Salinity changes in the World Ocean since 1950 in relation to changing surface freshwater fluxes
No full textGlobal hydrographic and air–sea freshwater flux datasets are used to investigate ocean salinity changes over 1950–2010 in relation to surface freshwater flux. On multi-decadal timescales, surface salinity increases (decreases) in evaporation (precipitation) dominated regions, the Atlantic–Pacific salinity contrast increases, and the upper thermocline salinity maximum increases while the salinity minimum of intermediate waters decreases. Potential trends in E–P are examined for 1950–2010 (using two reanalyses) and 1979–2010 (using four reanalyses and two blended products). Large differences in the 1950–2010 E–P trend patterns are evident in several regions, particularly the North Atlantic. For 1979–2010 some coherency in the spatial change patterns is evident but there is still a large spread in trend magnitude and sign between the six E–P products. However, a robust pattern of increased E–P in the southern hemisphere subtropical gyres is seen in all products. There is also some evidence in the tropical Pacific for a link between the spatial change patterns of salinity and E–P associated with ENSO. The water cycle amplification rate over specific regions is subsequently inferred from the observed 3-D salinity change field using a salt conservation equation in variable isopycnal volumes, implicitly accounting for the migration of isopycnal surfaces. Inferred global changes of E–P over 1950–2010 amount to an increase of 1 ± 0.6 % in net evaporation across the subtropics and an increase of 4.2 ± 2 % in net precipitation across subpolar latitudes. Amplification rates are approximately doubled over 1979–2010, consistent with accelerated broad-scale warming but also coincident with much improved salinity sampling over the latter period

No full textThis document focuses on the formal structures and tonal language of four trios that include horn by American composer Simon A. Sargon: "Huntsman, What Quarry?" Two Poems of Edna St. Vincent Millay for Soprano, Horn, and Piano (1990); Trio for Horn, Violin, and Piano: "The Legacy" (1993); A Clear Midnight: Six Songs Set to Poems of Walt Whitman for Baritone, Horn, and Piano (1996); and Sonic Portals: Trio for Oboe, Horn, and Piano (2003). Comparisons with precedent works of like instrumentation demonstrate that Sargon's trios, though musically unique, merit a place alongside masterworks like Carl Reinecke's Trio, op. 188, for oboe, horn, and piano; Franz Schubert's Auf dem Strom for soprano, horn, and piano; and especially Johannes Brahms's Trio, op. 40, for violin, horn, and piano. Other precedent, contemporary, and related works are also mentioned. Sargon's ability to write idiomatically for the horn and other instruments is discussed, and consideration is given to some elements required to create a good performance of Sargon's chamber music. Included are a brief biography of Simon Sargon, letters from colleagues with whom he has worked closely, lists of his instrumental music and recordings of some of these pieces, and lists of other works in the genres discussed herein

Charlie May Simon: Uncovering The Lost Voice of An Arkansas Author
No full textThis dissertation analyzes the life and published novels of noted Arkansas author Charlie May Simon, a woman whose writing career spanned four decades, during which time she remained an Arkansas resident. None of her twenty-nine published novels, biographies, or memoirs remain in print. Although a yearly award was established in 1970 by the Arkansas Department of Education— the Charlie May Simon Book Award— educators and librarians have difficulty obtaining copies of her own writing that set the high bar of excellence each award recipient demonstrates. My purpose in research is to uncover the prose beauty of Charlie May Simon’s writing, examine the history of her life and the times in which she produced her work, and wrestle with the factors that caused her voice to go silent, lost to our current generation. Broader implications of research include the ability to view patriarchy, gendered performance, and gender roles through the lens she provides in her writing of the times in which she lived. The research conducted occurred in four special collections archives: Butler Center of Arkansas Studies (John Gould Fletcher/Charlie May Simon photograph collection, BC.PHO.32 and Charlie May Simon Materials, MSS.97.28), University of Arkansas in Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture (Charlie May Simon Papers, UALR.MS.0006), University of Memphis Libraries (Mississippi Valley Collection, Charlie May Simon MSS.41), and Syracuse University in New York (E.P. Dutton & Company, Inc. Records). Analysis of her published works, including illustrations and text, is taken from my personal library collection of all Charlie May Simon published books. Literary analysis is the primary focus of the study; new historicism is the literary criticism lens of my methodological approach to contemplate the culture, historical events, and life occurrences that fueled the creative spirit of Arkansas’s most prolific author of the 20th century. Areas for further research are outlined in the conclusion, signifying implications which additional scholarship and archival research in the four collections could reveal. In each collection, personal and business correspondence chronicle the indomitable spirit of the Arkansas literary diamond, Charlie May Simon
