Metal contamination from coal ashes (CAs) is widely recognized as a significant environmental concern. To learn more about metal detoxification and accumulation potential of earthworm species, metal-rich tea factory coal ashes (TFCA) were fed to Eisenia fetida and Lampito mauritii by employing a fluorescent tag detection method. Fascinatingly, on feeding fluorescence probed Zn and Cd along with cow dung to Eisenia fetida, the detection of the gut-proteins with a molecular mass higher than 100 kDa was a distinct evidence of metal binding. Significant increases were observed in the content of humified organic C [humic acid (HAC) and fulvic acid C (FAC)] and degree of humification during vermicomposting. Concurrently, considerably large amount of toxic metals (Cr, Cd, Pb, and Zn) was transformed from exchangeable to recalcitrant (organic matter and mineral bound) fractions. Moreover, total metal concentrations were reduced with high removal efficiency upon vermicomposting. The last author (KH Kim) acknowledges the support provided by the Cooperative Research Program for Agriculture Science & Technology Development (Project title: Study on model development to control odor from pig pen, Project No. PJ01052101), Rural Development Administration, Republic of Korea. Emission of fine particulates and SO2 during coke making—a pilot plant study

The coal-based industries in India are considered to be one of the chief industrial emitters of the particulate matter. The composition and size distribution of particles emitted by coal combustion sources depend upon various mechanisms leading to their formation. These emissions are having primary and secondary impact on the air, water and soil quality, which is leading to an adverse effect on the environment and the living beings. The North-Eastern Region (NER) of India is endowed with a good reserve of high sulphur coals, unevenly distributed in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. These coals have characteristics of high organic sulphur (75–90%), less oxygen, low ash, high volatile matter, mostly caking in nature with partly swelling propensities, low ash fusion temperature range, highly friable and perhydrous in nature generally with low slagging potentials. In present scenario, NER coals, particularly high sulphur caking coals of Assam and Meghalaya, are most widely used in coke-oven industries. In the present investigation, particulate matter (SPM, PM2.5 and PM10) and SO2 were collected from a non-recovery type of experimental coke-oven having a capacity of 100 kg/batch with Nagaland coals taken as feed stock. The properties of particulate matter are then studied including its mass, particle size distribution and elemental composition. Study showed that levels of SO2, PM2.5, PM10 and suspended particulate matter were higher than that of the Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Standards. The study of these emissions using high sulphur coals will contribute to the national inventory for controlling pollutio

    No full text
After reviewing the effectiveness of the bioregion concept as an instrument for interpreting the organisation of human settlements in a territory as the starting point for promoting its self-sustainable development in the context of a new pact between city and countryside, the article turns to the factors that determine the geographical boundaries of a bioregion. The author highlights the need for an interdisciplinary approach that views the territory’s natural and man-made characteristics as being ‘co-evolutionary’, incorporating its environmental factors, economic activities and settlement network in the context of an integrated analysis that also takes account of its historical process of territorialization. The author adopts this methodological approach to describe the main stages of territorialization that have characterised the Pontina Bioregion, located about 70 km south of Rome, between the consolidation of the early settlements of ancient Latium Vetus and the process of deterritorialization generated by the so-called ‘integral reclamation’ of the 1920 and 1930s. A brief description of a territory that has been adversely im-pacted by unsustainable development models brings to light both the inadequacy of the instruments available for territorial and settlement design and especially the lack of clear scenarios for the future. The development of such scenarios emerges as a strategic objective to be pursued. The article ends with a discussion of possible design proposals and tools

    No full text
The contribution aims to examine the European Commission’s communication of the 29th of September 2022, concerning the guidelines on the application of Union competition law to collective agreements concerning the working conditions of solo self-employed persons. The author reflects on the innovations contained within this soft law act, compared to the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union on the matter, of which she examines the main points, deducible from the Albany and FNV Kunsten cases. In particular, she focuses on the notion of solo self-employed persons, both those comparable to employees and those not comparable to the latter, on the rationale justifying the antitrust immunity of collective agreements signed by their representative organizations and on the effects that the guidelines could have on Italian law

Roberto Gerhard’s Sound Compositions: A Historical-Philological Perspective. Archive, Process, Intent and reenactment

    No full text
This research advances the current state of knowledge in the field of early tape music both empirically and methodologically. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact that the electronic medium exerted in the musical thinking of Roberto Gerhard, one of the most outspoken, prolific and influential composers in the Spanish diaspora whose musical legacy, for the most part unknown, is a major landmark in the early history of electroacoustic music. Gerhard’s personal tape collection, one of the largest historical archives of its kind reported in the literature, is exceptional for both its antiquity (50+-year-old tapes) and its abundance of production materials. Through the digitisation and analysis of the composer’s tape collection this research argues that the empirical study of audio documents sets out a basis for a broader understanding of textual processes. More specifically, the research demonstrates that the reconstruction of works based on magnetic tape sketches is a powerful method to advance the understanding of early tape music. This research also examines Gerhard’s sound compositions in relation to the post-war context in which they were composed. Finally, this research presents performance documentation that proposes an approach to the electroacoustic music repertoire in which creativity is not at odds with rigor and critical discernment demonstrating that archival study can be closely aligned to the concept of re-enactment
