    No full text
The first volume in a new series publishing Francophone writers of the Pacific in English, The Kanak Apple Season presents the short fiction of Dewe Gorode, the leading Kanak author of New Caledonia. This remarkable collection reflects the ethnic complexities of the colonial past of New Caledonia. The author's approach to language reveals an original voice that compels attention. Drawing on the heritage of blood-lines, family, cultural tradition and colonialism, Gorode takes her reader on a journey into the Kanak world providing fascinating insight into the culture of one of Australia's nearest- yet least known- neighbours

Adult education as an experience-oriented process

    No full text
(DIPF/Orig.)The author demonstrates that the present debate on practical strategies and theoretical concepts of adult education has shifted its focus: it is now on orienting educational processes primarily to the addressees’ experiences and thus relativizing scientific interpretations of Professional and private problems. The author points out the danger of letting experience-oriented adult education turn into an education without subjects or goals. He reconstructs the basic principles of Socratic discourse and argues that the successful education of adults relies on the tension between experience and concept (as scientific insight). Bernd Dewe finds it necessary to redefine the concept of education in Order to formulate theories in adult pedagogy

Recit fondateur et culture politique en Nouvelle-Caledonie. 'Tea Kanake', de Melanesia 2000 au Festival des Arts du Pacifique (1975-2000)

    No full text
In 1975, Jean-Marie Tjibaou, whose name was to become synonymous with the pro-independence movement in New Caledonia, organised the Melanesia 2000 Festival in Noumea. The idea behind this Festival was to bring together Kanak from all over the Territory in an attempt to revive their culture and pave the way for a new 'postcolonial' identity. Tjibaou produced a play-pageant of 'Jea Scenique', which was an adaptation of the Kanak foundation myth, Tea Kanake. A quarter of a century later, Dewe Gorode, a Kanak writer and activist who had been opposed on political grounds to Melanesia 2000, also adapted this foundation narrative in her play, Kenake 2000, written for the 8th Pacific Arts Festival, which took place in Noumea in 2000. After comparing the tenets, versions and implications of this foundation myth produced by Tjibaou and Gorode, we present an interview with Gorgode, who is today Vice-President of the New Caledonian government, in charge of culture

A new era in library and information collaboration in New Zealand

The New Zealand government has signalled a new era for collaboration by establishing a Library and Information Advisory Commission (LIAC) under the National Library of New Zealand Act 2003. The statutory purpose of the Commission is to “provide advice to the Minister on library and information issues, including mātauranga Māori”. LIAC is required to take account of recent national and international developments in relation to library and information services. The promotion of collaboration in relation to protecting, preserving and promoting access to information is specifically listed as a key responsibility of LIAC. LIAC is an independent advisor to government via the Minister for the National Library but is not restricted to National Library issues. The work of the Commission in highlighting the importance of library and information services to the wider cultural and economic life of the country is a unique opportunity to work across sectors and suggest a strategic framework for the development of the information society and the knowledge economy in New Zealand. In this respect it will wish to work with LIANZA (Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa), which has already done considerable work in developing a national approach to information strategy. This is based on a three-pronged approach to knowledge: Knowledge Access – the infrastructure to access knowledge Knowledge Content – the content to be made available and accessible through an information infrastructure Knowledge Equity – the skills needed to turn information into knowledge. As Chair of the Commission, the author of this paper contributes to LIAC a perspective of the importance of e-learning and e-research. Other members bring a wealth of experience from national, public and research library backgrounds and from education, ICT and the media. The work of the Commission in harnessing a wide range of expertise to provide an innovative model of collaboration is outlined

The overall research question was: How do the work characteristics of homecare workers and the work environment in homecare contribute to job satisfaction, stress, physical health, and retention? The research is designed as a mixed-method approach with both qualitative and quantitative data. Results showed that restructuring and organizational change in the homecare sector has contributed to both mental and physical health problems (including job stress and musculoskeletal disorders), job dissatisfaction, and retention problems. Factors that contribute to higher levels of satisfaction and the propensity to stay with the organization include organizational and peer support, working one-on-one with clients, doing emotional labour (that is, the work involved in dealing with other people’s feelings), and satisfaction with schedules, pay, and benefits. This study also examined the association between job flexibility and job insecurity and self-reported musculoskeletal disorders and found no relationship between these variables and musculoskeletal disorders.home care workers, job satisfaction, retention
