Election uncertainty, economic policy uncertainty and financial market uncertainty: A prediction-market analysis

    No full text
We examine the relationship between election uncertainty, economic policy uncertainty, and financial market uncertainty in a prediction-market analysis, covering seven US presidential election campaigns. We argue theoretically that changes in the incumbent party re-election probability should be a key driver of changes in policy uncertainty. Consistent with this theory, we find that a large portion of changes in financial uncertainty in the final stages of election campaign seasons is explained by changes in the probability of the incumbent party getting re-elected. Our findings suggest that the incumbent-party election probability, derived from prediction markets, is an important measure of economic policy uncertainty in the days leading up to US elections

This is an item from the William Crawford Gorgas papers. This collection includes material created by and written about Gorgas, as well as material created by other Gorgas family members. His diaries and journals illuminate his life and work for the U.S. Army as a surgeon and span the years he worked in Cuba and Panama. The collection includes official reports and other documents Gorgas wrote and collected, as well as articles and other publications written about Gorgas and his work in sanitation and disease prevention, particularly yellow fever. Correspondence, articles, and other items document the numerous awards and tributes Gorgas received during his life and memorials after his death in 1920. In addition to William Crawford Gorgas material, the collection includes other material belonging to Gorgas family members including Marie Gorgas and their daughter, Aileen Gorgas Wrightson. In 1924, his widow Marie Gorgas published William Crawford Gorgas: His Life and Work. This collection includes manuscripts, galley proofs, and published versions of her work

Comparing search-engine intensity and regulatory attention impacts on cryptocurrencies: Uncovering important heterogeneities

    No full text
Using search engine data from Google Trends alongside dates of US regulatory announcements, we comparatively investigate the nature of search-engine intensity and regulatory attention impacts on weekly volatility/returns of selected cryptocurrencies. Consistent with cryptocurrencies having an individual investor base, we find Google Trends volume is more impacting than regulatory announcements. However, while we evidence across cryptocurrencies a homogenous univariate and dynamic positive correlation between returns/volatilities and search engine intensity, we contrastingly find cryptocurrencies respond heterogeneously to regulatory announcements. Results indicate that Ethereum, and to a lesser extent Ripple and Litecoin, are important diversifiers to Bitcoin with respect to regulatory risk, with Bitcoin more vulnerable to regulatory shocks at lower (higher) levels of volatility (returns). Our findings should be of great interest to investors seeking ways to optimally include cryptocurrencies into portfolios, as well as to scholars interested more generally in distinctions with respect to market outcomes of investor sentiment versus regulatory sentiment

International audienceExtending the time period of Goodell and Goutte (2020), we apply wavelet methods to daily data of COVID-19 world deaths and daily Bitcoin prices from December 31, 2019 to August 31, 2020. We confirm Goodell and Goutte (2020) for an extended period by evidencing a positive correlation between levels of COVID-19 and Bitcoin prices, suggesting Bitcoin as a safe haven investment. Investigations such as this are important to both scholars and policy-makers, as well as investment professionals interested in the financial implications of both COVID-19 and cryptocurrencies

Editor Robert Goodell: a California independent

This study investigates the editorship of Robert W. Goodell at the San Luis Obispo (Calif.) Telegram-Tribune from 1943-1963. It compares biographical findings on Goodell's editorial policy and role in the community with his editorials. It was hypothesized that as the community grew, editorials on controversial subjects would be more frequent; also that Goodell balanced community support and controversy, and adhered to his stated liberal policies. Goodell's personal papers and other historical materials were examined. Forty interviews were conducted with co-workers, community leaders and representatives of the John P. Scripps Newspaper Group, which owned the paper. A content analysis of Goodell's 20 years of editorials was performed, sampling every fifth year, starting with 1944. In all, 1,710 editorials were read. They were coded for treatment of 10 specific growth-related topics, political party references and controversial subjects. It was found that Goodell's editorials were shaped by his close proximity to the local power structure, his perception of his audience, his editorial policy, his personality, and the size and make-up of the community. He sought to avoid controversy and alienating his small-town audience. He supported local growth and liberal causes. The number of controversial topics diminished somewhat, but Goodell took a number of strong stands. For example, he attacked Senator Joseph McCarthy and "Red baiting" tactics. He was a political independent, most often supporting Democrats and opposing Republicans.California State University, Northridge. Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
