Ragionamenti storico-medici intorno all'Eros
Virtual reality in anxiety disorders: The past and the future
One of the most effective treatments of anxiety is exposure therapy: a person is exposed to specific feared situations or objects that trigger anxiety. This exposure process may be done through actual exposure, with visualization, by imagination or using virtual reality (VR), that provides users with computer simulated environments with and within which they can interact. VR is made possible by the capability of computers to synthesize a 3D graphical environment from numerical data. Furthermore, because input devices sense the subject's reactions and motions, the computer can modify the synthetic environment accordingly, creating the illusion of interacting with, and thus being immersed within the environment. Starting from 1995, different experimental studies have been conducted in order to investigate the effect of VR exposure in the treatment of subclinical fears and anxiety disorders. This review will discuss their outcome and provide guidelines for the use of VR exposure for the treatment of anxious patients
Nurses’ violations of a medication administration protocol in Italy : an observational study
committed by nurses. Errors often result from violations of standardized procedures, safety regulations, or protocols
defined within a specific healthcare context for increasing patients’ safety. Usually, it is difficult to quantify and analyze
violations because they often do not produce immediate consequences for patients’ safety. The aim of this research was to
investigate the self-perceived and actual rate and nature of violations of a standardized medication administration protocol.
For this, we conducted a study based both on systematic covert observations and self-reported measures in a sample of
nurses working in different wards of two hospitals in Italy. The main results indicate that, even though the perceived level
of adherence to the standardized medication administration protocol was high, the actual rate of adherence was very low.
In particular, we observed that nurses are rather observant regarding items that have a clear relation to hazard, and less
observant for those that have more to do with their own responsibilities than safety. Moreover, differences in nurses’
adherence to the medication administration protocol found among the different wards and the two hospitals suggest that,
other than individual factors, organizational and environmental conditions also play a crucial role in the occurrence of
violations. Interruptions to work activities were also observed revealing that most of them are not generated by external
factors, as expected, but by violations themselves.
Identifying violations and their causes is of crucial importance to finding strategies to reduce them, and consequently to
reduce errors that imperil patients’ safety
An Economist’s plaidoyer for a secular ethics: the moral foundation and social role of critical rationalism
The dialogue between the worlds of art and science
How to place today medicine in the overall cultural context remains an open debate. The figure of the physician requires scientific knowledge, technical ability, but must be sustained by a sound humanitarian ethos, stressing the aspects related to communication. We should always keep in mind that the physician shall master instruments based on creativity, artistic valence, centered on the individual, rather than methodologically founded procedures, in a comprehensive and holistic frame
