European educational area, and show how different perceptions influence the form and degree of dedication that teachers exercise to prevent, detect and manage it

Homogenization of conservation laws with oscillatory source and non-oscillatory data

We consider a scalar conservation law with oscillatory, periodic source term and with oscillatory initial data. For possibly resonant initial data, we prove a corrector-type result for this problem, extending a previous one by the author [Asymptotic Anal. 46 (2006), 53-79]. Here we can relax the assumption of well-prepared data

Violence, Chaos and Theophany in Habakkuk 3

    No full text
Divine violence often causes scandal, since the current image of divinity is one-dimensional, focused on features such as mercy, justice, forgiveness, etc. In reality, the Bible – First and New Testaments – is not afraid to present many faces of God, even those that are scandalous to us. The aim of this paper is to show the role of divine vio- lence in restoring order in the cosmos through the analysis of one of the most complex texts of the First Testament: Abakkuk 3. The restoration of the cosmic order is also the restoration of good and earthly justice. It is evident, however, that the world of the con- temporary reader is different from that of the author and his readers: textual analysis shows the distance that separates them and, at the same time, opens up a space of issues that solicits numerous questions about our way of place ourselves in front of religion and the divine, on our presuppositions and our expectations
