Band dispersion effects on the Cu 2p(3/2) X-ray photoemission core lines in cuprates
No full textThe effect of band dispersion on the Cu 2p X-ray photoemission core line in cuprates is studied and a discussion is proposed on the interplay between the local aspects of the photoemission event and the long-range properties of the solid. The Cu 2p(3/2) core line emission of CuGeO3 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 calculated using a parametrized configuration interaction impurity cluster model is compared with the experimental data. It is shown that by explicitly including into the model the valence band density of states, the fine structure of the Cu 2p(3/2) main line can be reproduced and the main line width increases with the Cu 3d band dispersion
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Fractional surface doping by topological neutral wall intersections on Ge(111)
No full textWe show that a fluctuating incommensurate domain wall structure such as that hypothesized for clean Ge(111) above 540 K and the observed weakly metallic behavior can be mutually related in an unexpected manner. The wall structure implies a liquid of defects-adatom trimers at the intersection of three concurrent topological walls-that carry fractional charge, one half extra electron each. These electrons are delocalized among defects, giving rise to a narrow band 2D metal, whose Fermi level density of states grows with the density of walls and thus with temperature. This model agrees strikingly with new photoemission measurements carded out on Ge(111) across the 540 K transition and beyond

No full textThe structure of some novel oligomeric thiophene-containing pi-conjugated Pd(II) complexes, recently prepared in our laboratory, Cl-Pd(PBu3)(2)-C=C-C4H2S-C=C-C4H2S-C=C-C4H2S-C=C-Pd(PBu3)(2)Cl or Pd-TRI and Cl[-Pd(PBu3)(2)-C=C-C4H2S-C=C-](3)-Pd(PBu3)(2)Cl Or Pd-DET, were studied by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The interface formation between chromium and the organometallic rr-conjugated polymer films was also investigated. Chromium was evaporated stepwise in situ onto the surface of the polymer films and the XPS core-level spectra of the polymer and of the metal overlayer were studied as a function of Cr coverage. A charge-transfer reaction from the deposited metal atoms to the substrate material was evidenced by the modifications taking place in the polymer spectra upon Cr deposition. A comparison with the surface reactivity towards chromium of [-Pd(PBu3)(2)-C=C-C6H4-C6H4-C=C-](n), Pd-DEBP, a related polymer where benzene groups replace thiophene in the organic conjugated moiety, will be discussed

Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
